AB - The main aim of this paper is to examine the economic trajectories of persons who have
changed marital status. Based on the data from the Survey on Income and Living
Conditions SILC (waves 2014-2017), the author uses sequence analysis to construct
economic activity histories separately to the subsamples of single to married men and
women, married to divorced men and women, and married to widowed men and women.
The results show that the different types of marital change are associated with different
patterns of economic activity transitions. In general, it turns out that ensuring stable
employment is a „prerequisite“ for marriage, and also that economic instability can be
considered as a cause of marriage dissolution and divorce. On the other side, different
gender patterns of economic activities transitions by types of marital change suggests
slow slow separation from traditional marital behavior (patriarchy).

AB - The paper draws attention to the process of urban growth in the
Western Balkans, which is principally reflected in the physical
expansion into the surrounding area, leading to the conversion of
land into urban fabric – urban sprawl. According to the principles
of sustainable development, this process is considered unjustified,
especially if it is not a consequence of population growth. The
features and the intensity of urban sprawl in the Western Balkans
have been determined by mathematical and statistical methods,
using data from the Urban Atlas database. The main common
features and differences related to urban sprawl in the analyzed
cities are determined by several factors, which are discussed in
the paper. The purpose of the analysis of the intensity of urban
sprawl between 2012 and 2018 is to ensure a better
understanding of future processes that pose a potential ‘threat’ in
environmental terms, but also of other aspects of sustainable
development, relevant for bodies and individuals responsible for
urban planning. In accordance with the methodology used, the
results of the research confirm the presence of urban sprawl in
Western Balkan cities, although it has not been proven that there
are features common to all cities for any of the analyzed indicators.

Family Formation among Serbian Millennials

AB - The starting point of the paper is that the
Millennials highly rank professional achievement in their lives; therefore, education and
career are crucial for family formation decision-making. The author started from the fact that
the specific socioeconomic context of living in Serbia can create an obstacle to parenthood.
The paper aims to examine the multilevel predictors of entry into parenthood among
Millennials. A multilevel analysis based on the EU-SILC survey data served to study family
formation as a function of individual, partner's and household socioeconomic characteristics.
The results suggest that a large part of the variations in the age of entering into parenthood
can be explained by individual and partner's socioeconomic characteristics, while household
characteristics are not significant. The findings confirm the importance of professional
achievement as a "precondition" for family formation, which is reflected through education
among women and economic stability among men.

“Satisfied Life Years” in the former Yugoslav countries

AB - This paper proposes a subjective indicator of quality of life. The author defines this indicator as Satisfied Life Years (SLY) based on the fact that being alive is an essential prerequisite for enjoying any quality of life. While life expectancy is at the basis of this indicator, SLY also reflects that mere survival is not enough; therefore, life years are combined with the subjective assessment of satisfaction with different domains of life. Based on data from the EU-SILC survey and WHO life tables, the author uses the well-established Sullivan method. SLY are calculated by weighting in a life table the age-specific person-years lived with age-specific proportions of satisfaction with different domains of life (health, financial situation, personal relationships, living environment, and happiness). The subjective character of SLY makes it adequate for assessing and comparing the quality of life in homogeneous nations/countries/regions. Therefore, the focus of the paper is on the former Yugoslavia given the similarities in terms of mentality and cultural characteristics in the republics. The main results indicate the following: (1) there is a large gap of as much as 25 years (on average for former Yugoslav republics) between total years of life and actually satisfied years; (2) the economic and ecological dimensions are the dimensions with the most dissatisfaction of quality of life in the former Yugoslav republics; (3) happiness is associated with a good relationship with family, friends, and colleagues as well as good health in all former Yugoslav republics, which reflects the traditional background in the former Yugoslav region.

Difference in fertility between women with and without tertiary education in Serbia

Mirić, Natalija

(Matica srpska, Novi Sad, 2019)

TY - JOUR
AU - Mirić, Natalija
PY - 2019
UR - https://gery.gef.bg.ac.rs/handle/123456789/955
AB - This paper points to the relative importance of childlessness (childlessness effect), postponement of motherhood to later ages (age composition effect), and fertility rates conditional upon age at entry into motherhood (rates effect) in explaining overall difference in the level of fertility between women with and without tertiary education. The author estimates these indicators for three age cohorts, 45-49, 50-54, and 55-59, and thus show whether and how the relative contribution of these three effects has changed over time. The decomposition method based on the data from the Census of Population, Households and Dwellings (2011) is used in this paper. The results indicate that the difference in fertility between women with and without tertiary education is 0.35, on average for the analyzed age cohorts. Decomposition method shows that childlessness effect and age composition effect have significantly contributed with over 80% to this difference. This finding suggests that postponing of childbearing among women with tertiary education has a continuous, dominant importance in the deterministic basis of the educational differentiation of fertility. On the other side, a weaker rates effect (20-23%) is evident in all age cohorts. Reason for this is an absence of fertility recuperation among women with tertiary education (in contrary to some European countries), thus reflecting the same (not so favorable) socio-economic and institutional context of life in which all women realize reproduction.

Reason for this is an absence of fertility recuperation among women with tertiary education (in contrary to some European countries), thus reflecting the same (not so favorable) socio-economic and institutional context of life in which all women realize reproduction., Cilj rada je da se razlika u fertilitetu između žena sa i bez tercijarnog obrazovanja u Srbiji "razloži" na tri efekta koji reflektuju odstupanja u reproduktivnom ponašanju između ove dve grupe žena.

Increase in the completed cohort fertility of high-educated women: A focus in the creation of population policy in Serbia

AB - Considering the recorded increase in the completed cohort fertility of high-educated women in the period 1991-2011, the aim of this paper is to indicate how many changes in the parity progression ratios contribute to this change. Using decomposition method based on population censuses 1991 and 2011, author decomposes the change in completed cohort fertility among high-educated women above reproductive age. The results show that the change in completed cohort fertility was mostly driven by increases in progression ratios to the first and the second birth. Given that there is a growing tendency to motherhood, but that it stops on one child (possibly two children), it can be said that the focus of population policy should be to facilitate decision making about entering into parenting.

AB - Population education is one of the strategic measures to encourage giving birth in low-fertility Serbia. The expected result is that such education may have an effect on reproductive intentions and overall people behavior. This study explores the thoughts about reproduction of three different student groups from the University of Belgrade, whereas their specific knowledge about demography ranges from basic to very good. The intention was to clarify whether awareness and knowledge about demographic problems change attitudes on reproduction of future highly educated people. The study was performed via a survey that was conducted among: Demography students, who have studied demographic phenomena for at least 3years, students who have taken only one course in demography during their studies and students who have not acquainted themselves with demographics throughout their studies. It is based on the students' views of ideal, desired and expected family size, on an evaluation of factors that affect reproduction, on identifying other beliefs relevant for future reproduction, as well as on a discussion with Demography students. Demographic education did not show to be an essential factor of differentiating reproductive norms of students. Collective rationality and a reflection of the economic crisis on reproductive intentions are dominant student responses.

AB - The author investigate the general pattern of childlessness by woman's educational level, with the addition of regional analysis of educational pattern of childlessness at the level of NUTS 3 areas. Analysis which is based on data from the Census of Population and Households (2011) includes women who are above or at the end of reproductive age (4549, 50-54, 55-59). According to International Standard Classification of Education ISCED-97, cohorts of women born between 1952 and 1966 are classified into five modalities of the educational structure: without education, primary-educated, secondary-educated, low-tertiary educated and high-tertiary educated. The main conclusions of an analysis are following: first, voluntary childlessness is typical for tertiary-educated women which indicates a dominant negative effect of opportunity costs; second, pattern of childlessness by woman's educational level spatial differentiate.

AB - The aim of this study was to determine regional and gender differences in motivators for establishing home-based businesses (HBBs) in a former Communist country, Serbia. It is widely accepted that a divide exists between opportunity-driven and necessity-driven entrepreneurs, with HBBs having a greater chance of survival if they are established for opportunity reasons. The fact that a large proportion of HBB owners in the sample reported opportunity motivators (56.7%) suggests that HBBs have a good chance of success in Serbia. The sample was devised of 310 HBB owners (contacted via a postal survey), stratified by gender, location (urban/rural) and type of residence (city/village). When asked to select their primary motivator, 43.3% of respondents selected the necessity motivator, stating that an HBB was "the only chance of employment". Necessity motivators were more frequently cited in urban areas, compared to rural areas, and 48.9% of women and 35.8% of men started their own business out of necessity. This indicates that there is still a long way to go before gender gaps are closed, as well as that equality must further be promoted in employment and other spheres of public policy (e.g. local economic development). These observations may contribute to establishing home-based business activities as significant contributors to the sustainability of rural communities, as well as to the promotion of awareness and support for self-employment.

AB - The paper analyzes poverty in the context of the implementation of the first Millennium Development Goal in Serbia. This analysis included the recommended indicators for measuring the implementation of the three tasks within this goal, which is related to the reduction of unemployment, reduction of poverty and eradication of hunger in Serbia. Calculation of indicators involves the use of multiple sources of data: Labor Force Survey, Household Budget Survey, Multiple Indicator Cluster Survey, Survey on Income and Living Conditions. A particular advantage of this analysis is that puts Serbia in a European context by comparing of certain indicators which indicates not only the achievement of the first Millennium Goal but also on the overall development.
Izračunavanje indikatora podrazumeva korišćenje više izvora podataka: Anketa o radnoj snazi, Anketa o potrošnji domaćinstva, Istraživanje višestrukih pokazatelja položaja žena i dece, Anketa o prihodima i uslovima života.

AB - This paper explores the pattern of parity of liveborn children with respect to the women's educational level. Cohort method of demographic analysis based on data from Census of Population and Households (2011) is used in this research. The analysis includes all women who were above reproductive age and those who aged between 40 and 49 years at the moment of conducting of the Census 2011. The indicators which are used in this analysis are: percent of childless, share of women by order of birth and probabilities of an increasing of family. The educational structure of women includes three modalities: low-educated, secondary-educated and high-educated women. Results show that pattern of parity of liveborn children has differed with regard to the women's educational level.

AB - This paper examines the role which different demographic groups (youth, persons of prime working age and older persons) have played in the overall change of the labour force (reproduction), changes in the educational attainment and changes in the distribution of occupations. This paper uses the pseudo-cohort analysis and cross-sectoral data collected from the Labour Force Survey. Main findings show that the educational attainment of new entrants into the labour force was higher than that of retiring workers over the time period of 2004–2014. The composition of occupational changes over the decade confirmed what had been observed for the educational attainment of the labour force. Young new entrants into strongly growing occupations (most of which were highly skilled) by far outnumbered the retirees over the past decade.

AB - The paper analyzes the economic characteristics of the population of Serbia in the census of population 2011th. The main characteristic of the census 2011th , as economic structure is concerned, is the classification of economic activities, which includes just two modalities, economically active and economically inactive. The lowest rate of economic activity in the postwar period recorded in the census 2011th, in the amount of 41.3%.
