AB - This paper analyzes water quality from four hydrological stations in the Nisava river basin from 2009-2018 based on the following parameters: pH, conductivity, O-2 saturation, BOD5, suspended solids, total oxidized nitrogen, phosphates, turbidity and coliform bacteria. Authors have applied WQI (water quality index) as the most reliable indicator of the watercourses pollution for setting of surface water flow quality. Statistical analysis of variance (ANOVA) using t-test inferential statistical analysis and post-hoc Tukey test were applied to evaluate statistically significant differences between specific data groups. The results show that bad water quality was registered on all the profiles on an annual basis (WQI = 65-71). The river water pH decreases downstream, while values of BOD5, suspended solids, turbidity, TON, phosphates and coliform bacteria gradually increase. The waters of the Nisava at the station Nis belong to the third class of waters and they are mostly loaded with organic matter originating from waste sewage and industrial waters of both urban and rural areas.

AB - The aim of this research is to determine the change in the spatial distribution of erosion intensity in the territory of the Jablanica River Basin in the period 1971-2016 caused by land use and demographic changes. The Erosion Potential Method (EPM) was used to quantify changes in erosion intensity and to estimate the total annual sediment yield. The research results show that the value of the erosion coefficient decreased from 0.432 in 1971 to 0.360 in 2016. Specific annual gross erosion in the Jablanica River Basin was 654.41 m(3)/km(2)/year in 1971, while in 2016 it was 472.03 m(3)/km(2)/year. The analysis of proportional changes was used to determine demographic changes and land use patterns in the basin area. In terms of the scale and intensity of the erosion process, three types and one sub-type of population dynamics of settlements and land use changes were distinguished, respectively: progressive, stagnant, regressive and dominant regressive. It was concluded that the results show the significance of demographic and land use changes in the control of the intensity of erosion. The Soil Erosion Map may be useful to planners and land use managers to take appropriate decisions for soil conservation in the basin.

AB - The Sokobanja basin is an area in Eastern Serbia with diverse geological and geomorphological features. Also, it is an area with developed spa tourism. The Sokobanja basin has numerous geoheritage features, which tourist potential has not been discovered yet. In this article, several geosites were analyzed, which present significant geoheritage formations. Geosites were selected by authors of this article based on the degree of their attractiveness for the geotourism development. The main goal of this article is to emphasize the geotourism potential of the Sokobanja basin and to determine the current state and geotourism potential of evaluated geosites by applying the modified geosite assessment model (M-GAM). A total of seven geosites were evaluated throughout the basin. The values of the investigated parameters were entered into the matrix of the M-GAM based on the number of points. Based on the research and the results obtained, it can be concluded that the Sokobanja basin has the potential for the development of geotourism, but it is necessary to improve additional values to become a true geotourism destination.

AB - Periodicity of temperature on three stations in the Nisava River valley in period 1949-2014, has been analyzed by means of Fourier and wavelet transforms. Combined periodogram based on fast Fourier transform shows considerable similarity among individual series and identffies significant periods on 2.2, 2.7, 3.3, 5, 6-7, and 8.2 years in all datasets. Wavelet coherence analysis connects strongest 6-7 years spectral component to Mediterranean oscillation, starting in 1980s. Combined periodogram of Mediterranean oscillation index reveals 6-7 years spectral component as a dominant mode in period 1949-2014. Wavelet power spectra and partial combined periodograms show absence of 6-7 years component before 1975, after which this component becomes dominant in the spectrum. Consistency between alternation in temperature trend in the Nisava River valley and change in periodicity of Mediterranean oscillation was found.

AB - The changes and oscillations in air temperature during the second half of the 20th and in the early 21st century, have become one of the major concerns of almost all scientific disciplines. Such changes are noticeable both at the local and global level. The objective of this paper is to point out that the changes of this climate element can also be detected at the local level. The research underlying this paper is, in terms of territory, limited to the Sokobanja basin in Eastern Serbia. The analysis relies on the data on air temperature for the period 1946-2012 taken from the Meteorological weather station located in Sokobanja. The obtained data were processed in line with the recommendations of the World Meteorological Organization. The evidenced statistically significant changes in air temperature were examined using the following statistical tests: Pettit test, Standard Normal Homogeneity test, Buishand range test, and von Neumann test.

AB - In mid-July 2012, hundreds of fires spread over forest stands in the south of Europe. Considering available satellite and meteorological data we have tried to determine a method using analogy, whether these fires were preceded by the intensified solar activity. The justification of this approach lies in the belief that it is impossible by direct or indirect activity of man to set fire at the same time to the sites that are geographically separated. In this paper we have tried to test the hypothesis claiming that charged particles coming to us from the Sun may be responsible for the number of forest fires. Unlike some other situations when the potential explanation could be a sudden influx of the protons of different energy ranges, in our study, there are electrons as carriers of the potential explanation. Many previous studies results have shown that there is statistically significant relationship between the processes on the Sun and certain movements of air masses in the atmosphere our planet. The presented results in this paper of the correlation relationships between the mean hourly flows of electrons and the mean hourly air temperatures in Belgrade and Rome and the analysis of the synoptic situation as a function of the suggested model so far, indicate that the number of fires that were occurring more than a week, from July 15, 2012, in the south of Europe, were caused by electrons coming from the Sun.

AB - Karst bare is a hydrogeological phenomenon which denotes a karst terrain of limited area completely surrounded by rocks of low permeability, i.e. whose lower part is enclosed and bordered by more or less impervious rocks impeding ground water flowing out of the karst area. Sokobanja basin is one of the first localities where this kind of karst was detected. This study represents a preliminary geochemical analysis of karst bare samples from this locality. Atomic absorption spectrometric analysis shows that the studied samples are composed predominantly of Ca and contain minor amounts of Mg, probably in form of carbonate minerals obtained by dissolving with mineral acids. There are no detailed geochemical data about karst barre from this or any other locality in the available literature to date.

AB - Ethnopharmacological relevance: This study reports on the uses of medicinal plants and ethnobotanical significance of Mt. Rtanj, Eastern Serbia. The aim of the study was collecting information on plant utilization and creating the list of medicinal plants collected by local community in the region of Rtanj Mt. in Serbia. Methodology: A group of generally elderly people from the region were interviewed, asked to identify a certain number of plant taxa used against various human ailments. A quantitative ethnobotanical comparison has been performed in relation to other studies concerning the central Balkan Peninsula. Results: There is an inventory of 45 plant species recorded. At the family level, the most common in traditional usage were species of Labiatae (22%), Rosaceae (20%) and Compositae (13%). The results of the survey suggested that Hypericum perforatum was the most popular medicinal plant. Among the 7 different recorded types of preparation, the aerial parts of plants were the most popular (47.3%). The most frequently reported medicinal uses of herbal drugs include remedies for immune system (22.97%), respiratory system (15.77%) and digestive system disorders (15.32%). However, a comparatively small number of available plant species was used for medicinal purposes while the level of ethnobotanical diversity was lower when compared to adjacent regions. Conclusions: Ethnobotanical knowledge in this area is decreasing due to high emigration rates during the last period. The historically developed ethnobotanical heritage should be preserved and promoted on the larger level, getting the special position in the future management plans for this area.

AB - The temperature of charged particles coming from the Sun ranges from several hundred thousands to several millions °C, in extreme cases. Theoretical possibilities of the hydrodynamic air mass seizing by charged particles, i. e. solar wind, are discussed in this paper. On one hand, they are characterized by extremely high temperatures, on the other, by the compression of cold air at an approximate altitude of 90 km towards the top of the cloud of the cyclone, they influence the phenomenon of extremely low temperatures. By using the Mann-Whitney U test we have tried to determine the potential link between certain indicators of solar activity and resulting disturbances in the atmosphere. Analyzed data refer to global daily values for the 2004-2010 period. Our results confirm the possibility of coupling between the charged particles and the vortex air mass movements, based on which a more detailed study of the appearance of a tornado near Sombor on May 12th, 2010, was carried out. It has also been proven that there are grounds for a causality between the sudden arrival of the solar wind charged particles, i. e. protons, and the appearance of a tornado. Based on the presented approach, elements for an entirely novel prediction model are given.

AB - The paper focuses on the possibilities of generating electrical energy by means of PV solar plants of 1 MW in Serbia. Further on basic physical characteristics of solar cells made of monocryistalline silicon, CdTe and CIS solar cells and a description of the fixed PV solar plants, one-axis and dual-axis tracking PV solar plants are given. The paper proceeds to tackle the legislative frame concerning renewable sources of energy and the current state of the use of PV systems in Serbia, climate conditions and energy potential of the renewable sources in Serbia. Apart from PVGIS solar map of Serbia real meteorological data for 17 towns in Serbia are given. Based on PVGIS program, geographycal position and the results of PVGIS calculation of the yearly average values of the optimal panel inclination, solar irradiation on the horizontal, vertical and optimally inclined plane, ratio of diffuse to global solar irradiation and linke turbidity for some cities in Serbia are given. Total for year sum of global irradiation per square meter received by the modules of the fixed PV solar plants, optimally inclined one-axis and dual-axis tracking PV solar plants of 1 MW and total for year electricity production of different types of PV solar plant of 1 MW for 23 cities in Serbia obtained by PVGIS are given. Comparison of total for year electricity production of different types of PV solar plant of 1 MW with monocrystaline silicon, CdTe and CIS solar modules, respective, for 23 cities in Serbia is given. Calculations performed by PVGIS program have shown that irrespectable of the type of PV solar plants, most electrical energy in Serbia can be generated by means of PV solar plants with CdTe solar cells. Some practical data and considerations given in this paper can be used by a customer or company keen to invest in the PV sector in Serbia. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

AB - Hydropower, biomass, biogas, biofuels, wind power, solar energy and geothermal energy are the major resources to provide the Republic of Serbia with most of renewable energy in the future. In this paper, the focus will be on renewable sources, specifically on thermomineral, thermal and mineral waters in the Carpatho-Balkanides Region (Eastern Serbia). The territory of Serbia is very rich in sources of mineral, thermal and thermomineral water. These numerous sources differ in their physico-chemical properties. Thus, they represent a very important natural resource with versatile possibilities for their usage. Region of Carpatho-Balkanides (Eastern Serbia) is highlighted in this regard. The distribution of mineral, thermal and thermo-mineral waters in this region is very significant, both by the number of known occurrences and deposits, as well as by the presence of certain types or classes and subclasses of water. This potential, at the same time, represents the basis for the development of various activities in the fields of medicine, tourism, sport and recreation, water bottling industry, as well as in processing of various mineral, agriculture etc. All these facts imply on the need for detailed and complex investigations in the field of hydrogeology of this natural wealth which offers, in economic terms, the great opportunities for the development and growth. However, the practice, on studied territory, showed neither proper understanding nor proper approach to the exploitation of this raw potential.

AB - FTIR spectroscopy has been used to detailed study of bituminous limestone samples from two different locations at Maganik Mountain (Montenegro). Bituminous limestone at Maganik Mountain occurs as carbonate sediments in three levels and belongs to the early Cretaceous. Our specimens come from the oldest sediments of this limestone belonging to Barremian age. Particular attention has been given to investigation of isolated asphaltenes and kerogens. The FTIR technique provides fine determination of various organic and inorganic functional groups, as well as aliphatic and aromatic carbon and hydrogen. Due to the structural complexity of kerogens and asphaltenes, in this study we have done correlations of particular infrared absorptions to various functional groups. The asphaltenes of studied samples show higher contribution of aromatic structures than the kerogens. Notable differences in FTIR spectra of some samples that are reflected as shift of peak locations and a variety of intensities are attributed to eventual differences in the microbial precursors and/or depositional environments, conditions of sedimentation and/or genesis.

AB - This paper gives the results of the electricity generated by the fixed, one-axis and dual-axis tracking photovoltaic solar plant of 1 MW with flat panels made of monocrystalline silicon which is to be built in the area of Sokobanja (spa in Serbia). Further on follows a description of the functioning of the fixed and one-axis and dual-axis tracking solar plants. For the calculation of the electricity generated by these plants PVGIS program was used. Calculations have shown that fixed photovoltaic solar plant power of 1 MW, solar modules of mono-crystalline silicon yield 1130000 kWh power output, one-axis tracking solar plant yields 1420000 kWh, and dual-axis tracking solar plant yields 1450000 kWh of electricity. Electricity generated by the fixed photovoltaic solar plant could satisfy 86% of the annual needs for the electricity of the 'Zdravljak' hotel and the special 'Novi stacionar' hospital in Sokobanja.

AB - The settlements of Sokobanja municipality underwent intensive changes in the second half of the 20th century. These changes were manifested on all components of demographic development and caused the alterations of the functional type of settlements .This work discusses the functional transformation of the settlements of Sokobanja municipality in the period from 1953-2002. Applying the quantitative methods ,it has been established that these changes led to the decrease in the share of purely agrarian settlements and the increase in the share of agrarian -service-providing and purely service-providing settlements. .

AB - The spa resort Sokobanja has undergone a long and continual tourism development. In the year 1827. the first guest was registered. Since then Sokobanja has occupied a significant place in the development of Serbian spa tourism. According to the number of visits and night-beds, Sokobanja has held the second place since 1975. The record number of visits (98.471) was achieved in 1987. and the record number of night-beds (840.484) in 1986. This paper points to the advantages of the tourism-geographic position of Sokobanja, significant and versatile treasure of its natural and anthropogenic resources, as well as the material basis for its tourism development. In addition, the basic features and tendencies of the so far development are highlighted and possibilities for further tourism development are considered.
