Demographic ageing of the old population of Serbia

Abstract

Due to the intense demographic aging, which represents one of main features of the population development of Serbia, the study of the old population is gaining more and more importance in demographic science. This paper aims to assess the basic demographic characteristics and changes in the age structure of the old Serbian population in the last two decades, which indicates the internal aging process of the population older than 65 years. This paper specially analyses the dynamics of the elderly contingent (those aged 80 and over). Also, the spatial dimensions of the aging processes of the old on the level of individual regions in Serbia have been explored. The spatial differences of reached demographic ageing of the old population by the municipalities have been shown as well.

Usled intenzivnog demografskog starenja, koje predstavlja jedno od osnovnih obeležja populacionog razvitka Srbije, proučavanju starog stanovništva pridaje se sve veći značaj u demografskoj nauci. Ovaj rad ima za cilj sagledavanje osnovnih demografskih karakteristika i promena starosne strukture starog stanovništva Srbije u poslednje dve decenije, čime se ukazuje na interni proces starenja populacije starije od 65 godina. U radu je posebno analizirana dinamika staračkog kontingenta (lica starosti 80 i više godina). Takođe, istražuju se prostorne dimenzije procesa starenja starih na nivou pojedinačnih regiona Srbije. Prikazane su i prostorne razlike dostignute demografske starosti starog stanovništva po opštinama.
