AB - Martin Waldseemüller has a special place in the history of European cartography and geography, due to the original cartographic works that influenced the expansion of the geographical horizons of Europeans in the 16th century. In the introductory section, the author gives an overview of his most important works, which still attract the attention of researchers in the field of historical geography, historical cartography, toponomastics and related scientific disciplines. Author then analyzes the text and context of Waldzemiler's maps. The aim of this work is to shed new light on geographical knowledge of the Balkan Peninsula and Serbian countries in the age of Humanism and the Renaissance, based on an analysis of Martin Waldseemüller's geographic maps from the early 16th century. Special attention is paid to the contents of the map Tabula moderna Bossine, Servie, Gretiae et Sclavonie, from 1507.

Geographical perception of the Balkan Peninsula on the map of East by St. Jerome

AB - The paper analyzes the Map of East designed by St. Jerome (Eusebii Hieronymi), a Christian priest and confessor and one of the most knowledgeable people of his time (IV-V A.D.). The map focuses on the Balkan Peninsula, the Black Sea region, Asia Minor and Middle East. The schematic outline of the map reveals the contours of shores, islands, peninsulas and river flows. As typical of maps designed by medieval monks, the East is located on the upper side of the map and there is abundance of mythological biblical presentations. A great body of toponyms on the map suggests that St. Jerome had great geographical perception but his priority was the biblical context of the map not geographical accuracy. He originated from the Balkan Peninsula, the Roman province of Dalmatia, but having been a priest and the church leader he was more interested in locations of ancient and biblical myths, places visited by St. Paul and historical sites from where the early Christianity had spread. By interpreting toponyms, the paper analyzes the content and context of the map, and provides instructions for further reading and understanding. The analyzed toponyms refer to relief, islands, seas, rivers, regions and cities. The interpretation of toponyms represents a scientific contribution to historical cartography and historical geography of the ancient Balkan Peninsula and Middle East.
Tumačenje toponima predstavlja naučni doprinos istorijskoj kartografiji i istorijskoj geografiji Balkanskog poluostrva i Bliskog istoka antičkog doba.

AB - This paper represents summary of development of geographical and cartographical knowledge of Serbian authors about Serbia and Balkan. Important maps in the Serbian language are presented with a brief overview of their content, context and methodology. The main directions, stages of development and the most important cartographers and cartographic works in the Serbian language from the end of the XVII century to the creation of the Yugoslav state in the first quarter of the XX century are discussed. During this period, great historical and geopolitical changes took place in the Balkan Peninsula, such as revolutions, uprisings and wars, awakening the national consciousness of the Balkan peoples and the creation of nation-states. The development of Serbian cartography and geography in this period ranged from national romanticism, through descriptive and inventorying of geographical material, to explicit and applied scientific geography and cartography, which began with the establishment of two institutions at the end of the 19th century - the Geographical Section of the Serbian Army General Staff (today the Military Geographical Institute) and the Geographic institutes at the Big School (today's Faculty of Geography, University of Belgrade). The author traces the development of cartography through the evolution of content and the interpretation of the context of maps.

AB - The town of Rasa was mentioned in the tenth-century work De administrando imperio by Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus. The significance of this town in the Middle Ages is indicated by the fact that this toponym appears on old maps created by the greatest European cartographers from the fifteenth to nineteenth centuries. Based on cartographic and historical geographical sources, this paper considers various perceptions and texts connecting the town of Rasa with today's town of Razanj or with the medieval Serbian capital Ras. The subject treated is historical social geography. Five types of sources were used for the historical geography of the Balkans: old maps, chronicles, geographical nomenclature, archeological findings, and ethnographic findings. Based on written sources, geographical names, and geographical logic, the authors provide their own conclusions about the geographical position of the town of Rasa.

The Balkans on the geographical maps of Claudius Ptolemy

Grčić, Mirko

AB - The paper deals with the historical-geographical analysis of Ptolemy's maps known as Table V and Table IX. The maps were found in the "Urbinas Manuscript" of Ptolemy's work "Geography", which originated in the first half of the 2 nd century AD, so it is accepted that the maps are from that period also. On the Fifth Map the western part of the Balkan Peninsula was presented, and on the Ninth Map the area of the eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula, in the pre-Roman and early Roman era. On maps and in the text, which serves as an explanation of the maps, there are plenty of data from topography and ethnography, and astronomical positions for more places. The data on the maps are not always consistent with the information in the text. Although there are also false geographical representations, these maps were ahead of their time in terms of cartogra-phic methodology, geographical precision and toponomy. For over a millennium, this Ptolemy's work was lost and unknown in Europe, and when it was found in the 15th century, it significantly affected the Renaissance of geography and cartography, and the Renaissance of scientific thought in general. In this paper, the author deals with features and content analysis and identification of toponyms that have been presented on these maps, which have been aged more than two thousand years.

AB - Roman conquests and the spread of geographical horizon were simultaneously accompanied by road constructions all over the vast Roman Empire, which encompassed both nearer and distant provinces in countries of all three ancient world continents around the Mediterranean. This paper analyzes the content of the eminent Peutinger's map, which is assumed to be a copy of the original map dating back to the second half of IV century AD referring to the West Balkan peninsula.

AB - Vojislav Radovanović belongs to the classics of Serbian anthropogeographic school and his extensive work is topical today, not only because of plenty of facts collected at the territory of Macedonia and Serbia in early and mid XX century, but also for conceptions and methods, as well as depth of thought and logic of his observations. The main goal of this research paper is to shed light on research principles of classics of Serbian anthropogeography, led by Jovan Cvijić and to consider the model of classic anthropogeography according to V. Radovanović, which is representing the foundation of modern geography in Serbia. .

AB - Mačva is the lowland region in the northwestern part of Serbia, which due to natural and geopolitical benefits for the existence and security, was the meeting place of migration from the current Dinaric hilly and mountainous areas. Due to the demographic and migratory movements Mačva has historically been a multicultural and multi-ethnic environment, which took place in the complex processes of ethno-cultural interaction and assimilation. However, the historical memory and folk tradition, as well as some elements of folklore, mentalities and local identity, are still remnants of the countries of origin. The paper is devoted attention mainly origin population in Mačva placed in the context of socio-historical and political events. Researching included 35 settlements of Mačva.

Agriculture in a transitional crisis period: crop production in the administrative region of Belgrade from 1991 to 2002

AB - Serbia's decade of the 1990s was characterised by a long-lasting economic and political crisis. Throughout this period there was a constant decline in agricultural production, throughout Serbia. This downturn was more pronounced in the rural areas around Belgrade [Beograd]. Conventional urbanisation processes played only a supporting role in that development. The key force of the agricultural decline has to be seen in the economic crisis, in conjunction with the agricultural specialisation of this region. Results of this study on crop production (comparing 1991 with 2002 data) show that in the studied area subsistence farming gained significant importance; whereas simultaneously market-oriented production declined significantly. Furthermore, small-scale analyses of this study reveal results of structural changes, apart from the general outcome of rising subsistence. Concentration or specialisation on certain crops in few locations allowed still a high level of market-oriented production, even under these long-lasting crisis conditions.

AB - The paper discusses different determinants and the ambivalence of the Balkans term via physical-geographical, cultural-geographical, geopolitical, and demographic aspects. The specificities and problems of the cultural identity that emerged from a complex geographical structure and cultural-historical heritage were accounted for. Furthermore, a light was cast upon the Balkans features from the aspect of metaphors and cultural conglomerate. Finally, the impact of the spreading Europeism was pointed out, which was a new political and cultural feature affecting the transformation of the homo balcanicusa cultural identity.

AB - The paper discusses the perception of countries and cities of 10th century West Balkans according to Constantine Porphyrogenitus VII, as displayed on Guillaume Delisle's map and some recent findings within the field of historical geography. The aim of the paper is to argue the mid-10th century West Balkans map and identify the pioneer Slavic settlements on the basis of two mutually connected sources. The first one is De administrando Imperio by Constantine Porphyrogenitus VII dating back from mid-10th century, and the other one is a poorly studied but priceless map designed by Guillaume Delisle, a French cartographer, titled "Eastern Empire and neighboring regions of Constantine Porphyrogenitus ". According to Anselmo Banduri, a Benedictine scholar and historian from Dubrovnik, who wrote an extensive writing that became a part of Parisian corpus along with the latest edition of the famous Porphyrogenitus's essay, the map was designed around 1718.

AB - In previous papers, authors mainly discussed urbocentric model of development of the capitalist economy, or 'world-economy'. This paper discusses the evolution of urbocentric model of Western civilization as a complex project, from the middle Ages to the present process of globalization. It emphasizes the model of oligopolises - system of global cities which plays a key role in the globalization process.

AB - The aim of this paper is to contribute to the identification of the first inhabited cities in baptized Serbia at the beginning of the X century, mentioned by Constantine VII Porphyrogenitus. Writings from that time are important documents which provide a picture of the reality, but it is also necessary to carefully study the old maps. Of particular note is the French geographer and cartographer, Guillaume Delisle (Guillaume de L'Isle), a member of the Royal Academy of Science, from the beginning of the XVIII century, whose map 'Eastern Empire and neighboring regions of Constantine Porphyrogenitus' ('Imperio Orientalis et circumjacentium regionum sub Constantino Porphyrogenito et ejus praedecestoribus Descriptio') made on the data basis on Porphyrogenitus, so far not been used in the elucidation of uncertainty about the position of the first inhabited cities in christened Serbia. This map could be useful in researching of the networks of the cities, and territorial organization of Serbia and other Balkan countries.
Posebnu pažnju zaslužuje francuski geograf i kartograf Gijom de Lil (Guillaume de L'Isle), član Kraljevske akademije nauka, s početka XVIII veka, čija karta 'Istočna imperija i susedni regioni Konstantina Porfirogenita' ('Imperii Orientalis et circumjacentium regionum sub Constantino Porphyrogenito et ejus praedecestoribus Descriptio') urađena na bazi podataka Porfirogenita, do sada koliko nam je poznato, nije bila korišćena u rasvetljavanju nedoumica oko položaja prvih naseljenih gradova u pokrštenoj Srbiji.

Concept of cultural geography as a science

AB - Cultural geography was created as a reaction to geographic determinism and a static descriptive approach in researching the characteristics of cultural elements and forms distribution in classical anthropogeography. An American geographer Carl Sauer (1925) is considered to be its founder, although its aspects were present in Anthropogeography and Human geography (Géographie humaine) before. Even today, Cultural geography is defined differently: as a strict science with its methodological apparatus, or as an aspect or way of looking in geography. Sauer has defined this science in the spirit of the possibilistic concept of geography of Paul Vidal de la Blache. In the spirit of this concept, Jovan Cvijić's Serbian anthropogeography school was developed, which also has an expressive cultural-geographical aspect. The aim of this paper is to discuss issues of subject and methodological essence of Cultural geography in the light of different approaches and directions of development.

AB - This paper is a retrospective review of theory and concepts about the relationship between man and nature, which influenced the development of geographical thought and in certain historical conditions have the role of scientific paradigms. In this regard, the subject, methodological and gnoseological transformation of human geography has an explanation in the concept of the structure of scientific revolutions of T. S. Kuhn.
U vezi s tim, predmetni, metodološki i gnoseološki preobražaj društvene geografije ima objašnjenje u koncepciji o strukturi naučnih revolucija T. S. Kuna.

AB - Origin and meaning of the name of the city of Šabac was object of interest for many Serbian and foreign historical geographers, linguist geographers, anthropogeographers and others. Nevertheless, the meaning of this name has not been clearly researched till today. Some scientist believed that 'Zaslon, the city on the river Sava, is Šabac in Greek', some others believe that the name Šabac is in Serbian language. In this research paper authors deals with two hypotheses about the name. First hypothesis connects city name with the river Sava, and the second with name of god Sabacius (Sabazije), who was identified as Dionysus and Thracian god horse rider. However, these names are much older than material evidences about city genesis.

Space as a philosophical and geographic category

PY - 2011

AB - In this research paper the author discusses about the conceptualization of space in geography. The main attention is concentrated on the concepts of absolute, relative and relativistic space, then the geography as chorological science, regionalism and exceptionalism in geography. Besides chorological concept, author discussed the three more concepts of space -cultural landscape, space as a social product and the space as a product of power. Space as a product of power in its evolution has several phases -the phase of the territories, networking stage, the stage of cyberspace and ultimately create a "Dedale" or maze. In conclusion, all existing conceptualization of space are reduced in two aspects: ontological (objective) and ideal (subjective).
AB - U ovom radu autor raspravlja o konceptualizacii prostora u geografiji.

AB - This paper work exposed educationally function of geography, formulated strategic goals and objectives, highlighted priorities of teaching geography in the spirit of contemporary social needs. Traditional aim of geography is aware of the reality (our country and the world). According to the International Charter of Geographical education the basic function of geography is to give people hope, beliefs, and ability to fight for a better world and to the world peace, freedom, democracy and harmony. It is the goal of modern geographical science and teaching, which should be reconcile with the teaching content, methods and means.
AB - U radu su izložene obrazovno-vaspitne funkcije nastave geografije, formulisani strateški ciljevi i zadaci, istaknuti prioriteti razvoja nastave geografije u duhu savremenih društvenih potreba.

AB - Introductory part of the paper briefly presents the case study of sacred geography. This scientific discipline, as a branch of cultural geography, deserves more attention due to the development of cultural tourism and the protection of cultural heritage in globalization. Aim is to systematize and display characteristics of sacred objects and places of pilgrimage in the traditional orthodox Christianity. The author hopes that this work will attract the attention of geographers and intellectual circles, and stimulate researchers to devote greater attention to this important and current issue.

Afterwards, until the Second World War this area gave a lot of emigrants but still was densely populated due to high natural increase. The lost of population due to wars, emigration and depopulation caused a lot of problems. Nowadays more people originating from Dreznica are living out of Serbia.
