AB - Climate change is one of the largest environmental issues causing hydroclimatological extremes such as floods, droughts, and aridity. The aim of this study is to assess the observed and projected climate changes in Bačka (Serbia). Detailed trend analyses and possible climate scenarios over Bačka has not been presented up to now. In this paper, four data sets were extracted and calculated: mean annual air temperature, mean air temperatures during the vegetation period, mean annual precipitation and total precipitation during the vegetation period. The presented parameters were obtained from the annual meteorological reports of the Republic Hydrometeorological Service of Serbia. Trend equation based on linear regression, trend magnitude according to the trend equation, and Mann-Kendall statistics have been used for trend analysis of climatic parameters. A GIS modeling of the possible climate scenario was created according to the Beijing Climate Center Climate System Model (BCC-CSM2-MR). Based on the trend equations, positive trends related to air temperature and precipitation variables are dominant. The trend magnitude shows the largest mean increase in all time series related to air temperature during the vegetation period. The highest mean precipitation increase occurs only in two time series. The Mann-Kendall statistics showed significantly positive trends in 11 cases and no changes in 9 cases. According to BCC-CSM2-MR, changes will be especially dominant in case of air temperatures. The expected changes in the total precipitation during the vegetation period show a tendency towards semiarid conditions. The presented results of observed and projected climate changes demand adaptation measures, especially from the aspect of sustainable agriculture.

AB - The sustainability of rural settlements in Serbia has become the main focus of strategic
rural development planning. Although it is still difficult to measure the quality of life of the citizens
of the Republic of Serbia, preliminary results show that it is necessary to go beyond the GDP as
the only or one of its most important indicators. A multidimensional approach and analysis at
the local level is necessary for more comprehensive insight into quality of life in order to avoid
erroneous or simplified conclusions. Striving to provide more detailed insight into the attitudes
and needs of the local population, this research uses a qualitative approach. Subjective measures
of how people feel and function in everyday life can predict future reactions, many of which are in
the domain of the interests of local public services. The aim of the research is to apply measurement
indicators through six dimensions of well-being in order to determine to what extent the inhabitants
of rural communities are satisfied with some indicators and how they assess their own well-being.
The research results illustrate the importance of understanding the needs of the local population and
the perception of overall life experience in monitoring balanced rural development. The research can
be adapted and applied to any rural community. Thus, only by developing a participatory approach
can one strive for community-based rural development.

AB - Although present in Serbia, the phenomenon of urban shrinkage has not been identified as a problem by local decision-makers. The purpose of this study is to present this phenomenon and to
show the causes and consequences of urban shrinkage in Serbia. The analysis covers a recent
period, 2002-2011, when this process was the most intensive. This study employs the method of
grouping towns affected by the shrinkage process. The multi-criteria evaluation method was used to determine the types of towns according to the cause of shrinking, the intensity of the shrinkage factors and the character of the process. In the study of urban shrinkage in the territory of Serbia,
environmental factors were considered as one of the causes. Environmental problems are an important factor of urban shrinkage in the developed world. Nevertheless, in Serbia, the economic causes are so dominant that they overpower major environmental issues as potential factors of the shrinking process. Apart from the key factors in this process in most East European and South-East European countries, urban shrinkage in Serbia has its roots in other factors – namely, the political instability caused by inter-ethnic conflicts in the Western Balkans during the 1990s.

AB - This article presents geographic information system usage in transportation management for comfort calculations, analysing vehicle vibration data measured during patient transportation. The main goal of this article is to develop a methodology for automatic discomfort cause recognition (DCR) that may be tested under real life conditions. We analysed differences between uncomfortable locations detected by passengers during patient transportation (according to their subjective opinions) and uncomfortable locations detected by the measurement system. The measuring system is based on the three-axis accelerometer which is used to determine road comfort values for specific locations gathered by a GPS module. The results obtained were compared with data collected by passengers. During driving, when they experienced discomfort, passengers marked locations in near real time using the GIS. The data thus obtained were analysed with the data obtained by DCR. For the first time, the application of GIS provides analytical tools to create spatial data and define spatial data relations that determine comfort. Testing under real conditions, involving three separate cases, shows a high degree of correlation between the results. The proposed system allows dynamic comfort threshold criteria management and provides a visual representation of summarized tabular data.

AB - The urban microclimate is gradually changing due to climate change, extreme weather
conditions, urbanization, and the heat island effect. In such an altered environment, outdoor thermal comfort can have a strong impact on public health and quality of life in urban areas. In this study, three main urban areas in Serbia were selected: Belgrade (Central Serbia), Novi Sad (Northern Serbia), and Niš (Southern Serbia). The focus was on the temporal assessment of OTC, using the UTCI over a period of 20 years (1999–2018) during different seasons. The main aim is the general estimation of the OTC of Belgrade, Novi Sad, and Niš, in order to gain better insight into the bioclimatic condition, current trends and anomalies that have occurred. The analysis was conducted based on an hourly (7 h, 14 h, and 21 h CET) and “day by day” meteorological data set. Findings show the presence of a growing trend in seasonal UTCI anomalies, especially during summer and spring. In addition, there is a notable increase in the number of days above the defined UTCI thresholds for each season. Average annual UTCIs values also show a positive, rising trend, ranging from 0.50 ◦C to 1.33 ◦C. The most significant deviations from the average UTCI values, both seasonal and annual, were recorded
in 2000, 2007, 2012, 2015, 2017, and 2018.

AB - The goal of the paper is to examine the hypothesis whereby a higher level of diversification
in the structure of activities of a certain settlement indicates a higher level of its economic
development. The absolute predominance of employment in the tertiary-quaternary sector
in the total employment in Serbia’s municipal centres has been brought in correlation
with their level of economic development. The nature of this interdependence has been the
subject of a detailed analysis in this paper. Using the methods elaborated for the needs of
this research, conclusions have been drawn indicating the emergence of a large number of
centres where the quantitative prevalence of the tertiary-quaternary sector, along with the
distinct incidence of employment in public services, is not accompanied by corresponding
qualitative and quantitative changes that would result in a higher level of economic
development. Insufficiently developed centres have been identified in order to facilitate
decision makers to take proper and timely actions and enable relevant institutions and
organisations to apply adequate measures to support balanced economic development.

AB - While it is widely acknowledged that foreign investments in knowledge-intensive business services (KIBS) play an important role in reshaping the economy and spatial structure of many postsocialist cities, there is a lack of research on their intra-urban locational behaviour, particularly in comparison with domestic investments in the same sector. This analysis is focused on the underlying factors that shape both foreign and domestic KIBS firms’ location choices in Belgrade, a city facing dynamic restructuring induced by the complexity of the postsocialist transition. For the modelling KIBS intra-urban location choices, this study uses disaggregated micro-geographic data on firms opened during 2011-2019 period. The findings suggest that domestic and foreign KIBS firms exhibit both similarities and differences in spatial behaviour. Firms from both groups are attracted by economies of localisation and commercial zones, while avoiding the densely populated areas in Belgrade. On the other hand, domestic KIBS firms are attracted by city’s main transportation arteries and the traditional CBD area, while foreign KIBS firms tend to agglomerate in the emerging new business district in New Belgrade, an area with plenty of new high-quality office buildings, high-status residential areas, good intra-urban accessibility and airport proximity. This study indicates that foreign KIBS firms produce a spatially bounded “global city zone” and raises a question about their local embeddedness and role in the development of the local economy.

AB - Most theoretical and empirical research on the subject of urban transport energy consumption has addressed the
role of urban form and urban spatial structure (primarily population density and degree of centralisation), city size
(population and/or area), the level of economic development, transport patterns, and transportation infrastructure.
Our analysis encompasses a wide range of socio-economic, spatial, transport and infrastructure indicators, as well as
energy efficiency and energy consumption indicators in a sample of 35 world cities, covering the period from 1960 to
2005. Comparative analysis indicates there are significant differences regarding the determinants of urban transport
energy consumption, especially between the US and Australian automobile-dependent cities, on the one hand, and
the wealthy Asian metropolises, on the other. Despite some recent positive trends (a decline in automobile vehiclekilometres

and reduction in urban transport energy consumption), a large number of cities in the developed world
still rely predominantly on cars, while sustainable modes of urban transport play an almost negligible role. Due to
trends of urbanization, demographic growth and a rise in living standards, the main focus of attention has shifted to
metropolises in developing countries. In the long run, the urban form itself is particularly significant, not only because
it critically influences transport demand, but also because of its inertness.

imperfections. Negative external effects and other market imperfections have, among other things, a serious consequence - they send the wrong price signals and mask the real costs that arise in the process of energy production and consumption. As a result, there is a serious degradation of the environment at the local and global level. Negative effects at the global level, such as the depletion of non-renewable resources and changes in the global climate, represent the most serious challenges facing humanity today. Public sector responses to market imperfections, in the form of various measures and instruments, are well known in economic theory and have proved effective in practice in many circumstances. However, the fact that giving priority to economic and social goals in public policies can have and often results in deterioration of the quality of the environment is mainly ignored in the professional literature even today. In addition, the failure of energy regulations leads to environmental degradation. The situation is especially critical in many developing countries. In the race to achieve goals in the field of industry, agriculture or energy, there are major environmental problems that lead to environmental unsustainability as collateral damage. From an
economic point of view, both the effectiveness and efficiency of energy policy are important, in terms of its potential to contribute to improvements in the field of environmental protection and energy efficiency. One of the best strategies is to introduce important aspects of the environment into the market sphere. In this way, the limitations of natural resources would be reflected in their prices. Abolishing the practice of large subsidies and underestimation of fossil fuel prices is certainly a step in the right direction.

AB - This study expounds the dynamic relationships among agricultural land-use change, rural population migration, and sediment transport. The variability of suspended sediment load was detected by Mann-Kendall and Pettitt tests. From 1961 to 2007, the annual trend in suspended sediment concentration and sediment load demonstrated significant reduction (alpha = 0.001), with decreasing rates of 0.0144 g/L/y and 84.7 t/y, respectively. An abrupt change-point was detected in 1984 for the sediment load (p = 0.0001). The double-mass curve method and regression analysis of sediment load versus precipitation were used to quantify the effects of climate change and human activities on sediment load variations. The changes in sediment load were predominantly impacted by human activities (89%), while precipitation explained 11% of the reduction in suspended sediment. An important land-use change recorded in the Juzna Morava river basin comprised the abandonment of agricultural lands due to depopulation processes, as well as economic and social changes, which was followed by significant impacts on soil erosion and sediment transport. Land abandonment was most pronounced in marginal mountain or semi-mountainous areas, where agriculture was until recent decades traditional or semi-traditional. The results of the correlation matrix were significant at the p lt 0.05 level, demonstrating that the decrease of rural population, agricultural land, and arable land were directly related to the decline of suspended sediment. High correlation coefficients were found between anthropogenic indicators and sediment parameters, ranging from 0.94 to 0.97.

AB - Urban shrinkage is a process that many European countries have been facing in recent decades. It had started in highly developed regions at the time of deindustrialisation, but since the 1990s, this process has also affected Central, Eastern and South-eastern Europe, with different patterns and dynamics of urban shrinkage. The political and economic crisis in Serbia during the 1990s, as well as the transition from a centrally governed and urban-based industrialisation to a neoliberal market economy, has brought significant changes in the development of cities, which faced declining demographic and economic vitality. This paper is focused on the analysis of the intensity and dynamics of demographic and economic aspects of urban shrinkage in Serbia and on classification of cities according to the different phases of urban shrinkage. Typological classification was performed using the K-means clustering algorithm. The cluster analysis is based on the use of relevant demographic and socio-economic indicators, for the period from 2002 to 2011. After identifying cities that recorded an increase in total population and relatively stable economic development, three types of shrinking cities were determined according to the intensity of demographic and economic shrinkage - cities with low, medium and high shrinkage intensity. The analysis of the main patterns and factors that influenced the different levels of urban shrinkage enabled a better understanding of this phenomenon in Serbia. The results indicate the heterogeneity of urban space due to different levels of demographic and economic shrinkage, thus it can serve as a starting point for future research of uneven urban development in Serbia.

AB - The strategic planning of rural development is focused on both economic growth and sustainable development. Sustainable rural development is essential for conserving and improving resources, while economic growth contributes to a better standard of living. The aim of the research is to determine, using the participatory rural appraisal (PRA) methodology on the example of the village of Zlakusa, the economic activities developed in the village, the importance of rural tourism, and the scope of sustainable development taken into account in rural development. The results of the research show that the success of the rural community depends on: diversification of economic activities, which is accompanied by cohesion of the population through association and organization; organized activities aimed at local or republican authorities; activation of human and social capital; and initiating activities involving marginalized groups. Educating the population outside formal education improves the sustainable and economic development of the village and enables rural tourism to become an important part of economic activities and a channel for the commercialization of natural and cultural contents.

AB - After the dissolution of the Socialist Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SFRY) in the early 1990s, the Republic of Serbia found itself in an unprecedented social, political, and economic situation. Facing a significant delay in the transition process in comparison with other Central and Eastern European (CEE) states, Serbian governments since 2001 have opted for a model of economic development based on attracting foreign direct investment (FDI). This strategic commitment has led to complex and controversial effects on Serbia’s economy. On the one hand, FDI inflows benefited the local economy by increasing its international market competitiveness, contributing to a decrease in unemployment, and enhancing technology transfer. On the other hand, FDI is related to some negative economic trends such as expansion of labor-intensive jobs and an increasing dependency on unpredictable inflows of foreign capital. The aim of this chapter is to offer insights into the empirical literature on FDI to Serbia in the context of Serbia’s historical development and to explore the spatiality and influences of contemporary inflows with a special focus on prospects and suggestions for Serbia’s economic trajectory over the next 25 years. Conceptually, this text is based on Dunning’s eclectic approach to FDI by focusing upon the origins, location, and internalization of foreign capital in the country.

urbanističkog, ekonomskog, demografskog, ekološkog, politikološkog i drugih aspekata.
Urbanu mrežu Republike Srpske (Bosna i Hercegovina), s obzirom na društveno-istorijski razvoj
i istorijsko-genetski (dis)kontinuitet kao i složenost fizičko-geografske osnove, zatim nejednak
nivo ekonomskog razvoja, rascepkanost teritorije itd, karakterišu funkcionalno neusaglašeni i
hijerarhijski nekompatibilni urbani sistemi. Prostorno i populaciono najveći gradovi, koji čine,
uslovno rečeno, kostur urbanog sistema Republike Srpske, locirani su duž transferzalnih i
longitudinalnih razvojnih osovina u dolinama velikih reka (Vrbas, Sava, Sana, Drina i Bosna).
U radu su istaknuti i analizirani problemi neravnomernog prostorno-demografskog razmeštaja
urbanih centara u Republici Srpskoj (BiH), kao i osnovne odlike procesa urbanizacije.

AB - Do sredine XXI veka gotovo dve trećine ukupnog svetskog stanovništva će živeti u gradovima. Кljučnu ulogu u postizanju ovih ciljeva ima urbano planiranje.
AB - It is estimated that by the middle of this century, nearly two-thirds of the world’s population will live in cities. These processes of accelerated urbanization carry considerable social and environmental problems, especially evident in developing countries. Some estimates suggest that cities account for as much as 80% of worldwide energy consumption (OECD, 2010; UN-Habitat, 2018). This corresponds to the enormous CO2 emission (approximately 70%) arising mainly from the transport and residential sectors (OECD, 2010). Due to the extremely high transaction costs, the reduction of negative transport environmental effects has proved to be very complicated, compared to stationary sources of pollution (industry and buildings). In terms of sustainable urban development, the urban form of cities plays a major role, primarily because of the strong interdependence that exists between it and urban transport. Cities characterized by high population densities, spatial compactness, mixed urban land use and, ultimately, favoring the concept of accessibility are significantly more energy efficient and thus contribute less to changing global climate. Therefore, the orientation to sustainable urban development is largely based on the revise of the built-up area and transport patterns, as well as on the true understanding of their complex interdependence. Urban planning plays a key role in achieving these goals.

AB - Protection and promotion of geoheritage has been changing and improving in recent decades, in line with the growing research in this field. Some research papers specifically study geomorphological geoheritage and introduce a special term - geomorphosite. Karst geomorphosites present specific objects of geomorphological heritage. On Kucaj and Beljanica mountains there is the largest karst area in Serbia. The purpose of this paper is to select and evaluate the scientific value of karst geomorphosites of Kucaj and Beljanica. More than one hundred karst geomorphosites were analyzed. In order to achieve more adequate coverage and representation, they were grouped into 25 geomorphotypes in three major geomorphological components of the investigated area. The results of this analysis highlighted the most important natural potentials of this area for establishing a karst-based geopark. More than 20 geomorphotypes have a positive recommendation index, which provides a good basis for further geotourism analysis.
