The flood in the basin of Jasenica in July 1999: The analysis of rainfalls

Abstract

The flood in Jasenica which occurred in early summer in 1999 was followed by catastrophic consequences It was pouring with spring rain. In July a heavier rain began to fall, 241,4 mm in Smederevska Palanka and even 3330 mm in Jarmenovci. As the rivers of this basin couldn't hold that quantity of water they overflowed. What's more the underground waters rose to such a high level that real lakes were formed in the valleys. The work has shown that such quantity of rainfalls is mainly within the general rainy state of the observed basin. It is true that in July 1999 the ram was beyond the monthly maximums taken from a period of thirty five year analysis however what is more important tor the genesis of flood is the intensity of rainfalls during a rainy day (before the flood). The greatest quantity of rainfalls during a day in Smederevska Palanka is approximately twice less than the apsolute daily maximum from the analysed period that amounts to 129 'i mm. At several places, spread over the western parts it fell more than 100 mm of ram during a day but those places are bound to suffer from heavy rams anyhow. Analyzing the synoptic meteorological conditions above Europe shortly before the flood one can tell that they were typical of this season. Cyclones occurred together with convections. So the flood was provoked by a natural phenomenon that is considered to be 'normal' for this territory a large quantity of spring rainfalls saturating the land with waters from the previous period with underground waters risen to a high level and with the coincidence of high waters in most rivers

U julu 1999. godine na sliv Jasenice se izlučila neuobičajeno velika količina padavina. Tada je sliv dobio oko 300 tt kiše, a za samo četiri dana (između 8. i 11. jula)je palo oko 150 tt vodenog taloga. Pošto su i prethodni meseci bili natprosečno vlažni došlo je do izlivanja glavne reke i mnogih njenih pritoka. Poplava je imala katastrofalne posledice. Cilj ovoga rada je da dovede u vezu padavine koje su uzrokovale poplavu sa pluviometrijskim režimom sliva Jasenice i tadašnjom sinoptičkom situacijom iznad Evrope.
