Demographic realities are substantially determined by economic and social circumstances and institu...tions. But they also influence those circumstances and institutions through a variety of potential channels. What population development means for one country is hard to imagine, but we will try to explain that issue in the case of Serbia. Real face of the declining demographic trends in Serbia is below replacement fertility, and this is essential issue of this paper. If we accept that mortality is very low, and that modern medicine can’t increase life expectancy any further, than we can say that only fertility changes and inherited age structure affects contemporary age structure. Fertility rate’s decrease in the long period is basic cause of demographic process of population ageing, where population ageing means increase of the relative share of elderly, and decrease of relative share of youth in total population. Population ageing in Serbia is a result of great decrease of fertility rates, and its influence on age structure in the long period. Ageing have completely changed age structure, so that Serbia faced below replacement of working age population. In the approximate period of next ten to fifteen years we will face the lack of over 400 thousand people in the working age, comparing with a present time situation. Conclusion is that relatively high share of working age population because of inherited age structure and baby boom generation will expire, and Serbia will face unusually high share of old dependants, and in the same time below replacement of working age population.
