Navedeni procesi su svoj prostorni, demografski i privredni izraz imali u dubokim strukturnim problemima i ubrzanom propadanju ruralnih prostora, posebno onih lociranih u planinskim, perifernim i pograničnima oblastima.

AB - Urban shrinkage is a process that many European countries have been facing in recent decades. It had started in highly developed regions at the time of deindustrialisation, but since the 1990s, this process has also affected Central, Eastern and South-eastern Europe, with different patterns and dynamics of urban shrinkage. The political and economic crisis in Serbia during the 1990s, as well as the transition from a centrally governed and urban-based industrialisation to a neoliberal market economy, has brought significant changes in the development of cities, which faced declining demographic and economic vitality. This paper is focused on the analysis of the intensity and dynamics of demographic and economic aspects of urban shrinkage in Serbia and on classification of cities according to the different phases of urban shrinkage. Typological classification was performed using the K-means clustering algorithm. The cluster analysis is based on the use of relevant demographic and socio-economic indicators, for the period from 2002 to 2011. After identifying cities that recorded an increase in total population and relatively stable economic development, three types of shrinking cities were determined according to the intensity of demographic and economic shrinkage - cities with low, medium and high shrinkage intensity. The analysis of the main patterns and factors that influenced the different levels of urban shrinkage enabled a better understanding of this phenomenon in Serbia. The results indicate the heterogeneity of urban space due to different levels of demographic and economic shrinkage, thus it can serve as a starting point for future research of uneven urban development in Serbia.

AB - The paper analyzes the specificities of Serbia's response to coronavirus. Two most important issues during the pandemic were the role of the State and the management of migration flows. Being placed in the China-Russia-EU triangle shaped the response on the crises but also the image of the country in the world. Two phenomena shaped mobility patterns. Citizens returning from abroad were caught between accusations of spreading the virus and a plea for healthcare and other key workers from the Serbian diaspora to help in Serbia. The issue of refugees and migrants attracted significant amounts of positive public attention, but in parallel with that xenophobia arose as a new attitude as part of aggressive campaigns against them.

AB - Abstract: The urbanization and globalization phenomenon’s are the most dynamic processes of the modern world. As inevitable, pervasive and irreversible processes, they have a broad and important impact on every day’s life of the societies. Subsequently, the effects of urbanization and globalization on the transformation of existing and the emergence of new touristic objectives in cities have become the topic of scientific debates in recent period. Given that the issue of urban tourism has become relevant during the last three decades, the impact of these processes on the transformation of existing and the emergence of new tourist objectives in urban areas is an unavoidable field of scientific interest. The crucial differences between tourist cities in highly developed and developing countries, as well as between large cities and small towns, further complicates the perception of the complex impacts of urbanization and globalization processes on the phenomenon of urban tourism. These specifics are the main aspects of the development of urban tourism that will be discussed in this paper.

AB - This research analyses the changes of hotel geography in Belgrade, from the middle nineteenth century to the present. It confirms the influence that major political and economic factors have on hotel distribution, size, ownership, and rank. Prominent Ashworth and Tunbridge's Tourist-historic city model is used as the foundation of hotel spatial analysis in Belgrade, which is historically divided into three periods. The statehood development period is characterized by highly centralized hotel locations, mostly dependent on ethnical divisions, trade and early transport development. During the socialist period, in the absence of a market economy and private property, dispersion of hotels was caused almost exclusively by centralized political decisions. The transition period started with a complete political and economic overhaul of Serbia and Belgrade in the 1990s. After this difficult time, the Belgrade hotel industry started to recover, with the geographical factors that represented a re-establishment of market mechanisms and entrepreneur initiatives, as well as a focus on both the historic city and urban periphery.

After this difficult time, the Belgrade hotel industry started to recover, with the geographical factors that represented a re-establishment of market mechanisms and entrepreneur initiatives, as well as a focus on both the historic city and urban periphery.",

AB - The urbanization and globalization phenomenon's are the most dynamic processes of the modern world. As inevitable, pervasive and irreversible processes, they have a broad and important impact on every day's life of societies. The crucial differences between tourist cities in highly developed and developing countries, as well as between large cities and small towns, further complicate the perception of the complex impacts of urbanization and globalization processes on the phenomenon of urban tourism. These specifics are the main aspects of the development of urban tourism that will be discussed in this paper.

AB - Urban shrinkage has been common phenomena for many European cities over the last decades. This process, accompanied by rapid demographic and socioeconomic changes, affected large areas in post-socialist countries forming a new “pole of shrinkage". Although shrinkage processes produced rather homogeneous urban transformation In CEE from the macro perspective, it seems to be both spatially and temporally uneven from micro perspective, causing different development tra- jectories among post-socialist cities and uneven regional development. The transi- tion from a centrally governed and urban-based industrialization to a neoliberal market economy and new multiparty democratic system, together with the collapse of socialist Yugoslavia, civil wars, and political and economic crumple during the 1990s, has brought significant changes to the structures of Serbian cities. Urban areas in Central Serbia and Vojvodina, with 167 urban settlements according to of- ficial (administrative) criteria, and 59.4% of total population, are facing population loss, which is closely related to the out-migration and population aging. This paper focuses on different development dynamics that have produced heterogeneous de- velopment patterns of urban space in Serbia. Diverse categories of the clties have been represented, from the most developed urban centres to the small towns, which are in the stage of depopulation and economic decline. The main goal of this research is to undt'rstand the pace and scale of shrinkage process, together with its causes and consequences, and to determine different types of shrinking cities in Serbia. This should act as a starting point for future development strategies that will have to recognize the heterogeneity caused by different level of shrinkage and diverse development opportunities for the urban settlements in Serbia.

AB - In many Eastern European countries, the standard of living increased as a result of the process of industrialization in the second half of the 20th Century. Consequently, the population in rural areas with small-scale farming decreased due to the availability of employment elsewhere. This directly impacted soil erosion (and thereby sustainability of the land), but the degree and direction are not well known. This study investigates two municipalities within Serbia, their change in population and its impact on land use changes and soil erosion. The standard of living increased after the industrialization process in the 1960s within these municipalities. The erosion potential model is used to calculate gross annual erosion. The changes related to population and arable land in rural settlements are analyzed according to proportional spatial changes. The results show an overall decrease of erosion intensity in the study area. In addition, two basic findings are derived: first, the highest level of human impact on soil is in rural settlements at the lowest elevation zones, where erosion intensity shows the least amount of decrease; and, second, the most intensive depopulation process, recorded in higher elevation zones, indicates a rapid decrease of erosion intensity.

Anthropogeographical concept of Jovan Cvijić and contemporary scientific propositions in the study of rural settlements

AB - At the beginning of the 20th century, along with the scientific foundation of anthropogeography, Jovan Cvijić developed an authentic anthropogeographical concept in the study of the settlements. The synthesis of anthropogeographic knowledge of rural settlements and the setting of complex theoretical and methodological tasks in this field gave innovative results that represent a significant heritage of Serbian anthropogeography. In this paper, the authors consider some questions that many scientists did, analyzing scientific actuality of Cvijić's concept in the research of rural settlements - the importance of the traditional anthropogeographical concept in the contemporary studies of rural settlements and applicability of a wide spectrum of methodological principles of the Serbian anthropogeographical school (the method of direct observation in the field, genetic, geographic-comparative, typological method, the method of ethno-psychical profiles etc.). The analysis of the authenticity and integrity of Cvijić's theoretical and methodological principles in the anthropogeographical studies of rural settlements in the Balkan Peninsula confirms the validity of concept, methodology and indicators that were used, as well as the scientific actuality and quality of the traditional anthropogeographical concept. By introducing modern qualitative and quantitative methods, while some of the new ones are not fundamentally different from traditional ones (for example methods of factor and cluster analysis, on the one hand, and the typological and space analysis method, on the other), the traditional anthropogeographical concept has not lost its scientific importance, and great attention from different positions should be dedicated to modern research of rural settlements and rural areas.

AB - Until the mid-20th century, the rural areas had a population of more than three-quarters of the total population of Serbia, which mainly based its existence on agriculture. Subsequent processes of industrialization and urbanization, combined with a declining agricultural sector, have resulted in marginalization, devaluation and devastation of the rural areas. Since the 1960’s, Socialist Yugoslavia has accepted the strategy of rapid, centrally governed industrialization, which strongly hanged the image of rural areas. With rural areas left out of focus in the socialist development trajectory, millions of inhabitants were moved from villages to towns and cities, causing massive depopulation. Focusing socioeconomic development on the urban-based industrialization and the employment of unskilled and semiskilled labour from the villages, rural areas have suffered intensive emigration as well as demographic and socio-economic shrinkage. Consequently, rural shrinkage has become one of the largest structural development problems of Serbian society.

AB - In this paper the relationship between populatiOn and the environment, and their influence on rural sustainability in Serbia, using quantitative typology of rural areas will be examined. The typology is based on the net relative change of population in rural areas in Serbia, according to the difference between the number of inhabitants at the end of the studied period (2011) and a hypothetical population that each rural settlement would have if the population in base year (1961) was changed proportionally to the change of total rural population. Research results indicate types of population dynamics of rural areas with different scale and intensity of environmental degradation: progressive type with favorable human and economic potentials, strong urban influence and huge environmental transformation; stagnant type with advanced agricultural and demographic dimension which imposed pressures to the natural environment; regressive type with heterogeneous demographic, social and economic features, and different impacts on natural and social environment, and dominant regressive type of rural areas highly characterised by the deficient in human and economic potential and preserved natural resources. Based on analysed rural particularities it can be concluded that the different human, environmental and economic potentials and obstacles of determined types of rural areas should be the starting point in defining appropriate sustainable strategies and development directions.

AB - In this paper the relationship between demographic and land use changes and their impact on the intensity of erosion processes in the Nisava River basin is examined by using quantitative typology. For the purposes of quantifying the erosion intensity changes, the erosion potential model (EPM) was used to calculate the annual gross erosion and spatial distribution of soil erosion in study area. The value of the erosion coefficient was reduced from Z(1) = 0.443 in 1971 to Z(2) = 0.356 in 2011. Specific annual gross erosion in the Nisava River basin was 765.3 m(3)/km(2)/year in 1971 while in 2011 it was 533.3 m(3)/km(2)/year. Therefore, due to changes in intensity of erosion processes the specific annual gross erosion in study area was decreased for 232.3 m(3)/km(2)/year. In 40-year period, there were no significant changes in natural conditions, so the anthropogenic influences were responsible for the reduced erosion intensity. Research results indicate three types of population and land use changes with different scale and intensity of erosion process: progressive type with favourable demographic potentials, huge land use transformation and intensive process of soil erosion; stagnant type with advanced agricultural and demographic dimension which imposed pressures to the environment and soil erosion; regressive type and dominant regressive sub-type with depopulation and deagrarization have significant decereasing effect on soil erosion. These results are basis for all integral soil and water management projects, forest ecosystems and environmental protection, spatial planning, agriculture and other human activities.

AB - This article examines the effectiveness of quantitative approach in establishing the typology of rural areas in Serbia. For this purpose, from the spectrum of multivariate statistical methods available, we employed the principal component analysis to highlight multidimensional nature of heterogeneity of the vast rural space in Serbia. The effort to encompass multidimensionality of rurality is made by engaging numerous demographic, economic, agricultural, and infrastructure indicators in the analysis. The results of this research indicate regions with different developing trajectories: Southwest Serbia with predominant demographic dimension; Northern part of Serbia with stressed agricultural orientation and potential; dispersed economically propulsive regions mainly located in the areas adjacent to major transport infrastructure; and regions with overrepresented urban structures where sprawl of urban influence is obvious in most rural municipalities near larger cities. The resulting principal components could be the starting point in defining appropriate planning strategies and developing directions based on the analyzed rural particularities.

AB - This paper presents one view of the author on the issues which were treated by many scientists, by taking into account the scientific relevance of Cvijić's concept of the study of settlements - to what an extent the traditional anthropogeographic concept has been preserved in the contemporary study of settlements (both rural and urban) and whether the elements of systematic approach, which are present in the research- methodological method by Cvijić, are 'applicable' in the contemporary Serbian geography? The abundant scientific work of Vojislav Radovanović, in the year when 120th anniversary of his birth is marked, provides the relevant insight in the study of the above issues. Setting aside the strictly scientific researches of them, the problems regarding the settlements (mainly the rural ones), which he treated in his numerous scientific works, undoubtedly point to the application of the traditional anthropogeographic theoretically-methodological prepositions, which can be associated with the contemporary anthropogeographic synthesis. The systematic principle applied to the anthropogeographic process of the development of settlements (the process of genesis, evolution and transformation of settlement anthropogeographic system) can be clearly and argumentatively recognised in his research method of the study of settlements (for instance, book 'General Anthropogeography', study 'Tikveš and Rajec', etc.). In this paper, which presents the view on the scientific achievements of Vojislav Radovanović, but also a sort of 'confirmation' of the scientific relevance of them, the validity of the concept , methods and indicators, which were used in the research of the settlement anthropogeographic complex were analysed (and confirmed), as well as the 'sustainability' of the classical anthopogeographic concept, which, along with the introduction of a wide range of qualitative and quantitative methods of contemporary geography, in which some of the new methods are not substantially different from the traditional ones (for instance, the methods of the factor and cluster analysis, on the one hand, and methods of the spatial analysis, as well as the systematisation , classification and typology, on the other hand) has not lost the scientific relevance, so, from the different points of view, having in mind the contemporary research priorities of the social geography, the due attention should be paid to him.

AB - Informal housing in Southeast Europe is not a new phenomenon by any means. The problem of informal settlements in Belgrade [Beograd] and the rest of post-Yugoslavia goes back to the 1960s, when growing Yugoslav cities suffered a massive housing shortage. Housing policies tolerated private, individual, and often informal construction activities of rural-urban migrants and low-medium income households. These activities continued and intensified during the late Socialist and early transitional periods. According to the 2002 masterplan of Belgrade, informal settlements covered more than 40% of the total residential area. As a result of these long-term, intensive informal developments, this paper concludes that its case study, Kaluderica and the surrounding area, has grown to become one of the biggest informal settlements on the Balkans. This paper analyses these developments with the path-dependency approach. Sub-urbanisation of this kind is characterised by a high degree of informality and social marginality and differs greatly from both the well-known Western pattern, as well as the East-European pattern. Referring to the long-term development, informality is interpreted as a multiple (post-)Communist routine.

AB - The channel morphology of the Kolubara river was changed during the last century, mostly because of the lignite exploitation. In the research area, bank erosion is widespread and causes processes of soil loss and land use changes. This is an agricultural area and people used to farm their land parcels at the river banks. In the area of the three villages, which are situated on the Kolubara River banks, there are 208 land parcels at risk from the bank erosion. The changes in the area with endangered land parcels were analyzed using the cadastral maps from 1967 and aerial photographs from 2004. On the research sector, the Kolubara river length was 7.7 km in 1967 and 10.36 km in 2004. The research shows that 60.37 ha was lost and degraded by the bank erosion. The loss of land comprises 49.43% of the land parcels from 1967. The aim of this paper is to analyze the influence of the bank erosion rate on the changes of the Kolubara river course, soil loss and land use. The results of this research are important for the water and land management, as well as for the protection of intensive bank erosion.

AB - In this paper we present an analysis of the impact of an intensive process of building rest and recreation houses and the establishment of settlements in the Sićevačka gorge, Serbia, from the 1960s to the beginning of the 20th, century. The analysis is based on field research conducted in 2001/2002nd, as well as official statistical data. In this paper, settlements are defined by their spatial distribution, characteristics of the local position within the existing territory (Atari), and basic trends in development and advanced geospatial changes. Special attention is devoted to the consideration of how the density of temporary settlements (weekend) has impacted the permanent (continuous) population as well as the territorial and population development of existing rural settlements. .
AB - U ovom radu sagledan je uticaj intenzivnog procesa izgradnje kuća za odmor i rekreaciju i formiranje 15 vikend naselja na naseobinsku transformaciju Sićevačke klisure od 60-ih godina 20. veka. Detaljna analiza formiranja današnjih vikend naselja rezultat je prvenstveno terenskih istraživanja tokom 2001/2002. godine, kao i korišćenja zvaničnih statističkih podataka vezanih za ovu problematiku. Ovom prilikom definisan je njihov prostorni razmeštaj, karakteristike lokalnog položaja u okviru postojećih naseobinskih teritorija (atara), kao i postanak, osnovne tendencije razvoja i savremene geoprostorne promene. Posebna pažnja posvećena je sagledavanju dinamike procesa transformacije privremene (vikend) naseljenosti u trajnu (kontinuiranu) naseljenost i njegovom uticaju na teritorijalni i populacioni razvoj postojećih seoskih naselja. .

Ovom prilikom definisan je njihov prostorni razmeštaj, karakteristike lokalnog položaja u okviru postojećih naseobinskih teritorija (atara), kao i postanak, osnovne tendencije razvoja i savremene geoprostorne promene. Posebna pažnja posvećena je sagledavanju dinamike procesa transformacije privremene (vikend) naseljenosti u trajnu (kontinuiranu) naseljenost i njegovom uticaju na teritorijalni i populacioni razvoj postojećih seoskih naselja. .",

AB - Lužnica is situated in southeaster Serbia and is consists of 52 settlements. In this paper are emphasized four main stages in evolution of Lužnica: initial (from the old ages until the period of Turkish rule), early stage (period of Turkish rule), central stage (from the liberation to the end of The Second World war), and modern stage that lasts for more than 50 years. The specific demographic development from the year of 1879. until modern days is denoted with changes in natural increase and migration. That is caused by the influences of the environmental factors, and also social-historic, economic, socio-psychological and other factors. Since the 60-s this territory is the good example of the area with high altitude and negative appearances in demographic development (depopulation and intensive emigration).

AB - Development of village Gabrovnica from the prehistorically time to modern days is characterized by a number of geographic, historical, spatial demographic, social and economic changes. In this paper are emphasized four main stages in its evolution: initial (from the foundation to the Turkish conquests), early stage (period of Turkish rule), central stage (from the liberation to the end of The Second world war), and modern stage that lasts for more than 50 years. Geographic, historical and antropogeographic factors were in flavour to evolution of Gabrovnica in antic and medieval period when the village was mentioned for the first time in written documents. After the liberation from the long Turkish rule, the development was significant and rapid. In the modern stage, especially after 1960s, stagnation and negative development tendencies occurred. Today Gabrovnica is village with only 5 citizens and with serious treat to be abandoned. This is also a current problem in settlements and its spatial and demographic development in Serbia. Complete depopulation of Gabrovnica is undoubtedly in nearby future.

AB - Adequate uses of indicators of transport accessibility, as quantitative measures, allow us to move spatial interactions analysis from theoretical to practical level. Aggregate indicators of transport accessibility of places dominate in the research studies, although the indicators of individual accessibility are taking considerable place in the last few decades. The most types of indicators of transport accessibility of places are presented in this article, as well as their characteristics, possibilities for application, advantages and weaknesses.
Najširu primenu imaju agregatni indikatori saobraćajne dostupnosti mesta, mada poslednjih decenija značajnu poziciju zauzimaju i indikatori individualne dostupnosti. U radu je prikazana većina tipova indikatora saobraćajne dostupnosti mesta, uz kratku analizu njihovih karakteristika, mogućnosti primene, glavnih prednosti i nedostataka.
