AB - Climate change has led to concerns about increasing river floods resulting from the greater water-holding capacity of a warmer atmosphere(1). These concerns are reinforced by evidence of increasing economic losses associated with flooding in many parts of the world, including Europe(2). Any changes in river floods would have lasting implications for the design of flood protection measures and flood risk zoning. However, existing studies have been unable to identify a consistent continental-scale climatic-change signal in flood discharge observations in Europe(3), because of the limited spatial coverage and number of hydrometric stations. Here we demonstrate clear regional patterns of both increases and decreases in observed river flood discharges in the past five decades in Europe, which are manifestations of a changing climate. Our results-arising from the most complete database of European flooding so far-suggest that: increasing autumn and winter rainfall has resulted in increasing floods in northwestern Europe; decreasing precipitation and increasing evaporation have led to decreasing floods in medium and large catchments in southern Europe; and decreasing snow cover and snowmelt, resulting from warmer temperatures, have led to decreasing floods in eastern Europe. Regional flood discharge trends in Europe range from an increase of about 11 per cent per decade to a decrease of 23 per cent. Notwithstanding the spatial and temporal heterogeneity of the observational record, the flood changes identified here are broadly consistent with climate model projections for the next century(4,5), suggesting that climate-driven changes are already happening and supporting calls for the consideration of climate change in flood risk management.

AB - Despite the fact that the torrential floods and forest fires in this century caused enormous damage to Serbia, there are no cadasters of torrential streams for most parts of the country, and there was no forest fires susceptibility zonation, whose indirect consequences include the intensification of torrential flooding. Therefore, it is necessary to approach solving these problems at a higher level, taking into account the synergistic effects of these disasters. In the catchment area of the Josanicka river, not only in this century, floods and forest fires have represented a very significant factors of the environmental change. For taking appropriate measures and reducing the possible consequences of these disasters in the near future, it is necessary to determine the most vulnerable areas, using various susceptibility indexes, GIS and remote sensing, but also to show how eventual occurrence of forest fires in such areas would result in increased flash flood vulnerability. Part of the Josanicka river basin is situated in National Park "Kopaonik", and the Josanicka spa, which could be, by its characteristics, one of the leaders of spa tourism in Serbia, is located in that basin, which further increases the need for protection of this territory from these hazards.

AB - The fluvial process is characterized by an intense meandering riverbed. The aim of this study was to perform a reconstruction of the lateral migration of a 15 km length of an active meandering river during the period 1930-2016. River morphological changes were analyzed and quantified from cadastral maps and aerial photographs as well as by geodetic survey and GIS. Hydrological characteristics and extreme hydrological events were evaluated in relation to bank erosion rate. The rate of bank erosion was markedly different from the long-term studied meanders, just like in the short-term period. During the 87 years of observation (from 1930 to 2016), the length of the Kolubara River was enlarged by 3.44 km. The average migration rate of the Kolubara River for monitored meanders in the period 1930-2010 was 1.9 myear(-1), while in the period 2010-2016, the average migration rate was 3.3 myear(-1). The rate of bank erosion was more intensive across the entire short-term period than during the longer period, and the maximum annual rate of bank erosion during the period 2010-2016 varied between 0.3 and 11.5 m. It is very likely that in the period from 2010, frequent discharge variations and rapid change of its extreme values caused more intensive bank erosion. These research results will be valuable for river channel management, engineering (soft and hard engineering), and planning purposes (predicting changes in river channel form) in the Kolubara River Basin.

AB - Anthropogenic influences on the hydrological network in the lower part of the Kolubara River have been notably intensive since 1959, when huge river regulation works were constructed to open new mining fields for lignite exploitation. From that moment, the Kolubara River flowed through the Pestan's riverbed (its right tributary), and the bank erosion became stronger, resulting in the lateral migration of the river course on one hand and land loss, land use changes, and economic consequences on the other hand. The economic effects caused by bank erosion were analysed both via the loss of land and the reduction in the volume of agricultural production. In the period 1967-2010, bank erosion caused a land loss of 67.3 ha, including 39.6 ha of arable land. The total value of the land loss by 2010 was 80,560 USD, and the total loss in agricultural production was 634,240 USD (1982=100). The second aim of this study was to investigate the costs and benefits of bank protection using the method of bank revetment construction at the moment bank erosion became more intense and during the latest phases. The results of this research suggest that any delay in the investment in Kolubara River bank protection could be adverse. If the bank revetment along the endangered river banks was built in 1967, all investments would have been recovered through income from agricultural production and selling the lost land by 2010. The results should provide information for river engineering, environmental planners and policy makers who must deal with decisions regarding planning and the protection of bank erosion.

AB - Periodicity of temperature on three stations in the Nisava River valley in period 1949-2014, has been analyzed by means of Fourier and wavelet transforms. Combined periodogram based on fast Fourier transform shows considerable similarity among individual series and identffies significant periods on 2.2, 2.7, 3.3, 5, 6-7, and 8.2 years in all datasets. Wavelet coherence analysis connects strongest 6-7 years spectral component to Mediterranean oscillation, starting in 1980s. Combined periodogram of Mediterranean oscillation index reveals 6-7 years spectral component as a dominant mode in period 1949-2014. Wavelet power spectra and partial combined periodograms show absence of 6-7 years component before 1975, after which this component becomes dominant in the spectrum. Consistency between alternation in temperature trend in the Nisava River valley and change in periodicity of Mediterranean oscillation was found.

AB - A warming climate is expected to have an impact on the magnitude and timing of river floods; however, no consistent large-scale climate change signal in observed flood magnitudes has been identified so far. We analyzed the timing of river floods in Europe over the past five decades, using a pan-European database from 4262 observational hydrometric stations, and found clear patterns of change in flood timing. Warmer temperatures have led to earlier spring snowmelt floods throughout northeastern Europe; delayed winter storms associated with polar warming have led to later winter floods around the North Sea and some sectors of the Mediterranean coast; and earlier soil moisture maxima have led to earlier winter floods in western Europe. Our results highlight the existence of a clear climate signal in flood observations at the continental scale.

AB - More intense rainfall may cause a range of negative impacts upon society and the environment. In this study we analysed trends in extreme ETCCDI (Expert Team on Climate Change Detection and Indices) rainfall indices in Montenegro for the period between 1951 and 2010. Montenegro has been poorly studied in terms of rainfall extremes, yet it contains the wettest Mediterranean region known as Krivosije. Several indices of precipitation extremes were assessed including the number of dry days and rainfall totals in order to identify trends and possible changes. A spatial pattern relationship between extreme rainfall indices and the North Atlantic Oscillation has also been examined. The results generally suggest that the number of days with precipitation decreased while rainfall intensity increased, particularly in south-western parts of the country. A slight tendency towards intense rainfall events is suggested. The examined rainfall indices and North Atlantic Oscillation over Montenegro seemed to be directly linked to changes in one of the major large-scale circulation modes such as the NAO pattern that is particularly evident during the winter season.

AB - The aim of this paper is to show the real impact of vegetation types on runoff, expressed by a mathematical model. Better understanding of this relationship may significantly contribute to the prevention of extreme natural processes that are more and more frequent in the world in recent years. Particular attention to this problem has been paid after the historic flooding that occurred in Serbia in May 2014, taking away many lives, property and starting up numerous erosive processes. In this work multiple linear regression was used to make an estimation of the mean annual, maximum and minimum river runoff in Serbia for the period of 1998-2009. The sample analyzed consisted of 40 small river basins with natural runoff and the independent variables used were mean annual precipitation, mean annual air temperature, basin altitude, the humidity index, basin area, average basin slope, and vegetation factors separated in 8 categories. It was shown that vegetation has an important role in runoff regulation and that it is justified to classify it particularly into three categories: forests, meadows and agriculture. A total of 33 models were formed with R-2 > 0.8 and runoff changes from 0.1% to 1% within 1% changes to vegetation, depending on type.

AB - Riverine and torrential floods are the most significant natural hazards on the territory of Serbia. The potentially flooded area in Serbia with a 100-year return period is 15,198.07 km2 (17.2% of total area). Serbia is mostly threatened by the floods of small to medium-size torrential rivers mostly in late spring (from May to the end of June), a period characterised by intensive rainfalls of a few-hour duration. In the Pcinja River Basin, the town of Trgoviste was struck by a flood in May 2010. Two people were killed, almost 170 ha of land and 27 buildings were flooded (including 12 severely damaged), roads damaged or blocked, and 230 inhabitants evacuated. The flood in the Kolubara River Basin of late June 2010 affected 500 ha with 230 flooded households. Total damage was estimated at €370,000. In the watersheds studied, the 2010 floods were natural occurrences, but human action significantly aggravated the disasters. The messages to be learned help improve the system of prevention and the organisation of mitigation of flood damages, in order to reduce it to an acceptable level.

AB - This paper analyzes climate change and its impact on river discharge. This issue is very well studied worldwide, but in Serbia so far has been poorly studied. The first part of the paper presents the views of two different opinions, those who favored anthropogenic impact on the increasing greenhouse effect, and those who say that this is due to natural factors. Most attention is paid to changes in temperature and precipitation patterns. Classification by the group of those who favor the promotion of natural phenomena is demonstrated through the analysis of river flow fluctuations in the hydrological gauge Beli brod located on Kolubara River.

AB - Protection of hydrological heritage sites, water protection segment, is an integral part of nature conservation. Today it is the basic theme of the hydrological heritage, the new field of hydrology and geo-heritage, which, by exploring and evaluating hydrological diversity of a particular area and identifying representative water phenomena, sets their preservation and protection as one of the utmost objectives. Two main problems in the protection of water phenomena in Serbia are: inadequate attitude of the individual and society, as a result of poor knowledge of the characteristics and values of waters, and the ever-present need for men to use them (as resources). Lack of understanding, in the professional sphere, the value and importance of water phenomena in the natural system - as a result of a firmly based biocentrism in nature conservation, lack of hydrologic group within the geo-heritage and a small number of interested professionals are some of the associated problems that limit the activities in this field. Specific problems - from the lack of organized and synchronized scientific research to the lack of a database on the hydrological heritage sites, are somewhat common to other segments of the nature conservation of Serbia. There are three possible directions of the future actions on the protection of hydrological heritage sites of Serbia: complete protection, protection with utilization for the needs of tourism and protection with utilization for the needs of water management. The most complex task of hydrological heritage will just be to combine the preservation and protection with tourism and water management, because it is diverse and often conflicting industries about. A possible solution to this problem is illustrated through the idea of water reserves.

AB - The territory of Serbia is vulnerable to various types of natural hazards and the risk is not equal across the entire territory, it varies depending on the type of hazard and the expected potential for damage. The first aim of this research was to determine the geographical distributions of the major types of natural hazards. Seismic hazards, landslides, rock falls, floods, torrential floods, excessive erosion, droughts and forest fires are the most significant natural hazards within the territory of Serbia. Areas vulnerable to some of these natural hazards were singled out using analytical maps; their area relative to the total area of Serbia was defined, along with the total surface area that is vulnerable to each type of natural hazard. Upper intensity values for single natural hazards were measured; these values represent the limiting factor for land-use planning at the given level. Based on these analyses, an integral map of the natural hazards of the territory was created using multi-hazard assessment. Hence, a recent state of the natural hazard vulnerabilities of the territory of Serbia was created and then an integral map was made. The integral map showed spatial distribution of the different types of hazards that are considered to be limiting factors for the highest level of land-use planning. The results presented in this article are the first mufti-hazard assessment and the fast version of the integral map of natural hazards distribution in Serbia for land-use planning, which is important both nationally and regionally.

AB - The purpose of this study was to investigate whether and at which level the environmental knowledge, responsibility and behaviour are mutually interrelated. The study included 252 participants from 18 primary and secondary public schools of Belgrade, who, on the basis of certain criteria, can be considered representative for Serbia. A linear dependence was found between environmental knowledge and responsibility, as well as between responsibility and behaviour, whereas it was not present between knowledge and behaviour. Results indicate that formal and informal education in Serbia must be made more effective in upgrading environmental knowledge, personal moral norms and pro-environmental habits among young people.

Results indicate that formal and informal education in Serbia must be made more effective in upgrading environmental knowledge, personal moral norms and pro-environmental habits among young people.",

AB - The channel morphology of the Kolubara river was changed during the last century, mostly because of the lignite exploitation. In the research area, bank erosion is widespread and causes processes of soil loss and land use changes. This is an agricultural area and people used to farm their land parcels at the river banks. In the area of the three villages, which are situated on the Kolubara River banks, there are 208 land parcels at risk from the bank erosion. The changes in the area with endangered land parcels were analyzed using the cadastral maps from 1967 and aerial photographs from 2004. On the research sector, the Kolubara river length was 7.7 km in 1967 and 10.36 km in 2004. The research shows that 60.37 ha was lost and degraded by the bank erosion. The loss of land comprises 49.43% of the land parcels from 1967. The aim of this paper is to analyze the influence of the bank erosion rate on the changes of the Kolubara river course, soil loss and land use. The results of this research are important for the water and land management, as well as for the protection of intensive bank erosion.

AB - Torrential floods represent the most frequent phenomenon within the category of 'natural risks' in Serbia. The representative examples are the torrential floods on the experimental watersheds of the rivers Manastirica (June 1996) and Kamišna (May 2007). Hystorical maximal discharges (Qmaxh) were reconstructed by use of 'hydraulics flood traces' method. Computations of maximal discharges (Qmaxc), under hydrological conditions after the restoration of the watersheds, were performed by use of a synthetic unit hydrograph theory and Soil Conservation Service methodology. Area sediment yields and intensity of erosion processes were estimated on the basis of the 'Erosion Potential Method'. The actual state of erosion processes is represented by the coefficients of erosion Z=0.475 (Manastirica) and Z=0.470 (Kamišna). Restoration works have been planned with a view to decreasing yields of erosive material, increasing water infiltration capacity and reducing flood runoff. The planned state of erosion processes is represented by the coefficients of erosion Z=0.343 (Manastirica) and Z=0.385 (Kamišna). The effects of hydrological changes were estimated by the comparison of historical maximal discharges and computed maximal discharges (under the conditions after the planned restoration). The realisation of restoration works will help decrease annual yields of erosive material from Wa=24357 m3 to Wa=16198.0 m3 (Manastirica) and from Wa=19974 m3 to Wa=14434 m3 (Kamišna). The values of historical maximal discharges (QmaxhMan=154.9 m3·s-1; QmaxhKam=76.3 m3·s-1) were significantly decreased after the restoration (QmaxcMan=84.5 m3 ·s-1; QmaxcKam=43.7 m3·s-1), indicating the improvement of hydrological conditions, as a direct consequence of erosion and torrent control works. Integrated management involves biotechnical works on the watershed, technical works on the hydrographic network within a precisely defined administrative and spatial framework in order to achieve maximum security for people and their property and to meet other requirements such as: environmental protection, sustainable soil usage, drinking water supply, rural development, biodiversity sustaining, etc. The lowest and the most effective level is attained through PAERs (Plans for announcement of erosive regions) and PPTFs (Plans for protection from torrential floods), with HZs (Hazard zones) and TAs (Threatened areas) mapping on the basis of spatial analysis of important factors in torrential floods formation. Solutions defined through PAERs and PPTFs must be integrated into Spatial Plans at local and regional levels.

AB - Construction or improvement of Serbian ski resorts produced numerous negative effects to surrounding environment, endangering even the functionality of the built objects. Investigation involved the analysis of disturbing activities by phases, and consequential environmental impacts. Clear cuttings, trunk transport, machine grading of slopes, huge excavations, and access road construction, caused the strongest pressure to the environment. Follow up activities during skiing and non skiing periods: skiing, usage of snow groomers, moving of vehicles and tourists, forestry activities and overgrazing. Consequential environmental impacts are clearly noticeable through intensive erosion processes, changes of hydrological conditions and forest fragmentation. The most affected ski runs were surveyed (scale 1:1000), all damages were mapped and classified during the summers of 2007-2010. Development of rills and gullies was measured at experimental plots (100x60 m), integrating survey data into GIS application. Changes of hydrological conditions were estimated on computations of maximal discharges before and after the construction of ski resorts, as well as using, local hydrological records. Forest fragmentation is studied on the basis of detailed survey and field work.

About the high flow regime of the rivers of Kosovo and Metohia

AB - The examples from Kosovo and Metohia attempted to point to some problems in the domain of hydrogeographic regionalization. The river water regime, especially the phase of high flows which marks this regime, has been the topic of almost all researches which treat water resources of drainage basins. However, the thing that has not been achieved till now is the unique solution by which the classification of rivers would be made according to this feature. On this example it has been shown that even some older methods, based on genetic analysis of hydrograms and of global type, as well as some recent ones, with lot of quantitative entry and regional approaches, cannot with certainty answer all the challenges which river regimes bring with themselves. This work shows that apart from climate, orographic and physiognomic features of drainage basins, the periods of data processing and the analysis of individual intra-annual series of discharges are very important as well. Discretization on time periods shorter than one month, as well as elimination of the extreme values of discharges in the longtime series is recommended for the future research.

AB - Climatology is traditionally connected to different conditions of the atmosphere. However, many occurrences appear from time to time. Those occurrences are defined as extreme. Nowadays it is important to study extreme occurrences for every geographical area. In this paper we have investigated one segment of extreme climatic conditions in Eastern part of Serbia - adverse characteristics of precipitation. Data for Negotin were analyzed, as a representative of the climate in this area. Extreme values of precipitation in one place were taken as dangerous occurrences. We have calculated thresholds above which we consider daily amount of precipitation as dangerous. Thresholds for dangerous lengths of rainy and droughty periods were calculated, too.

Thresholds for dangerous lengths of rainy and droughty periods were calculated, too., Klimatologija se tradicionalno vezuje za najčešće pojavljivana stanja atmosfere.

AB - Frequent floods in the area of the municipality of Obrenovac have initiated the establishing, classification and analysis of the starting factors of their genesis in this area. After the dam had been constructed on the right bank of the Sava River (in the 80’s of the 20th century) along the northern border of the municipality of Obrenovac, there were no more floods in this part of the area caused by its overflows. Recent floods have still been caused by a very frequent flooding of the River Kolubara near Poljana, even several times during the year. For that reason the factors of flooding the Kolubara River from its riverbed have been analyzed in this paper. Except the pluviometric and hydrological regime analysis as direct factors of flooding the indirect causes have also been analyzed in details, the most important of which are: the morphological characteristics of terrain, balance of deposits and anthropogenic impacts. Perceiving the causes of flooding, the conditions for analysis of undertaken measures and giving the possible solutions for their prevention have also been realized. The results of this research can be used in making the strategy for solving the existing waterpower problems of this area.

AB - The analysis of demographic factors of the studied area points to the different demographic development models. Uneven economic and regional development of industry caused the regional demographic polarization of the population of Negotin municipality. In relatively short period, the transition has caused spontaneous urbanization and deagrarization. All that influenced the faster tempo of social and demographic processes, especially the migrations towards Negotin, which led to the developmental unevenness and regional polarization to the zone of population concentration (town and the suburban areas). Contrary to the town center, there are depopulation rural areas, with outstanding economic undevelopment.

Not only the terminology, but also the results of previous research are being applied without any reservations. This is only the review of certain appearances that should be overcome and the suggestion what must be taken into consideration in dealing with this important topic in geography.

AB - Negotin Krajina geographically belongs to Mezian tablet that means it is widely open to the influences from the East but main air influences come from the West and North-West causes specific thermal characteristics. Meteorological station "Negotin" is the only one respectable station in the Krajina then we analyze results from various periods since 1901. It is important to emphasize that station "Negotin" doesn't have work continuity since the beginning of the century, thus for analyzing certain climate elements we have had to use method of analogy with station "Zaječar". A part of that, observations were not done by the same methodology so there is lack of some important indicators for this first period. To determine air thermo-regime of Negotin Krajina during 20 century, standard periods (1901-1930., 1931-1960. and 1961-1990) for analyzing climate elements suggested by WMO, were compared. Also, periods from 1925. to 1940. and from 1990. to 2000. were added to this analysis (according to data we had).

The isotherm map of eastern Serbia

AB - In this paper is shown an attempt of creating annual isothermal map of eastern Serbia in conditions where appropriate number of stations is not available, especially on the higher altitudes. According to the natural boundaries are formed 15 regions, with profiles that consist from one lower and one higher station. Because of area dimension it was necessary to use as referent points like some mountain picks for which temperatures were created projections according to the distant profiles. Comparing results of temperature gradients with same results obtained by regression analyses, we can make a conclusion that our method has validity in the sense of more precise prognosis of temperature for the smaller areas.

Comparing results of temperature gradients with same results obtained by regression analyses, we can make a conclusion that our method has validity in the sense of more precise prognosis of temperature for the smaller areas., U radu je izvršen pokušaj kreiranja godišnje izotermne karte istočne Srbije u uslovima kada se ne raspolaže sa dovoljnim brojem stanica, posebno onih na većim visinama.
