AB - Aging is the subject of various studies by the scientific community and monitoring by responsible institutions. The intensity of aging and the proportion of age groups among various communities differ due to different socio-economic conditions and characteristics. This article researches the impact of the war in Croatia 1991–1995 and postwar living conditions on the divergence of population aging in the ethnically heterogeneous Banija region. The first postwar census in 2001 recorded population decline by 44.9% compared to the 1991 census. We analyze the effects of the war on changes in ethnic and age structure, as well as their interrelations. The quantitative and qualitative magnitude of these demographic changes in the inter-census period had a decisive influence on the correlation of age and ethnic structure. The article examines whether the relative share of Serbs or Croats in the total population of a settlement affects the average age of the settlement. The results confirmed that the Serbs are older than the Croats, as well as the Serbs are in the phase of the most advanced demographic age. These changes raise the question of the demographic future and the biological viability of the Serbs, who were the majority in the region before the war.

AB - Contemporary scientific literature and strategic documents suggest the concept of polycentricity as a key factor and the aim of regional development policies. One of the aims of this study is to analyze spatial relations between the nodal regions and to determine (calculate) the level of polycentricity in the region of Vojvodina (Northern Serbia). By quantifying spatial relations in the region (using selected methods), we pointed out the relevance of regional development policies, i.e., the extent to which the proposed measures for reducing regional inequalities are in line with the direction of contemporary spatial relations in the region of Vojvodina. We have used four different methodological tools: rank-size rule, urban primacy index, index of functional centrality, and commuting patterns (levels of functional dependence). The obtained results identified the existence of morphological polycentricity, but also the growing domination of the cities of Novi Sad and Belgrade in regulating and managing spatial and functional relations in the region of Vojvodina. These results are not completely in line with the development directions declared in the strategic documents. Our approach focuses on assessing the influence of the main nodal (sub)centers in managing further spatial and functional relations in the region of Vojvodina.

AB - This paper analyzes water quality from four hydrological stations in the Nisava river basin from 2009-2018 based on the following parameters: pH, conductivity, O-2 saturation, BOD5, suspended solids, total oxidized nitrogen, phosphates, turbidity and coliform bacteria. Authors have applied WQI (water quality index) as the most reliable indicator of the watercourses pollution for setting of surface water flow quality. Statistical analysis of variance (ANOVA) using t-test inferential statistical analysis and post-hoc Tukey test were applied to evaluate statistically significant differences between specific data groups. The results show that bad water quality was registered on all the profiles on an annual basis (WQI = 65-71). The river water pH decreases downstream, while values of BOD5, suspended solids, turbidity, TON, phosphates and coliform bacteria gradually increase. The waters of the Nisava at the station Nis belong to the third class of waters and they are mostly loaded with organic matter originating from waste sewage and industrial waters of both urban and rural areas.

AB - The Sokobanja basin is an area in Eastern Serbia with diverse geological and geomorphological features. Also, it is an area with developed spa tourism. The Sokobanja basin has numerous geoheritage features, which tourist potential has not been discovered yet. In this article, several geosites were analyzed, which present significant geoheritage formations. Geosites were selected by authors of this article based on the degree of their attractiveness for the geotourism development. The main goal of this article is to emphasize the geotourism potential of the Sokobanja basin and to determine the current state and geotourism potential of evaluated geosites by applying the modified geosite assessment model (M-GAM). A total of seven geosites were evaluated throughout the basin. The values of the investigated parameters were entered into the matrix of the M-GAM based on the number of points. Based on the research and the results obtained, it can be concluded that the Sokobanja basin has the potential for the development of geotourism, but it is necessary to improve additional values to become a true geotourism destination.

AB - Climate is one of the most important factors of tourism development. Tourism trends and activities are largely determined by climatic conditions, as well as potential tourist investments. South Serbia is characterized by climate diversity on a relatively small territory. This region is characterized by heterogeneity and richness in geomorphological, hydrological, and cultural tourism resources. However, more intensive tourism development is limited by a weak financial tourism base. The aims of the work are to evaluate climatic conditions in the main tourism centers of South Serbia and to determine the impact of climate change on the development of tourism in the region. Bioclimatic indicators, primarily the tourism climatic index, were used as a statistical and qualitative method for the evaluation of climatological data for the needs of tourism. The results of the research will point to the advantages, but also to the deficiencies of the climate as a tourism resource of South Serbia.

AB - Compared to other regions in the Republic of Serbia, Vojvodina had gone through different socio-historical stages of development. Until 1918, Vojvodina was a region within Austro – Hungarian monarchy, which had a clearly formulated policy of spatial and functional organisation of this region. Due to the planning development of the region, a morphological polycentric settlements network had been created, which is characterized by functionally developed (and independent) rural settlements with a population of several thousand inhabitants, as well as relatively large number of urban centres. At the time of accession of Vojvodina to the Kingdom of Serbs, Croats and Slovenes (in 1918), there was no dominant urban centre in terms of number of population and functional capacity. In the next 100 years Vojvodina retained identical morphological urban structure, but functional relations have changed considerably. With its central position in the region, Novi Sad stands out as the dominant regional centre. Until the second decade of the 21st century, Novi Sad has developed into the urban centre of international rank and importance. In addition to Novi Sad, other cities (e.g. Subotica, Zrenjanin, Pančevo, Sombor, Sremska Mitrovica, Kikinda, Vršac, Inđija, etc.) also have an important role in functional organization of the region, as well as the realization, maintenance and consolidation of polycentric urban system of Vojvodina. The main aim of this paper is to use modern methods for the analysis of the level of spatial development of large urban centres, as well as the possibilities for achieving functional polycentricity at the regional level.

The main aim of this paper is to use modern methods for the analysis of the level of spatial development of large urban centres, as well as the possibilities for achieving functional polycentricity at the regional level.",

The changes in the population were shown as an insufficient birthrate as well as an intense emigration. Apart from these, certain drastic changes in the household structure occurred. This article examines the total changes in the household number on the territory of the Republic of Serbia, with the municipality of Sokobanja as a prominent example. Other aims of the research are the analysis of the household composition and economic characteristics of the households.

Demographic endangerment of the rural settlements of Rogozna mountain and possibilities for their revitalization

AB - The study of the rural areas of Serbia is in the narrowest sphere of interest of the economic policy makers, with the aim of creating more balanced regional development. The economic underdevelopment of rural areas is a burden on the state as a whole, and one of the most important development issue. Based on the results of the 2002 and 2011 census, it can be concluded that the number of inhabitants in Serbia is reduced by 30,000 annually. Particularly worrying is the fact that the balance between rural and urban areas has been disturbed, at the expense of rural areas. The data show that out of 4,709 villages in Serbia, 700 of them have no demographic future. Abandoned houses, collapsed cooperative homes, shops, empty schools, closed ambulances - all of these are indicators of the seriousness of the problems that the mountain villages of Serbia, and therefore Rogozne, are facing. The situation in rural areas in Serbia may be best illustrated by the following: 1,200 villages are in a phase of disappearance, 50,000 houses are empty, and in another 150,000 no one currently lives, more than 1000 villages have fewer than 100 inhabitants. However, the most important problem is the average age of people living in the villages of Serbia - 43.6 years, while the average age of citizens in cities is 41.3 years. The residents of rural areas on Rogozna mountain consider that, should the economic situation improve, it should encourage positive demographic changes in these villages. This is only possible through ensuring a secure existence and sustainable agricultaral production (secure placement of agricultural products).

AB - The changes and oscillations in air temperature during the second half of the 20th and in the early 21st century, have become one of the major concerns of almost all scientific disciplines. Such changes are noticeable both at the local and global level. The objective of this paper is to point out that the changes of this climate element can also be detected at the local level. The research underlying this paper is, in terms of territory, limited to the Sokobanja basin in Eastern Serbia. The analysis relies on the data on air temperature for the period 1946-2012 taken from the Meteorological weather station located in Sokobanja. The obtained data were processed in line with the recommendations of the World Meteorological Organization. The evidenced statistically significant changes in air temperature were examined using the following statistical tests: Pettit test, Standard Normal Homogeneity test, Buishand range test, and von Neumann test.

abstract = "The changes and oscillations in air temperature during the second half of the 20th and in the early 21st century, have become one of the major concerns of almost all scientific disciplines. The evidenced statistically significant changes in air temperature were examined using the following statistical tests: Pettit test, Standard Normal Homogeneity test, Buishand range test, and von Neumann test.",

AB - In mid-July 2012, hundreds of fires spread over forest stands in the south of Europe. Considering available satellite and meteorological data we have tried to determine a method using analogy, whether these fires were preceded by the intensified solar activity. The justification of this approach lies in the belief that it is impossible by direct or indirect activity of man to set fire at the same time to the sites that are geographically separated. In this paper we have tried to test the hypothesis claiming that charged particles coming to us from the Sun may be responsible for the number of forest fires. Unlike some other situations when the potential explanation could be a sudden influx of the protons of different energy ranges, in our study, there are electrons as carriers of the potential explanation. Many previous studies results have shown that there is statistically significant relationship between the processes on the Sun and certain movements of air masses in the atmosphere our planet. The presented results in this paper of the correlation relationships between the mean hourly flows of electrons and the mean hourly air temperatures in Belgrade and Rome and the analysis of the synoptic situation as a function of the suggested model so far, indicate that the number of fires that were occurring more than a week, from July 15, 2012, in the south of Europe, were caused by electrons coming from the Sun.

AB - Karst bare is a hydrogeological phenomenon which denotes a karst terrain of limited area completely surrounded by rocks of low permeability, i.e. whose lower part is enclosed and bordered by more or less impervious rocks impeding ground water flowing out of the karst area. Sokobanja basin is one of the first localities where this kind of karst was detected. This study represents a preliminary geochemical analysis of karst bare samples from this locality. Atomic absorption spectrometric analysis shows that the studied samples are composed predominantly of Ca and contain minor amounts of Mg, probably in form of carbonate minerals obtained by dissolving with mineral acids. There are no detailed geochemical data about karst barre from this or any other locality in the available literature to date.

AB - The natural thermal-mineral springs in the Raska region in Serbia have been known since the ancient period. Temperatures of these sources between 26 degrees C and 51 degrees C have allowed the use of water for balneology and recreational purposes. Research over the past 50 years have pointed to the existence of significant amounts of thermal-mineral waters that occur in different tectonic zones and faults in the Dinarides. Bearing in mind the properties of thermal-mineral waters the paper deals with possibilities of their use as a renewable resource. The paper analyses the way of use of waters in three spas and one spring for health and recreational purposes and presents the possibilities for improving the use of unused water. The results hint at the possibility of direct use of heat energy from TM sources and substitution of fossil fuels, expenses of living and work in local communities. Direct use of geothermal energy, especially during the colder period of the year, would reduce the expenses of heating of public institutions, services and private households. (C) 2014 Elsevier Ltd. AB - Ethnopharmacological relevance: This study reports on the uses of medicinal plants and ethnobotanical significance of Mt. Rtanj, Eastern Serbia. The aim of the study was collecting information on plant utilization and creating the list of medicinal plants collected by local community in the region of Rtanj Mt. in Serbia. Methodology: A group of generally elderly people from the region were interviewed, asked to identify a certain number of plant taxa used against various human ailments. A quantitative ethnobotanical comparison has been performed in relation to other studies concerning the central Balkan Peninsula. Results: There is an inventory of 45 plant species recorded. At the family level, the most common in traditional usage were species of Labiatae (22%), Rosaceae (20%) and Compositae (13%). The results of the survey suggested that Hypericum perforatum was the most popular medicinal plant. Among the 7 different recorded types of preparation, the aerial parts of plants were the most popular (47.3%). The most frequently reported medicinal uses of herbal drugs include remedies for immune system (22.97%), respiratory system (15.77%) and digestive system disorders (15.32%). However, a comparatively small number of available plant species was used for medicinal purposes while the level of ethnobotanical diversity was lower when compared to adjacent regions. Conclusions: Ethnobotanical knowledge in this area is decreasing due to high emigration rates during the last period. The historically developed ethnobotanical heritage should be preserved and promoted on the larger level, getting the special position in the future management plans for this area.

On a 1:300000 multilayer map of Kosovo and Metohia, there are areas which would have been flooded in case of a maximum flooding wave, and what is also shown is the areas which were covered in water as the average was measured, including the areas used as projects of minimal flooding wave value. There is a layer showing the points with regular flood defense, including the places where protection needs to establish. The map includes the ratio of 1:300000, whilst the areas are calculated with the help of processing their dynamic static's, as well as using the formulae Gumbel Distribution and Weibull Formula. The data have been calculated with their maximum value, including the average and the minimum of flooding period embracing the time of 40 years.

AB - The temperature of charged particles coming from the Sun ranges from several hundred thousands to several millions °C, in extreme cases. Theoretical possibilities of the hydrodynamic air mass seizing by charged particles, i. e. solar wind, are discussed in this paper. On one hand, they are characterized by extremely high temperatures, on the other, by the compression of cold air at an approximate altitude of 90 km towards the top of the cloud of the cyclone, they influence the phenomenon of extremely low temperatures. By using the Mann-Whitney U test we have tried to determine the potential link between certain indicators of solar activity and resulting disturbances in the atmosphere. Analyzed data refer to global daily values for the 2004-2010 period. Our results confirm the possibility of coupling between the charged particles and the vortex air mass movements, based on which a more detailed study of the appearance of a tornado near Sombor on May 12th, 2010, was carried out. It has also been proven that there are grounds for a causality between the sudden arrival of the solar wind charged particles, i. e. protons, and the appearance of a tornado. Based on the presented approach, elements for an entirely novel prediction model are given.

AB - The paper focuses on the possibilities of generating electrical energy by means of PV solar plants of 1 MW in Serbia. Further on basic physical characteristics of solar cells made of monocryistalline silicon, CdTe and CIS solar cells and a description of the fixed PV solar plants, one-axis and dual-axis tracking PV solar plants are given. The paper proceeds to tackle the legislative frame concerning renewable sources of energy and the current state of the use of PV systems in Serbia, climate conditions and energy potential of the renewable sources in Serbia. Apart from PVGIS solar map of Serbia real meteorological data for 17 towns in Serbia are given. Based on PVGIS program, geographycal position and the results of PVGIS calculation of the yearly average values of the optimal panel inclination, solar irradiation on the horizontal, vertical and optimally inclined plane, ratio of diffuse to global solar irradiation and linke turbidity for some cities in Serbia are given. Total for year sum of global irradiation per square meter received by the modules of the fixed PV solar plants, optimally inclined one-axis and dual-axis tracking PV solar plants of 1 MW and total for year electricity production of different types of PV solar plant of 1 MW for 23 cities in Serbia obtained by PVGIS are given. Comparison of total for year electricity production of different types of PV solar plant of 1 MW with monocrystaline silicon, CdTe and CIS solar modules, respective, for 23 cities in Serbia is given. Calculations performed by PVGIS program have shown that irrespectable of the type of PV solar plants, most electrical energy in Serbia can be generated by means of PV solar plants with CdTe solar cells. Some practical data and considerations given in this paper can be used by a customer or company keen to invest in the PV sector in Serbia. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - The Municipality of Sokobanja is situated in the central part of Eastern Serbia. In terms of its foregoing socio-geographic development, it is a specific geographic area. Its specific nature and characteristics are reflected in the steady depopulation indicted by a constant decrease of the population rate, the reduced population growth, and the permanent demographic trend of population aging. The aim of this paper is to point out to the main characteristics of the socio-geographic development of this municipality in the second half of the 20th century and at the beginning of the 21st century.

AB - Man, as a conscious being has always had a need for collecting and storing data on the environment in which he lives. Drawings on cave walls are the beginnings of planetary libraries, universal database, the forerunner of modern information technology. Geographic Information System is a special form of information systems, applied to geographic data. By placing the maps and other spatial information in digital format, GIS data enables the organization to understand their spatial relationships. Horizontal objectives to support the development of European Union information society and environmental management and sustainable development. Serbia acceded to it through various projects. In order to manage natural resources in a sustainable manner requires accurate and timely information in order to react to changes in space. Participation in the project of establishing GIS portal River Sava (with Croatia, Slovenia and Bosnia-Herzegovina) will enable the collection of relevant data to facilitate management of the Sava river. In recent years, is warmer with less precipitation during the months vegetation. In important for the Sixth Framework Programme of the European Union for the Western Balkans project launched WATER WEB. He will provide strategic water management practices in three Western Balkan river basin, the base models of exploitation of water and fertilizers for the four major crops, modern technology and procedures, including the so-called irrigation, partial root drying, agronomic and economic evaluation of a new culture resistant to salt, socio-economic assessment procedures for water management and irrigation and the use of GIS (geographic information systems) database and the possibility of their modelling for the Western Balkans. Each field in Serbia will soon get a "passport", geo-information system, which will find all the arable land in Serbia. The system should show whether the particular land can be used for crop, vegetable, livestock, wine or fruit production.

AB - Hydropower, biomass, biogas, biofuels, wind power, solar energy and geothermal energy are the major resources to provide the Republic of Serbia with most of renewable energy in the future. In this paper, the focus will be on renewable sources, specifically on thermomineral, thermal and mineral waters in the Carpatho-Balkanides Region (Eastern Serbia). The territory of Serbia is very rich in sources of mineral, thermal and thermomineral water. These numerous sources differ in their physico-chemical properties. Thus, they represent a very important natural resource with versatile possibilities for their usage. Region of Carpatho-Balkanides (Eastern Serbia) is highlighted in this regard. The distribution of mineral, thermal and thermo-mineral waters in this region is very significant, both by the number of known occurrences and deposits, as well as by the presence of certain types or classes and subclasses of water. This potential, at the same time, represents the basis for the development of various activities in the fields of medicine, tourism, sport and recreation, water bottling industry, as well as in processing of various mineral, agriculture etc. All these facts imply on the need for detailed and complex investigations in the field of hydrogeology of this natural wealth which offers, in economic terms, the great opportunities for the development and growth. However, the practice, on studied territory, showed neither proper understanding nor proper approach to the exploitation of this raw potential.

AB - FTIR spectroscopy has been used to detailed study of bituminous limestone samples from two different locations at Maganik Mountain (Montenegro). Bituminous limestone at Maganik Mountain occurs as carbonate sediments in three levels and belongs to the early Cretaceous. Our specimens come from the oldest sediments of this limestone belonging to Barremian age. Particular attention has been given to investigation of isolated asphaltenes and kerogens. The FTIR technique provides fine determination of various organic and inorganic functional groups, as well as aliphatic and aromatic carbon and hydrogen. Due to the structural complexity of kerogens and asphaltenes, in this study we have done correlations of particular infrared absorptions to various functional groups. The asphaltenes of studied samples show higher contribution of aromatic structures than the kerogens. Notable differences in FTIR spectra of some samples that are reflected as shift of peak locations and a variety of intensities are attributed to eventual differences in the microbial precursors and/or depositional environments, conditions of sedimentation and/or genesis.

AB - The goal of this paper is to show possibilities of multidisciplinary approach to the bioclimatic research in tourism, particularly in the spa tourism. In addition to the treatment of various diseases with thermal and mineral water, mud, gas and healing climate, modern spa also implies their importance in disease prevention and more often in recreation. The idea of the paper is to present how weather can be evaluated for recreational needs in the spa resorts. The results show biothermal weather classification for recreation based on the outdoor human heat balance. In this analysis, daily meteorological data (meteorological station of Doboj) were used for two extreme months, January and July. Town of Doboj was taken for analysis because there is a spa resorts in its vicinity.
