AB - Due to its unique geology, relief, and extensive hydrologic network, Mount Rogozna has been chosen as a case study for the quantification of geodiversity. The study consists of two interconnected parts. The first part demonstrates the application of the geodiversity evaluation method using the geodiversity index, whereas the second part deals with the evaluation of the geoheritage objects of the studied area. The methodology for calculating geodiversity index that was applied in this research was modified due to the size of the studied area. The geodiversity index is calculated based on the number of abiotic elements and the roughness of the relief within the studied area. Mount Rogozna, with an area of 818.26 km2, has been studied and processed using a network of spatial polygons of 500 × 500 m and using different maps. The second part of the research deals with the evaluation of geoheritage objects, applying the Geosite Assessment Model. The obtained results demonstrate that geoheritage objects are not always located in places with high values of the geodiversity index. This is proven by the fact that 5 out of 7 geoheritage sites are located in areas with low geodiversity values. The obtained qualitative and quantitative data with maps showing the distribution of geodiversity can serve as a starting point for the development of a planning and management strategy, but also as the example of good practice for possible further application in the quantification of geodiversity in this part of Serbia, and beyond its borders as well.

AB - Geospatial potential for harvesting wind energy is not an easy task to perform in conditions of deficiency of accurate data in remote and large areas (macro to medium locations). There are different methodologies available to identify the most suitable location for the installation of wind power generators. One of the most suitable approaches that employ the Multi-Criteria Analysis method for wind energy potential of the Municipality of Knjazevac (East Serbia) is combining the Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) and Geographic Information Systems. Collection and creation of geospatial data for the research encompassed meteorological data from all available sources, digital elevation model (DEM) to analyze the orography of the terrain, and Landsat 8 satellite data to analyze six land cover (LC) classes. The identification of three best locations for the wind power generators (wind farms) using Multi-Criteria Decision Making (MCDM) analysis solved the major location problem: how to select the best locations for investment in the renewable energy sector and minimize the impact on the environment. The result indicates that only one part of the municipality, at the hub height of 100 m, has enough wind potential to produce energy.

AB - In the last decades. knowledge about the climate has increased significantly. Climate change today is the subject of many sciences, including meteorology, climatology, geology, geography, geophysics, astronomy, etc. The present predictions with updated meteorological data and with data of the number of particles of CO2 in the troposphere may give satisfying results. Forecasting for industrial grains such as maize, soybean, and wheat will be essential for industry and everyday life. Within the last agreement of climate change in Paris, global temperatures will continuously be increasing by 2100. In this research, we used a synthetic grid with agroclimatological data which comprises predictions until 2100. These data were found in the sub-section called World Clim Version 1 or in the CMIP5 database. After numerical and gcospatial GIS analysis, we got the following predictions: (i) slight- no temperature changes or changes including the increase of temperature by 0.5 degrees C, (ii) moderate- temperature increases by 2.0 degrees C, (iii) severe- temperature increases by 5.0 degrees C, and (iv) incredible-temperature increases to extreme values. incase of which the survival of plants will be endangered.

AB - The aim of this study is to determine and highlight the tourism potentials of the Ibar
cultural tourism zone monasteries, which is located in the southwest part of Serbia. In the
assessment of tourism potential, a quantitative model consisting of two groups of indicators
(resource values and state of development) conceived of seven sub-indicators that were
ranked and evaluated by respondents in the field, was applied. The results of the study show
that the total tourist potential of the Ibar cultural tourism zone is 0.756, which classifies it as
an area with high potential. A substantial difference in grading can be noticed by comparing
two groups of indicators. The value of the resource is 0.812, and the value of the development
state is 0.700. The main value of the study is that for the first time, a model based on
quantitative calculations is applied in order to determine the tourist potential of the Ibar
cultural tourism zone monasteries. The study also highlights the advantages and
disadvantages and contributes to better promotion and development of this area.

AB - After the war in 1999, Kosovska Mitrovica located in the north of Kosovo, became a part of the group of politically and ethnically divided cities. The process of division began in June 1999 when Serbs from the parts located south of the Ibar River were forced to flee. In the following years, antagonism between local Albanians and Serbs intensified. Since 2000, the northern part of Kosovska Mitrovica and later the whole municipality has been developing rapidly, becoming an administrative, educational and cultural centre for the Serbian community in Kosovo. In accordance with arrangements of the Brussels Agreement (2013), two municipalities and two settlements emerged: North Mitrovica with Serb majority and South Mitrovica with Albanian majority. The Ibar River is a natural boundary of the two cities. This study deals with the causes and the consequences of the splitting of Kosovska Mitrovica, which has been developing into two separate (parallel) cities since the beginning of the twenty-first century. Spatial divisions of post-war development of the Kosovska Mitrovica’s urban space are discussed in their symbolic, ethno-demographic and institutional dimensions.

AB - In the Kopaonik tourist region of Serbia, there are numerous thermal-mineral (TM) springs with an outlet temperature which ranges from 21 to 78.7 degrees C. The main objective of the study is to determine the capacities, thermal power and energy potential of 19 TM springs in 4 spas of this region. This study supports the hypothesis that in the Kopaonik tourist region, TM springs have considerable capacity, as well as heat power and energy potential. The modern method for determining the energy potential and heat power, based on the flow rate, the inlet and outlet temperatures of the TM springs, was applied in the region with rich geothermal sources, and the obtained results were converted to the fossil fuel energy. The research of the given region, using the above method, is more detailed than the previous research carried out at the national level, so the results are more reliable and suggest that similar research should be carried out at the regional and local level. The estimated total heat energy is 758.51 TJ/year, and heat power (capacity) is 24.1 MWt. The TM springs of this region make up 9.06% of the estimated geothermal energy of Serbia and 7.53% of the estimated heat power. The total energy of this region is equivalent to 210697222.3 kW/h (210.7 GWh) or 18116.7 toe and represent significant energy saving potential. The results indicate the possibility of direct use of energy from TM spring and replacement of fossil fuels, which reduces CO2 emissions and positively affects the quality of the environment. The use of geothermal energy will reduce heating costs and ensure electricity supply due to the growing need for it.

AB - Even though legally protected, many areas worldwide are under a certain level of human pressure. Significant for humanity for many reasons, mountain regions are also threatened because of different anthropogenic activities, especially the ones with developed winter tourism. There are four main ski resorts in Serbia (Kopaonik, Zlatibor, Stara Planina and Brezovica) and the strongest environmental impact is registered on Kopaonik Mountain. In this paper, we tried to answer if winter tourism could be sustainable in protected areas, especially on Kopaonik Mountain, which is recognized as the largest ski resort in Serbia and a natural protected area of the highest state level-a National Park. The main threats to the environment in Kopaonik National Park are logging, building and construction of ski slopes, urbanization, artificial snow use, illegal and unplanned building. Negative consequences of winter tourism development are land degradation, deforestation, loss and fragmentation of natural habitats, ecosystem disturbances, erosion, soil loss and pollution, water and air pollution, noise and light pollution. Harmonizing tourism development with conservation activities within natural protected areas is one of the main priorities of sustainable use of natural values and resources. For the successful and sustainable development of an area, it is necessary to conduct multidisciplinary planning, based on the results from the relevant scientific disciplines.

AB - With the formulation of tourism development strategies for the social and economic development of an area, rural tourism moved to a more complex phase of development. Numerous empirical studies have shown that different forms of rural tourism can have positive and negative effects on the natural and socio-economic context in the area where they are present. There are several methodologies for assessing the development of tourism in rural areas. One of the efficient and commonly used tools in preliminary decision-making phases and a precursor to strategic planning is SWOT analysis, which allows the identification of the best strategy that maximizes strengths and opportunities, and minimizes weaknesses and threats. In this study, a survey was conducted using the method of selecting respondents in order to diagnose the economic, social, cultural and environmental aspects with a focus on strengths and weaknesses in rural settlements in the area of National Park (NP) Kopaonik and its protection zone. Through the SWOT analysis, based on the attitudes of the local population, defined twenty indicators that determine the Sustainable Rural Development Index (SRDI). Research has shown that in area, the influence factor in strengths is higher in relation to the weaknesses, while the influence factor in opportunities is higher than in threats. The final result of the SRDI (0.63), shows that the current development of tourism is within the limits of sustainability and contributes to the sustainable development of rural settlements. The results of the research are the basis for the development of the strategy for future development of tourism in the research area.

AB - Among the numerous factors that trigger landslide events, the anthropogenic impact caused by inadequate planning and faulty land use in urban areas is increasing. The Zemun settlement on the northern outskirts of Belgrade has experienced a number of landslides in the last three decades, endangering buildings and roads, and claiming human lives, particularly in the case of the 2010/2011 landslides. Selected meteorological parameters were used to calculate rainfall erosivity indices such as Precipitation Concentration Index and Modified Fournier Index over the period 1991-2015. Drought indices, Lang aridity index and Palfai Drought Index were calculated as well. Mann-Kendall trend test was applied to identify potential rising and/or declining trends both in meteorological parameters and calculated indices. Trend analysis of the annual and seasonal scales yielded a statistically significant trend in the spring time series. Stable arid and pronounced drought conditions were recorded. The modified Fournier index based on monthly mean values yields moderate aggressiveness, with several extreme values indicating very high erosivity classes, especially for 2010/2011. The geological substrate is predominantly loess and hence highly susceptible to erosion and slope failure when climatological conditions are suitable. Accelerated urbanization at the end of the last century reduced vegetation cover, intensified pressure on the vertical loess slope, and lacked suitable rain drainage systems so that surface-water runoff was directed into the porous loess, thereby endangering slope stability. We proposed a geomorphic model to describe the nature of the erosional processes on the loess cliffs of the Zemun loess plateau. Results from this study have implications for mitigation strategies.

AB - The paper deals with cryoplanation terraces on Kopaonik Mountain (2017m) which had been formed for the first time as a relict relief probably during the last glacial maximum (LGM) of Late Pleistocene. Four sites on the slopes of the southern and eastern exposure of the central part of the mountain range at the altitude between 1390 and 1910 m have been studied. Qualitative geomorphological research has dominated. Quantitative research has not been possible due to the properties of the relict formations and genetic inactivity of this relief, which is also typical for modern periglacial environments. Distinction of cryoplanation terraces on Kopaonik is important for understanding the distribution of this relict morphology both in Serbia and South East Europe. The research presents a contribution to one of the primary goals of the concept of cryoplanation in terms of regional distribution of cryoplanation relief.

AB - With an increase in the awareness of the need to save energy, residents tend to live in dwellings with increasingly tight windows and doors, thus reducing the ventilation rate of indoor air which leads to an increased accumulation of radon indoors. Having in mind that a dose from an exposure to inhaled radon and its progenies can be higher than a dose received from radium in building materials, it is suggested that radon exhalation measurements should receive due attention. In this contribution, the authors compare results gathered using a few methods for radon exhalation measurement and discuss its merits and demerits.

AB - The Jordan river basin is a part of the Middle East which has for centuries been a site of great religious, cultural, political and other upheavals. Bearing in mind that the resources of drinking water in this arid region are naturally limited, and that since 1930s there has been a rapid increase in population, expansion of urban areas, agricultural development and increase in industrial production, along with consequences caused by climate change, it is no wonder that limited resources of drinking water are a stumbling block and a source of tension, conflicts and clashes between countries in the region, i.e. Israel on one side, and the Arab states on the other. The paper especially highlights the geographical situation and the condition of drinking water resources in the basin of the Jordan river; factors and actors that jeopardize the drinking water resources; and conflicts and consequences of Israel's hegemony applied in resolving the division of drinking water resources in this basin.

AB - The term 'environmental refugees' include migrants forced to leave their place of residence, temporarily or permanently, as a result of environmental degradation. In order to create an appropriate framework for environmental refugees, typology must be first determined. It would comprise different conditions, as well as a combination of interactive and cumulative effects which make many areas on the planet being unproductive and unsuitable for life. This paper will give an overview of the attempts and problems related to finding an appropriate definition of environmental refugee. These challenges, which the international community needed to address, could finally lead to the recognition of environmental refugees in the legal system.

AB - An internally displaced people are people who are forced to flee but who remain in their own countries. World leading organizations on climate change indicate particularly the risks of flooding in South East Europe by the end of the XXI century. It is estimated that 90% of South East Europe is located within transboundary river basins and is poorly regulated, which makes the region highly prone to floods. The last decades have emphasized the vulnerability to the floods as well as an inadequate protection measures and disaster management, especially for Serbia and Bosnia and Herzegovina.

AB - Research activities of Vinca Institute have been based on two heavy water research reactors: a 10 MW one, RA, and zero power, RB. Reactor RA was operational from 1962 to 1982. In 2010, spent fuel has been sent to the country of origin, and the reactor now is in decommissioning. During the operational phase of the reactor there were no recorded accidental releases into the environment, only operational ones. Results of the environmental impact assessment of the assumed emission of radionuclides from the ventilation of nuclear reactor 'RA' in Vinca to the atmospheric boundary layer are presented in this paper. Evaluation was done by using the Gaussian straight-line diffusion model and taking into account characteristics of the reactor ventilation system, the assumed emission release of radioactivity (from the literature), site-specific meteorological data for six-year period and local topography around nuclear reactor, and corresponding dose factors for inventory of radionuclides. Based on the described approach, and assuming that the range of appropriate meteorological data for six year period for the application of described mathematical model is enough for this kind of analysis, it can be concluded that the nuclear reactor RA, in the course of its work from 1962 to 1982, had no influence on the surrounding environment through the air above regulatory limits.
Tokom operativnog rada reaktora nije bilo akcidentalnih emisija radioaktivnosti u životnu sredinu.

AB - Academician and Professor Vojislav S. Radovanović, as rarely any other Serbian geographer during the twentieth century, had rich, varied, and above all successful teaching, research-scientific, organizational-managerial, sociocultural, national- patriotic, and other public roles and functions. Especially impressive was the broadness of his research, scientific, educational, and organizational commitment where he successfully worked and achieved. This work focuses on Professor Radovanović's engagement in teaching at universities and especially on his teaching contents that are relevant for the establishment of environmental geography.

AB - The relationship between history of violent conflict in the Southern Europe and the Balkan Peninsula and various reconstructions of temperature in the Southern Europe over the last two millennia have been investigated. The research results indicate that in the period of the first millennium, conflicts were more intense during warmer period, both in the Southern Europe and on the Balkan Peninsula. On the other hand, in the second millennium, we find that in the Southern Europe and the Balkan Peninsula, during colder climatic periods, people were more inclined to violent conflicts.

AB - This paper presents an algorithm for the calculation of internal and external doses, which is an integral part of the mathematical model of atmospheric dispersion. Results of modeling were compared with values from an IAEA publication for a given scenario of radionuclide emission to the atmospheric boundary layer. Due to small differences in the results, compared to the IAEA recommended model, model presented in the paper can be used as a basis for this type of analysis. In order to illustrate the application of this mathematical model (atmospheric dispersion + module for the calculation of radiation doses), using data of the hypothetical emission of radionuclides,, ventilation parameters, then 3D topography and meteorological data, field of total annual dose received by a hypothetical resident in the vicinity of the reactor, during its routine operation over one-year period is presented.

AB - Drawing on a unique collection of both quantitative and qualitative data related to human trafficking, the paper attempts to evaluate not only the dynamics, forms and patterns of human trafficking in Serbia, but also the development of a national legal frame-work in the country. The most important factors that contribute to human trafficking in Serbia are its geographical position, poor social and economic conditions, and social marginalisation of vulnerable groups on one hand and, the ineffective functioning of state institutions in the eradication and prevention of human trafficking on the other.

abstract = "Drawing on a unique collection of both quantitative and qualitative data related to human trafficking, the paper attempts to evaluate not only the dynamics, forms and patterns of human trafficking in Serbia, but also the development of a national legal frame-work in the country. The most important factors that contribute to human trafficking in Serbia are its geographical position, poor social and economic conditions, and social marginalisation of vulnerable groups on one hand and, the ineffective functioning of state institutions in the eradication and prevention of human trafficking on the other.",

AB - Geography is one of the oldest academic disciplines with a strong holistic approach in conceptualizing the interaction between nature and society, i.e. animate and inanimate parts of the environment. Over time, geography has been increasing and improving its conceptual and terminological abilities for studying and understanding complex relationships among environmental systems. For this reason, geography has advanced from a well-known science about nature and society into a relevant science about the environment. The increased awareness about ecological crises creates conditions in which knowledge, theory, and practice of environmental geography have a perspective to grow and develop. Besides, society has been interested in environmental problems today more than ever before, and these problems, in many countries, have been ranked to be existentially and developmentally the most important. This perception of environmental problems contributes to the need for growth of scientific and practical interest for the state of surrounding and for further scientific and social affirmation of environmental geography.
Vremenom ona sadržinski i pojmovno, uvećava i usavršava sposobnost istraživanja i tumačenja složenih relacija u sistemima životne sredine. Porast svesti o ekološkoj krizi stvara uslove u kojima nauka, teorija i praksa geografije životne sredine ima perspektivu rasta i razvoja.

AB - Adventure tourism is a specific type of tourism that has been increasingly popular in Serbia in recent years. In this regard, the paper identifies the basic characteristics of adventure tourism, its development in Serbia, with a great emphasis placed on high mountain areas that, owing to their physical and geographic characteristics, possess huge potential. The paper aims, among other things, to identify factors encouraging or limiting development of adventure tourism in Serbia, analysing the practice, defining potential destinations and suggesting appropriate measures in order to promote it.

AB - This paper identifies the factors and consequences that led to geo-ecological transformation of wetland into agricultural landscape in Pancevacki rit (the Belgrade metropolitan area). The study is the result of regional geographical and geo-economic studies of Pancevacki nit, which, each year until 1932 when the system of defensive embankment was built around the region, had been exposed to flooding of the Danube and the Tamis rivers. After the construction of the defensive embankment in the period of 1932-1935 a system of melioration canals was also built and the river beds were channeled. That caused geo-ecological transformation of the territory: wetland and frequently flooded land became fertile, the settlements which had often been temporarily displaced became permanent, and in the period of 1931-2002 the number of inhabitants in the region multiplied 15.48 times. The results of the study confirm the initial hypothesis that the geo-ecological transformation of wetland into planned landscape and the vicinity of Belgrade (5 km) were the main factors that led to demographic explosion in Pancevacki nit caused by migrations, strong development of agriculture and suburban development, which has been confirmed by interviews conducted in settlements Borca and Ovca.
