AB - Mount Golija was originally protected as a nature park in 2001, and in the same year its larger part was declared a Biosphere Reserve under the protection of UNESCO. Golija is protected due to its significant biodiversity values. However, there are a large number of protected geosites on the territory of the Nature Park. In recent years, detailed research has been carried out in order to register all geoheritage objects. Special attention was paid to the few but interesting speleological objects of geoheritage. So far, five objects have been investigated, mapped and recorded. They are smaller in size, but of very interesting genesis and geological structure.

AB - The paper aims to provide an overview of the most important parameters (the occurrence,
frequency and magnitude) in Vojvodina Region (North Serbia). Monthly and annual mean precipitation
values in the period 1946–2014, for the 12 selected meteorological stations were used. Relevant parameters
(precipitation amounts, Angot precipitation index) were used as indicators of rainfall erosivity. Rainfall
erosivity index was calculated and classified throughout precipitation susceptibility classes liable of triggering
soil erosion. Precipitation trends were obtained and analysed by three different statistical approaches.
Results indicate that various susceptibility classes are identified within the observed period, with a higher
presence of very severe rainfall erosion in June and July. This study could have implications for mitigation
strategies oriented towards reduction of soil erosion by water.

AB - One of the biggest problems of environmental protection in Serbia is landfills. It is often a case that the economic interests are predominant in the landfill sitting; thus, most landfills are not located according to standards. This study shows that detailed geological data assets combined with geographical modeling represents a reliable way to define and locate the landfill site. Geological evaluation is discussed in detail with regard to bedrock lithology, quaternary geology, geological structure, hydrogeology, surface runoff patterns, and topography. An approach combining geographical modeling and geology is presented for determining the sites suitable for landfill selection with respect to their geologic favorability. As opposed to numerous research papers on this topic, in the methodological procedure, special importance is devoted to the analysis of the geological criteria. In this way, it is significantly easier to determine the landfill area with the best characteristics due to geological structure and lithology which unequivocally and precisely indicates inadequate territories for candidate sites. The multicriteria decision analysis (MCDA) is based on geological criteria upgraded with road (primary, residential, secondary, and tertiary), settlements network, railway, airport, infrastructure, land use, hypsometry aquifer, wetland, and surface water. The score values are divided into four classes, i.e., restricted areas, suitable but avoid, suitable, and most suitable. Combining geographical modeling with geology led to the recognition of two locations to be most favorable for landfill site located in the most suitable area, which represents 25.3% of the study area.

AB - Protection and promotion of geoheritage has been changing and improving in recent decades, in line with the growing research in this field. Some research papers specifically study geomorphological geoheritage and introduce a special term - geomorphosite. Karst geomorphosites present specific objects of geomorphological heritage. On Kucaj and Beljanica mountains there is the largest karst area in Serbia. The purpose of this paper is to select and evaluate the scientific value of karst geomorphosites of Kucaj and Beljanica. More than one hundred karst geomorphosites were analyzed. In order to achieve more adequate coverage and representation, they were grouped into 25 geomorphotypes in three major geomorphological components of the investigated area. The results of this analysis highlighted the most important natural potentials of this area for establishing a karst-based geopark. More than 20 geomorphotypes have a positive recommendation index, which provides a good basis for further geotourism analysis.

AB - The article deals with the morphogenesis of the through cave Pećina na Reci Zamni (meaning in Serbian: Cave on the Zamna River; in further text: the Zamna Cave). The Zamna Cave was the subject of several geomorphological studies, mostly aimed at explaining the cave genesis through the evolutionary concept from through caves to natural bridges. In order to get better insight into the morphogenesis of this cave, modern geomorphometrical methods were applied. The cave and the surface topography above it were scanned in high resolution using the instrument Leica Nova MS50, applying the method of terrestrial laser scanning (TLS). Data processing produced the model for the analysis of the relation between surface and underground forms of karst relief. The results point to the conclusion that the Zamna Cave is an example showing that in the process of natural bridges formation by cave roof collapse, it is not necessary that there is a dry valley above the cave, as previously thought.

AB - This paper details methods that contribute towards solving the problem of the spatial relations between surface and underground karst morphology - relationships that are often unclear. The karst landforms studied in this context are karst valleys, through-caves and natural bridges. Two study sites are situated in the Carpatho-Balkan Mountains of eastern Serbia: the dry valley of the Radovanska Reka River on Mt Kučaj (together with the Pećura through-cave) and the Zamna Cave in the wider area of the Danube Gorge. The caves and the closest adjoining parts of the valleys were measured in detail using the terrestrial laser scanning method. The data obtained showed that some previous measurements at these locations, performed with classical traditional instruments, are insufficiently accurate and may lead to wrong conclusions.

AB - The analysis of basic morphological characteristics of the valleys in karst of the Serbian Carpatho-Balkanides showed the noticeable morphological differences (polymorphism). Polymorphism is a consequence of the influence of modifiers during the process of valley origin. The aim of the dissertation is to explain the causality of this influence within the case study of valleys in karst of the Serbian Carpatho-Balkanides, as well as to determine the dominant modifiers. The qualitative analyses are conducted on 2717 valleys and quantitative analyses on selected samples of 910 valleys. The comparative analysis of all the obtained results showed that several modifiers are dominant. None of these modifiers operates independently, but the combined effect of several dominant modifiers is evident. Dominant modifiers which lead to the polymorphism of valleys in karst of the Serbian Carpatho-Balkanides are: the contact of carbonate and non-carbonate rocks, precipitation, hydrological function of the valleys, inclinations of the valley floor and of the terrain in which the valley is incised, the thickness of carbonate rocks, fissure permeability and the intensity of karst process.

AB - The paper deals with the description of Samar natural bridge and collapse valley of Ravna River in eastern Serbia aiming to suggest an interpretation of their origin and development, in relationship with lithological and tectonic conditions, karst processes, and petrological analyses. In this study we present the geological setting, detailed morphology and hypothesis on the genesis of these karst landforms. The relationship between surface karst development and the geology is considerably acknowledged. The major contribution of the paper is to propose a framework for considering how recrystallization of limestone can affect the weathering potential of karst landforms and to introduce a term collapse valley. Finally, this study shows that the weathering potencial of the Samar natural bridge is decreased concerning the diagenetic changes these limestones underwent.

AB - The Zijovo Range belongs to the Prokletije Mountains of Montenegro and is located in the extreme southeast, on the border with Albania. Glacial processes were intensively active in this range during the Pleistocene. This is indicated by erosive and accumulative glacial features of relief that have been preserved due to the favorable geologic structure. The glacial maximum in the Zijovo Range is characterized by a unique glacier on the entire area of the range. Preglacial relief prevented the formation of a typical icecap glacier. Due to drainage of the central glacial mass in the direction of the preglacial valleys, there was a transection glacier in the central, northern, and northwestern parts, and an icefield glacier in the eastern and southeastern parts of the Zijovo Range. These glaciers covered an area of 180 km during the glacial maximum.

AB - Ovčar-Kablar gorge is after Fruška Gora Mountain the area with the largest number of old Serbian monasteries. This paper analyzes church orientation of all nine monasteries of the gorge from mathematical-geographical point of view, focusing on the churches of six monasteries that originate from the so called extended Middle Ages. Of these six churches only the axis of the Church of the Holy Trinity is directed exactly to the equinoctial east. Considering the means and methods that the chief architect could use, the orientation of monastery church of Vavedenje ('Presentation of Mary') with the aberration of only 4° can be also regarded as accurate. Moreover, this aberration could be the consequence of a mistake made by the chief architect about the date of equinox, which is also the case with the aberration of the monastery church of Sretenje ('Presentation of Our Lord'). The axis of the monastery church of Blagoveštenje ('Annunciation') is approximately directed to the point of the sunrise of summer solstice. Only the axis of the monastery church of Nikolje ('St Nicholas'), the oldest in the group of six of conditionally medieval churches, is out of the eastern sector of the horizon i.e. only this axis is not oriented in accordance with the ideal-type church rule.

The genesis and evolution of uvalas in Gajina mlaka paleovalley on the Kučaj mountains

AB - The evolution of Gajina mlaka paleovalley from pre-karstic to current phase reveals the complexity of process of transformation of valleys in karst and formation of fluviokarst uvalas. The creation of river network and formation of the valley of Gajina mlaka are related to successive withdrawal of the Pontiac Sea. Predominance of karstic process over fluvial causes the transformation of fluvial morphology into karstic. The degree of transformation depends on relationship of the intensity between these two opposed processes. Karstification covers all parts of Gajina mlaka valley which are built in karst. Riverbeds are almost completely transformed and dolines are formed along them. In the parts of valleys with more significant lithologic differences, more complex tectonic relationships and different pre-karstic fluvial morphology, larger forms of relief are created by karstic process and they are called uvalas. According to the presented method of genesis and evolution of uvalas it can be concluded that they are clearly morphologically and genetically individualized karst landforms, which negates some contemporary opinions that exclude both the term and form uvala as karstic element of relief.
AB - Evolucija paleodoline Gajina mlaka od prekraške do savremene faze otkriva složenost procesa transformacije dolina u krasu i nastanak fluvio-kraških uvala. Nastanak rečne mreže i stvaranje doline Gajina mlaka vezan je za sukcesivno povlačenje Pontiskog mora. Prevaga kraškog procesa nad fluvijalnim dovodi do transformacije fluvijane morfologije u krašku.

Mathematical-geographical intention in orienting mediaeval churches of the Serbian monastery Gradac

AB - The subject of the paper is an exact analysis of the orientation of the Serbian monastery churches: the Church of the Virgin Mary (13th century), St. Nicholas' Church (13th century), and an early Christian church (6th century). The paper determines the azimuth of parallel axes in churches, and then the aberrations of those axes from the equinoctial east are interpreted. Under assumption that the axes were directed towards the rising sun, it was surmised that the early Christian church's patron saint could be St. John the Baptist, that the Church of the Virgin Mary was founded on Annunciation day to which it is dedicated, and that St. Nicholas' Church is oriented in accordance with the rule ('toward the sunrise') even though its axis deviates from the equinoctial east by 41° degrees.
AB - Tema rada jeste egzaktna analiza orijentacije crkava srpskog manastira Gradac: Bogorodičine crkve (13. vek), crkve sv. Nikole (13. vek) i ranohrišćanske crkve (6. vek).

AB - Considering the fact that ecclesiastical rules do not precisely say that a church must be directed 'to the East' or 'to sunrise', it should always be checked if there is a connection between the orientation of a church and geometry of the Sun. In this paper, such examination is performed on the example of the church of St. John (the 13th century), one of four churches of the Studenica monastery, in the following way: 1) using gnomon method, the azimuth of the main longitudinal axis of the church is measured; 2) the altitude above the horizon of the point in which the extended axis of the church touches the true horizon is determined by cartometry; 3) the most probable dates when the Sun rises at that point are determined: May 7th according to Gregorian calendar, or April 30th according to Julian calendar, in the 13th century. The applied method is described in details and it can be applied for the analysis of the orientation of any other medieval church. This method can determine the time when the church was founded, as well as the fact if the church is original, or possibly erected on the foundations of some older sacral object.

AB - The alternation of glacial and carts processes as the consequence of frequent changes of glacial and interglacial phases could be recognized at the mountains Durmitor and Žijovo. Re-modeling of glacial morphology (cirques and trough valleys) carved currently karst topography with domination of uvalas. Their size and shape vary considerably as the consequence of differences within the preexisting glacial forms. Duration and intensity of kartification, which re-modeled former glacial forms into karst landforms, determine the degree of uvalas development and formation of three distinct evolution types of high-mountainous uvalas: glacial, glacial-karst and glaciofluvial.
AB - Kao posledica čestih smena glacijalnih i interglacijalnih faza na planinama Durmitor i Žijovo dolazi do smena glacijalnog i kraškog procesa.

Geomorphologic study of tufa on the locality Bigreni stream (Donja Bela Reka)

AB - The tufa accumulations in the valley of Bigreni stream are morphogenetically complex. The great importance for the occurrence of tufa, as in majority of other accumulations in Eastern Serbia, has the vicinity of the karst spring. The presence of cascades in the gorge of Bigreni stream enabled primary formation of waterfall tufa. After partitioning the gorge, the phase of the barrier tufa accumulation began. The erosive phase is currently present and therefore, once unique accumulation has been divided into several smaller accumulations. The possibility for protection because of the vicinity of the protected capped spring and the beauty of tufa waterfalls indicate the potential for tourist exploitation of this locality.

abstract = "The tufa accumulations in the valley of Bigreni stream are morphogenetically complex. The possibility for protection because of the vicinity of the protected capped spring and the beauty of tufa waterfalls indicate the potential for tourist exploitation of this locality., Bigarene akumulacije u dolini Bigrenog potoka morfogenetski su složene. AB - Sundial has several schools in Serbia, but they still represent a rare means of teaching. All existing clocks are vertical, and only in elementary school 'Banović Strahinja' there is a horizontal or analematic clock. The clock was donated Geography University of Belgrade, and that was a gift as a part of the celebration of International Year of Astronomy. The advantage of this clock is that the gnomon (shadow launcher) is a student himself, so that is an excellent teaching tool. In this project of the construction and use of solar analematic clock can be hired many teachers from different subjects (geography, mathematics, physics, art education, and teachers of primary school). The obvious lessons to analematic clock guarantees teacher active participation of pupils. .

The pleistocene glaciation of the upper flow of the Veruša river

AB - Traces of the Pleistocene glaciation in high mountains of Montenegro were detected already at the end of 19th century. However, some of these mountains have not been investigated since then. Žijovo, together with Širokar and the upper flow of Veruša River, belongs to this group of mountains. In this article, the conclusions of earlier explorers are compared to the results of contemporary explorations. The upper flow of Veruša River was under the glacial cover during the last two Pleistocene phases. Glacial type is the Alpic one, but developed under specific circumstences - karst relief from the period before the glaciations caused the specific "karst" type of glaciations.

AB - Montenegro occupies relatively small, southeastern part of the Dinaric mountains. Geological composition, which is predominantly carbonate, enabled formation of a great number of deep canyons and gorges. Canyons of Montenegro were formed in several ways, during multiple phases. Regardless of polygenetic and polymorphic character of the canyons, they can be classified into three main groups. By incision of melt-water rivers of Pleistocene glaciers, deep and particularly narrow canyons of small width were formed. The rivers that presently flow through these canyons have a nival regime - during the summer, their discharge is minimal, or they completely dry out. Depths of these canyons are up to 500 m. Rivers that directly feed into the Adriatic sea are of torrential character. They have pluvial regime, and dry out during the summer. Their canyons are short, several hundreds of meters deep. Deepest and longest canyons have been formed by incision of rivers that have changed their regimes during a longer period of time. Melt-water of Pleistocene glaciers has incised the greatest parts of canyons at the beginning of Holocene. Presently, river courses have nival-pluvial regime. In this group, single-phase and multiple-phase canyons can be distinguished (alteration of erosional and accumulation processes). Depths of these canyons exceed 1000 m.

Speleotourism in Serbia: Condition and development perspectives

AB - The development of speleotourism in Serbia is connected to the postwar period. Up to 80-s of the 20-th century the most caves are decorated in terms of tourism. Speleotourism was not continually developing, and most of the objects were put in order between 1970 and 1980. During the following decades development of speleotourism stays on the same level, and even starts to move in the opposite direction. Many objects were devastated during these years and they lost its tourist function. During the last couple of years, some tourist caves that were active in tourist sense were reorganized, and there is an improvement in speleotourist offer. The goal of this study is to analyze all the problems that led to the present condition and determine directions for the development of speleotourism in the future.
Poslednjih godina dolazi do preuređenja nekih ranije aktivnih turističkih pećina i do oživljavanja speleoturističke ponude.
