Geographic and historic characteristics of Pančevački rit

Abstract
The oldest inhabitants of Pančevački rit were Sarmats. This region was populated by Scordists, one of the Iliric tribes too. In the 12. year a.d. the region feel under the Roman rule. Remains of material culture dating from times still can be found. The Slav tribe of Serbs inhabited this region in VI and VII centuries. The process of Serbization of native dwellers was completed soon. The region feel under the Turkeys rule in 16th century. Economic, cultural and educational development of Serbs was sloped under the Turkish rule. During the Turkish feudal government great ethnic, religious and cultural changes took place. The First and Second World Wars brought negative effect to socio-economic and cultural development of this region. Rapid population increase in Pančevački rit started after Second World War especially after 1960. when industrial development started in Pančevački rit. The industrial development led to a fast development of the settlement.
U radu je izložen istorijski i geografski razvoj Pančevačkog rita. Najstariji stanovnici Pančevačkog rita bili su Sarmati. Ova regija bila je naseljena i Skrdijscima. Pančevački rit potpao je pod vlast Rimljana 12. godine nove ere. Ostaci materijalne kulture mogu se pronaći i danas. Slovensko pleme Srbi, naselili su ovaj region u VI i VII veku. U XVI veku Pančevački rit potpao je pod tursku vladavinu. Ekonomski, kulturni i obrazovni razvoj Srba bio je zaustavljen tokom turske vladavine. Tokom vladavine Turaka, došlo je do velikih etničkih, religioznih i kulturnih promena. Porast broja stanovnika u Pančevačkom ritu nastupio je posle Drugog svetskog rata, a posebno posle 1960. kada je započet industrijski razvoj Pančevačkog rita.
