AB - This research deals with the evaluation of tourist attractions in selected protected areas (PAs) in Serbia for the purpose of developing ecotourism. Using the integral AHP-SWOT method, two authentic mountain areas were analyzed—Stara Planina Nature Park and Suva Planina Special Nature Reserve. The results confirmed the presence of numerous natural and, to a lesser extent, anthropogenic resources that represent the basis for the future ecotourism activities. However, significant weaknesses were also registered, which are reflected in overall poverty, underdeveloped infrastructure and depopulation. The analysis also showed that the highest rated factors for the
development of ecotourism are local products that should be offered on the regional market, as well as the use of the geographical position of both areas (near the state border) through the use of donor funds (IPA funds). The application of the AHP-SWOT method enabled the definition and prioritization of several development strategies, of which the ones with the greatest weight are based on the use of the variegated biodiversity of both PAs. This research advances knowledge about strategic decision-making in PAs and could be beneficial to destination managers for the creation of successful strategic plans. Results suggest that future actions should be aimed at maximizing the detected advantages, which means creating an appropriate development policy, drafting legislation, encouraging social mobilization activities and determining the institutional elements for the development and management of ecotourism.

AB - Specialization in tourism is realized within the offer and as a part of the modern tourist demand. It appears and develops in parallel with tourism, due to changes in society and the economy, which makes it conceptually complex. Apart from tourism, specialization can be studied from other aspects, such as social sciences or economics. In order to investigate the spatial characteristics of tourist traffic, the specialization index and the regional factor were calculated. With the help of the regional factor (Rfa), a change in the geographical distribution of tourist arrivals of foreign tourists in a certain period of time was determined, putting a smaller and larger spatial unit (Belgrade and Serbia) in a relationship. The time component of the research is defined by a ten-year period (2011–2020) and available statistical data. The specialization index shows diversification in the context of the countries from which tourists come, in order to investigate the focus on individual countries, ie. changes in tourism demand. High values of the specialization index are not considered desirable, because in that case the destination is sensitive to one or a smaller number of emitting countries. Therefore, the negative trends are in appropriately reflected on the tourism in the destination. The aim of the research is to determine whether the tourist polarization of Belgrade in relation to other destinations in Serbia is evident. The results of the research are expected to show to what extent and why there is a fluctuation of foreign
tourist stays in Belgrade and Serbia.

Beyond symbolic: the role of tourism ethnocentrism in domestic travel

AB - As a positive ingroup bias, tourism ethnocentrism (TE) is considered a symbolic reason for travelling that drives tourists to choose domestic destinations as a way of supporting their country and its tourism industry. To provide an additional perspective on TE, through the lens of cognitive dissonance and rationalization, we studied its relationships with other factors that could affect tourists’ decision to travel domestically. The study was conducted in Serbia and used structural equation modelling to test these relationships. Our findings indicate that tourism xenophilia and tourism thalassophilia, defined as a preference for seaside summer holidays, do not affect TE and have only a limited negative impact on willingness to travel domestically. Constraints for travelling abroad and increased destination awareness as a consequence of the pandemic positively affect TE, thus questioning its purely symbolic nature and indicating that levels of TE in tourists could change due to external factors.

AB - Rural tourism is seen as one of the aspects of sustainable economic growth and socio-cultural development of rural Serbia. During the Covid-19 pandemic, international tourist traffic declined, and tourism and hospitality as service activities suffered serious economic consequences. The aim of this paper is to examine the impact of pandemics on rural areas of Western Serbia, bearing in mind that the natural environment and rural areas have gained in importance as safer to live in. The research was conducted through an electronic questionnaire, by surveying the providers of catering services in this part of Serbia. The obtained results indicate a decline in the number of tourists (domestic and foreign) during the pandemic, but mostly positive attitudes of service providers regarding the prospects and sustainability of their business in the coming period. The data obtained in this research can be useful to local governments and tourism representatives in finding the best solutions to provide support to the bearers of the tourist offer of rural areas.

AB - The role of seasonality in the sustainability of tourism is multiple and complex. The connection between seasonality and sustainability is even more complex when it comes to protected areas. This connection was investigated on the examples of selected protected mountain areas in Serbia ‒ Kopaonik and Tara National Parks, and Stara planina and Zlatibor Nature Parks. The Gini index was used to measure seasonality, and to show the imbalance in the monthly distribution of the number of tourist overnight stays in the mentioned destinations, in the period 2013‒2021. The research results show that the analyzed protected mountain areas in Serbia have different values of the Gini index, which is conditioned by their natural predispositions for tourism development (e.g. altitude and duration of snow cover), and at the same time the levels of tourist development of the area. In order to reduce the effects of seasonality, in each of the destinations that are the subject of this paper, alternative types of tourism and activities are implemented.

AB - The registration of travel agencies in the sector of public administration contributes
to monitoring and analyzing the level of tourism development in the country. Multiple
benefits of keeping records of travel agencies in the public administration sector include
all interested parties, domestic and foreign physical entities as beneficiaries of tourism
services, the private sector as providers of these services and the public sector as the
creator of policies and strategies of tourism in the country. Establishing and keeping the
register of tourism within Serbian Business Registers Agency as the unique, electronic
and central public database of registered and/or recorded entities performing tasks in the
field of tourism on the tourism market of the country, contributes to the monitoring of
the level of tourism development, analysis of the condition of the unified tourist offer,
encouraging development initiatives in the tourism sector, the implementation of
modern solutions in the field of planning agency business in Serbia. The study uses
mixed qualitative and quantitative methods, including field research and comparative
analysis and description. The results suggest that the initial hypothesis, which refers to
the current unsatisfactory level of the system for the registration of travel agencies in the
public administration in the Republic of Serbia, is valid.

AB - This study aims to investigate the level of satisfaction of foreign tourists, specifically
millennials, based on different dimensions of destination image and the quality of the tourist services in Belgrade, the capital of the Republic of Serbia, as an emerging destination. Despite the tarnished image attached to the city after the Yugoslav Wars and the economic crisis in the 1990s, this emerging destination is becoming more popular among foreign visitors. A sample of 359 international tourists was surveyed. Structural equation modelling was used to test the relationships between the constructs. The results confirmed the positive effects of image and quality on satisfaction as well as a positive and direct effect of image on quality. Moreover, there was a partial mediation of quality between image and satisfaction. The findings have significant marketing and management implications for destination stakeholders. They provide useful insights for choosing effective strategies and an appropriate business tourism model in emerging destinations that can further help them to become more competitive.

Ciljevi istraživanja su identifikacija trenutnih posledica pandemije i upoređivanje poslovanja ugostiteljskih objekata u ruralnom turizmu pre i tokom pandemije Covid-19, uzimanjem u obzir principa održivosti.
AB - Sustainable tourism is developed in accordance with social and economic principles, with respect to the environment and cultures. The importance of local communities from rural areas and their right for sustainable tourism development are well-established. However, the Covid19 pandemic caused a rapid decline of tourist movement and uncertainty of recovery of the tourism economy. The research for this study was conducted via survey questionnaire, which was distributed to hospitality objects in rural areas of the West Serbia tourist region. In addition to the general information, the questionnaire comprised a set of questions related to tourists and perspectives perceived by the service providers. The research objectives are identification of the current consequences of the pandemic and comparison of business of hospitality objects in rural tourism before and during the Covid19 pandemic, by taking into consideration the principles of sustainability. The research results are expected to indicate a growing role of domestic tourism during the pandemic, as well as the perspectives of survival of certain hospitality objects. From the methodological perspective, quantitative and qualitative presentation of the data will provide an insight into the biggest and smallest challenges faced by the rural tourism in the studied area, which will provide practical implications for the subjects within the tourist offer of this part of Serbia.

AB - The strategic planning of rural development is focused on both economic growth and sustainable development. Sustainable rural development is essential for conserving and improving resources, while economic growth contributes to a better standard of living. The aim of the research is to determine, using the participatory rural appraisal (PRA) methodology on the example of the village of Zlakusa, the economic activities developed in the village, the importance of rural tourism, and the scope of sustainable development taken into account in rural development. The results of the research show that the success of the rural community depends on: diversification of economic activities, which is accompanied by cohesion of the population through association and organization; organized activities aimed at local or republican authorities; activation of human and social capital; and initiating activities involving marginalized groups. Educating the population outside formal education improves the sustainable and economic development of the village and enables rural tourism to become an important part of economic activities and a channel for the commercialization of natural and cultural contents.

Variations in seasonality in spa centres of Serbia

AB - Seasonality of tourist demand imposes a number of issues related to the destination’s carrying capacity and business activities of the individual service providers in tourism. As one indicator of seasonal fluctuation of tourist demand, the Gini index is identified in order to establish monthly concentration of tourists. In this study, the Gini index was calculated for four spa tourism destinations in Serbia (Vrnjačka Banja, Sokobanja, Niška Banja, and Prolom Banja), in order to establish variability in the seasonality. The research took into consideration the period 2010-2019. Research results indicate that Niška Banja Spa has the lowest values of the Gini index, while Vrnjačka Banja Spa and Sokobanja Spa have the highest values, whereby no values are higher that .45 (mostly between .30 and .39). Given that the theoretically lowest value of the Gini index is 0 (smallest seasonal concentration) and the highest is 1 (biggest concentration), the selected spas still do not have particularly high degree of seasonal concentration of tourists. Possibilities for reduction of tourist demand seasonality are pointed out, given its impact on tourism planning and its economic effects.

AB - The spatial structure of tourist attractions can be presented both qualitatively and quantitatively. One of the indicators of the spatial structure of tourism is the index of geographical concentration of tourist attractions. The geographical concentration of tourist attractions represents the ratio of the number of tourist attractions in the observed area and its structural parts and the total number of structural units of the analyzed area. This paper aims to determine the spatial distribution of attractions in the administrative territories of Belgrade municipalities and to establish correlations with tourist attendance. The number and spatial distribution of accommodation capacities are the largest in the central city municipalities so that the number of visitors is the largest in them. At the same time, the central city municipalities have the highest concentration of tourist attractions. For data collection, the authors used field research, OSM (Open Street Maps), Google maps, with software processing ArcGIS 10.2. The research results enabled the definition of the model of distribution of tourist attractions and indicated its application. This model of distribution of tourist attractions shows that they are mostly concentrated in the city center. This also means a small spatial connection of tourist attractions in the city center and peripheral parts.

AB - The relationship between the environment and tourism can be perceived from several different aspects. The concept of sustainability and its principles are one of the most frequently analysed approaches and the motivational basis for visiting can show how much the protected nature and healthy environment matter to the tourists. Based on the internal motivators, we examined whether the tourism in Derdap is controlled, on a smaller scale, and qualitatively focused. A total of 484 respondents participated in the survey research. The comparison of attitudes was performed in relation to the demographic attributes of the respondents (gender, age, education). Target getups of tourists who prefer sustainable tourism have been identified. Sustainable tourism is a significant determinant in the further development of tourism in the protected area National Park Derdap. The results of the research, based on 12 statements, performed t-testing and one-factor variance analysis (ANOVA), show that the visitors 'greatest interests are related to the environment (natural as well as cultural value of the area). The researched motivational factors (new experiences and events, relaxation and rest, acquiring new knowledge - cultural and educational motivation) are based on sustainability. The results of this research can be applied in practice by implementing them through various management and marketing plans in the National Park Derdap.

AB - The study presents the touristic offer and demand for cultural attractions of Belgrade, on the basis of the results of the questionnaire survey, i.e., attitudes of surveyees. The aim of the study is to establish hierarchical order of cultural attractions of Belgrade, attributes and factors of attractiveness, as well as of other content necessary for comprehensive consideration of touristic offer. Program package for statistical processing and analysys IBM Statistics 20 was used for obtaining results. Results of the research are supposed to demonstrate whether the biggest importance among cultural attractions of Belgrade belongs to art, ambient units, sacral objects, the fortress, museums or events, historical, artistic, esthetic value or authenticity, and also to indicate to the importance of factors and the content of offer, necessary in formation of touristic product.

AB - The objective of this investigation is to put in evidence the difficulties what it entails the so declaimed sustainable rural tourism development. For that aim, we have chosen two tourism clusters of rural areas corresponding to the Upper and Lower Danube, in a country in Eastern Europe of medium development like as Serbia. The comparison is one of the essential principles of geographical research and in this case are allowed establish differences and similarities between a nature destination with strong deficiencies of infrastructure. On the other side, it is evident an increasing presence of international tourism and destination with better services and predominance of historical and cultural attractions, more oriented to local tourism. The exhaustive bibliographical and field research are complemented by a deep geostatistical analysis of information which are collected from year to year by municipalities. The results obtained are brought knowledge with views to a strategic planning on the path of sustainability.

AB - As an integral part of tourist-geographical research of values, tourist valorization is considered complementary to various spatial, economic, ecological and social aspects. The paper discusses the possibilities and limitations of improving the tourist valorization of the Viminacium Archaeological Site, using the existing research and literature, as well as the field work of the author, and also two complex models of valorization have been presented. The results of the research show that numerous indicators applied in different models help complex view of the archaeological site and environment, and that they are in accordance with modern trends in scientific research, which significantly contributes to the improvement of evaluation of Viminacium for the purpose of tourism.

AB - This research is based on identifying dynamics and tradition as cultural processes. Wine production in Negotin wine region (Rajac and Rogljevo area), eastern Serbia, is a family activity, but research has revealed some changes in traditional knowledge. We have explored the authenticity of tourism products on offer: whether the winemaking method is traditional, if there are rituals (traditions) regarding grape growing and winemaking as a cultural form, and if so, whether residents present them to tourists, as well as what the external effects related to the changes are. The aim of this research is to establish the reasons for changes in the way wine is produced, in the way of life, and whether tourism is a factor in revitalising traditional winemaking or not. This paper examines the development of changes, and explains how they are affected by the value system of the local community, their knowledge or experiences, what is considered traditional and what modern. Pimnice, folk architecture structures where wine was produced and stored were analysed in relation to their significance both in the past and in the present. We have investigated the response of residents to changes in production, whether there is a will to continue participating in viticulture, and the possibilities of public-private partnership with regard to the increase in wine production and restoration of these unique wine cellars.

AB - Rudnik Mountain, as the most dominant mountain in the Šumadija region, is located about 100 km south of Belgrade, which is connected to Ibar highway. Because of its exceptional climatic conditions, in 1922 it was declared an air spa, and the geologic-geomorphological features (mountain peaks more than 1000 m above sea level, lookouts, caves, etc.), as well as the wealth of water and preserved flora and fauna, contributed to its excursion potential. Archaeological findings testify to early habitation of the area. In ancient times the mountain was the scene of mining, and remnants of the period before and after the arrival of the Romans, the Serbian medieval state, and Turkish times are preserved. The preserved cultural heritage (monasteries: Blagoveštenje, Voljavča, Vraćevšnica, Nikolje and Petkovica; the residence of Prince Miloš, the remains of medieval towns; Ostrvica and Gradovi; archaeological site Misa; remains of mining pits and localities; rich monumental complex, etc.) had a significant role in the development of mountain tourism in Rudnik Mountain in Serbia. Regionally recognizable as a year-round holiday destination with great potential for excursion, recreation, sports, health, and other forms of tourism development, Mountain Rudnik has, thanks to the rich cultural heritage, a chance for popularization through various forms of trips, excursions, schools in nature, recreational classes, and other programs of travel agencies intended for children and adults.

Elements of tourist destinations: Example of Tourist-recreation centre in Koštunići

AB - There are various classifications of elements of tourist destinations in the scientific literature. For optimal consideration of elements of tourist destinations, the World Tourist Destination has proposed the FAS methodology applicable to the rural tourism destinations as well. In this paper, factors, attractors and support (FAS) were applied to the example of the eco-village (tourist-recreation centre) in Koštunići. Natural, human and capital factors, natural, cultural and attractors in the form of centres for activities, support services, transport and catering as support to the tourism development, have been shown on the basis of field observations, interviews and relevant literature. On the example of tourist-recreation centre in Koštunići, the research results show that in each subgroup of elements, there are the elements which are key drivers of tourism development, but also those which have a limiting effect on this industry.

abstract = "There are various classifications of elements of tourist destinations in the scientific literature. On the example of tourist-recreation centre in Koštunići, the research results show that in each subgroup of elements, there are the elements which are key drivers of tourism development, but also those which have a limiting effect on this industry., U naučnoj literaturi postoje raznovrsne klasifikacije elemenata turističke destinacije.

AB - This paper presents the results of the knowledge of students about sacral monuments research based on surveys conducted on students at the College of Tourism and the Faculty of Geography (study program Tourism) in Belgrade. The subjects of the research were: students’ interests in sacral monuments in Serbia, levels of information about them, curricula in which they studied about sacral monuments in Serbia, the influence of practice and travel on the knowledge of sacral monuments. Statistical analysis of the data using SPSS showed that students are interested in learning more about sacral monuments in Serbia, that curricula are predominantly focused on artistic values, while tourism and economic aspects of sacral monuments are relatively neglected. The results also revealed that sacral monuments of minority confessions are often neglected in the curricula. Students believe they can learn more about sacral monuments through travel and practice rather than through lectures.

AB - This paper proposes one new attempt to formulate a mathematical approach to climate parameters in the context of their complex implications for tourist activities through the tourism climate comfort index (TCCI). This paper also aims to formulate an original and optimal mathematical correlation between readily obtainable climate parameters (mean monthly air temperature, monthly amplitude of air temperatures, monthly insolation, average monthly relative air humidity and the number of rainy days), which results in values of the TCCI. Simultaneously, this index will provide the values correspondent to the values of air temperatures (degrees C), which represents a comparative baseline understandable equally for tourists, tourism planners and managers. The example of Serbia as a mainland country in the south-east of Europe was used to apply the proposed methodology. The spatial-temporal variability of TCCI is formulated on basis of data for the period 1961-2000 while for testing model was used selected period 2001-2010 on the sample of 26 meteorological stations distributed all around Serbia. For this purpose a standard statistical techniques were applied and ArcGIS software was used for analyze of the variability of the TCCI in relation to the altitude, which is of particular importance for the development of tourism in the mountains. Checking variability of the index was carried out in relation to statistical data about number of tourists on the three most visited tourist destinations which are of importance for the development of urban, mountain and spa tourism, the leading forms of tourism activities on the territory of Serbia. The obtained results correspond with the fact of the pronounced seasonality of tourism market and thus may represent a good basis for future tourism planning and management.

AB - Studies and researches on the role of a local community in tourism development of rural areas emphasize the significance of inhabitants’ attitudes about the state and perspectives of this activity. In this context, in the professional literature, the term CBT (community-based tourism) is used, which implies the involvement of local communities and planning of tourism development. The aim of the study is to determine the local population’s influence on starting an initiative for a tourist arranging of the village Zabrega in the Municipality of Paraćin, especially the sacral objects in the Crnica River Gorge. The following methods were applied: method of direct observation, analysis, synthesis, interview and survey in which the questions were of a closed and open type. Results of the research survey were analyzed in the software package for statistical processing and analysis of the data SPSS 20.00. It has been stated that the population has a positive attitude about the Society Petrus, which is the main organizer of the activities when the prosperity of the village Zabrega is in question, and that the local community is interested in engaging in the tourist activities, as demonstrated by numerous practical examples.

AB - Tourist destination competitiveness, by the model proposed by Crouch and Ritchie, can be analysed on the basis of thirty-six attributes grouped under the following determinants: key resources and attractions, support factors, situational conditions, destination management and destination policy, planning and development. This paper analyses the key resources and attractions that include natural conditions, culture, activities, events and entertainment, superstructure and links to emission markets. By the use of the AHP method (Analytic Hierarchy Process), the hierarchy of four destinations of urban tourism in Serbia (Belgrade, Novi Sad, Kragujevac and Niš) was established.
Upotrebom AHP metode (analitički hijerarhijski proces) utvrđena je hijerarhija četiri destinacije gradskog turizma u Srbiji (Beograd, Novi Sad, Kragujevac i Niš).
