AB - Prof. Radovan Danić, PhD (1893–1979), an honorary lifetime President of the Astronomical Society Ruđer Bošković in Belgrade, owned a brass universal equinoctial ring sundial (98 mm in diameter), preserved by his descendants, who continued his work on popularizing astronomy through the activities of the society. The sundial (ring dial) was measured, tested and compared to similar portable sundials (pocket sundials) exhibited in various European museums. In the classification scheme, along with the Parmenion’s and astronomical rings, it belongs to a group of pocket armillary sundials that do not require a compass. More precisely, it is a self-orienting armillary sundial whose rings are located under the circles of the celestial sphere of the same name at the moment of measurement. Therefore, when the apparent solar time is known, it turns into a solar compass. A corresponding sundial on the horizon to the self-orienting armillary sundial is the analemmatic sundial. The construction of a self-orienting armillary sundial was first described in the late 16th century by the English mathematician William Oughtred (1574-1660). In collaboration with the gnomonists from England and Austria, we determined where and when Professor Danić’s sundial was constructed: Vienna, second quarter of the 18th century. Originally, the sundial was adjusted for the latitude of Belgrade or Zemun (nowadays, a Belgrade municipality), which were under the Austrian rule for a long time during the 18th century. It is a beautiful, well-crafted, well-preserved, expensive sundial and astronomical instrument that should be kept in a museum, in the first place in the Museum of Astronomy of the Astronomical Observatory in Belgrade.

AB - In Serbia, as in many other European countries, there has been a widespread revival of interest in gnomonics in recent decades. An increasing number of sundials and a growing number of publications on gnomonics demonstrate the popularity of sundialling. Accordingly, it is interesting to find out which gnomonic terms are used, when they appeared and how they developed. In Serbia (and the countries formed after the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia), societies of gnomonics enthusiasts do not exist and therefore it is not reasonable to expect any concern intended to preserve gnomonic heritage or the existence of the gnomonic terminological system. This assumption has been confirmed by the analysis of publications in the field of gnomonics published in the Serbian language. Due to unfavorable historical circumstances in the Balkans, Serbian scientific terminology began to form rather late (19th century) and the first gnomonic terms appeared at the beginning of the 20th century. They were introduced in the articles of the Serbian astronomers, professors Milan Nedeljkovic (1902) and Vojislav V. Miskovic (1930/1932). However, most of these terms have not been preserved. Contemporary gnomonic terminology is multidisciplinary, and when the terms belonging to neighboring sciences are removed, a small number of gnomonic terms remains. Among them, the following four are the key ones: gnomon, gnomonic projection, sundial and gnomonics. In this paper, a modified definition of the most important term - gnomon has been proposed as well as the definitions of all other key gnomonic terms related to it.

AB - The Franciscan friary in Dubrovnik (Croatia) has two old wall sundials mounted in the small and large monastery cloisters. Both indicate equinoctial hours according to the apparent solar time. It is known for one who made it and the year it was made in - Pasko Baletin in 1770, and for the other, there are no data. The second sundial has two scales; on the upper scale, the direction of the shadow indicates hours counted from midnight (Ore francese), whereas on the lower scale, the hours counted from the previous sunset are indicated by the tip of the shadow i.e. its "sunlet" (Ore italiche) as it has been believed so far. In order to check this, we calculated both scales, made drafts and compared them with the existing sundial scales: hour lines on the upper scale coincide, while on the lower scale all calculated hour lines deviate from the existing lines towards the west. However, when the calculations for the lower scale are done in accordance to the hours counted from the end of the civil twilight (Ore italiche da campanile) there is complete compatibility. This was confirmed by on-site observation of the sundial. It remains to search through Dubrovnik archives to discover when the two-scale sundial was made. The last-mentioned variant could have been brought to Dubrovnik in the second half of the 18th century, and since then there was a need to construct a two-scale sundial.

Asterism and constellation: terminological dilemmas

AB - In contemporary astronomical literature, there is no uniform definition of the term asterism. This inconsistency is the consequence of differences between the traditional understanding of the term constellation, from the standpoint of the naked eye astronomy, and its contemporary understanding from the standpoint of the International Astronomical Union. A traditional constellation is a recognizable star configuration with a well-established name, whereas the International Astronomical Union defines a constellation as an exactly defined sector of the cosmic space that belongs to a particular traditional constellation. Asterism is a lower rank term in comparison to constellation, and as such it may not denote a whole traditional constellation, as these terms would become synonymous and parts of constellations would become "asterisms of asterisms". Similarly, asterism cannot define a macro configuration composed of the brightest stars in more constellations, thus, the Summer Triangle and other sky polygons are not asterisms. Therefore, asterisms are neither constellations nor sky polygons, but the third - easily recognizable parts of traditional constellations with historically well-established names, including separate groups of smaller stars that belong to star clusters (autonomous asterisms). Forms and names of asterisms may or may not be consistent with the parent constellation, and accordingly asterisms can be divided into compatible and incompatible. If asterisms have outlived the exact division of the celestial sphere and remained irreplaceable celestial landmarks in the naked eye astronomy, then it is high time for the International Astronomical Union to agree on the definition of asterism and to compile their official list.

AB - We assessed the influence of environmental values on the proenvironmental behavior of youth in Serbia by assessing the level of their satisfaction with environmental conditions and their sense of personal environmental responsibility. Participants were 168 15-year-old boys and girls who were pupils in their final year at primary schools in Belgrade. We found that 9.5% of the variability in the students' proenvironmental behavior could be explained by individual differences regarding their environmental values, environmental satisfaction, and environmental responsibility. The results obtained from this study should provide curriculum developers, educators, and teachers with a deeper understanding of methods and strategies to use in order to raise environmental awareness and to encourage environmentally responsible behavior among young people in Serbia.

AB - The aim of the study is to analyse trends regarding the implementation of environmental education in teaching geography and to determine the existing correlation between the elements of the teaching process such as: the presence of environmental topics in teaching of geography, dominant teaching methods, levels of students knowledge, and teachers' attitudes towards the importance of environmental education. The results show that environmental content is not present enough in practical work of geography teachers in elementary schools, that environmental topics are usually considered only declaratively, and that in those circumstances the possibility for students to form any kind of conceptual and procedural knowledge has been reduced to minimum. Most commonly applied approach is the transmission approach, while the student-directed methods are used less often. More frequent application of active learning strategies in the classroom shows significant linear correlation with the intensity of study of environmental topics, as well as the implementation of an interdisciplinary approach that leads to formation of conceptual and procedural knowledge of students. Linear regression analysis also confirms that the positive attitudes of teachers towards the educational importance of environmental education do not have significant influence on the change in their usual way of teaching.

AB - Geographical names (toponyms/ place names) present language forms used to name natural and man-made geographical objects. As part of onomastic material, they are studied by various scientists and researchers: geographers and cartographers, linguists, historians, archaeologists, ethnographers, anthropologists, sociologists and others. A multitude of geographical names around the world requires a system of unambiguous designation in national and international communication. The greatest possible regularity in communication and identification is achieved by standardization of geographical names. Written and spoken forms of geographical names in official language or languages of each country are established through standardization. Also, standardization promulgates regulations for the use of geographical names in national and international communication. Some of the most important issues of standardization are: selection of geographical names that should be standardized, toponymic sources (primary and secondary), use of exonyms, linguistic transformation, conversion (transliteration and transcription), registration and publication of standardized names, etc...
Mnoštvo geografskih imena u jezicima sveta iziskuje potrebu uspostavljanja nedvosmislenog označavanja geografskih entiteta u nacionalnoj i međunarodnoj komunikaciji.

AB - A city is the most significant factor that affects environmental changes. They are directly caused by demographic, industrial, traffic, agricultural, tourist, and other various anthropogenic processes. Moreover, cities are the major consumer of natural resources. By occupying and exploiting vast areas of land, they destroy soil resources, influence the quality of water and air, influence flora and fauna, change climate not only on their territories, but in their closer and more remote neighborhood, too. A city as a whole, cannot be observed independently from its nearby surroundings because their interdependence influences the quality of life of the population and has manifold effects on the sustainable urban growth. Today, many cities are faced, on one hand, with issues such as satisfaction of the population needs, and, on the other, with challenges of sustainability. The principles of sustainable development, integrity and public participation are the most fundamental in urban growth. Appropriate approach to planning sustainable urban development of cities should be implemented through adequate spatial and urban planning, with precisely defined growth policies, programs and plans for protection and improvement of the environment. Taking into account the fact that effective city management comes upon numerous obstacles, this paper will consider strategic and institutional issues, problems and possible solutions for the environment protection.
