Abstract
Both extrinsic and intrinsic motives of students are very important in the teaching process, although we would give priority to the intrinsic ones since they contribute more successfully to the development of a long-termed and stable motivation for school learning. The teaching process should stimulate: self-confirmation, attitudes towards studying, focus on exact aims, students' interests, curiosity and positive emotional attitudes towards the contents of the geography curriculum. There is a wide range of didactic factors involved in evoking and developing the students' interest among which the use of the media may stand out. A proper way to increase the interest of students would primarily involve the transformation of interesting, visual, and close-to-life contents (usually offered in the media) into an active process of search for truth. Global spread, in space and time, of information via modern media, creates conditions laden with numerous impacts, perceivable and concealed, of e...ducational, cultural and moral nature. Bearing this in mind, teachers should include the media in the teaching process. In the research we report on, one of the aims was to examine up to what extent the use of the media in a concept of active teaching can influence the development of motivation among students. The results showed that the use of the media in active teaching had a positive influence on: the students' curiosity, their research activities, interest and other observed indicators of motivation.
