AB - Prof. Radovan Danić, PhD (1893–1979), an honorary lifetime President of the Astronomical Society Ruđer Bošković in Belgrade, owned a brass universal equinoctial ring sundial (98 mm in diameter), preserved by his descendants, who continued his work on popularizing astronomy through the activities of the society. The sundial (ring dial) was measured, tested and compared to similar portable sundials (pocket sundials) exhibited in various European museums. In the classification scheme, along with the Parmenion’s and astronomical rings, it belongs to a group of pocket armillary sundials that do not require a compass. More precisely, it is a self-orienting armillary sundial whose rings are located under the circles of the celestial sphere of the same name at the moment of measurement. Therefore, when the apparent solar time is known, it turns into a solar compass. A corresponding sundial on the horizon to the self-orienting armillary sundial is the analemmatic sundial. The construction of a self-orienting armillary sundial was first described in the late 16th century by the English mathematician William Oughtred (1574-1660). In collaboration with the gnomonists from England and Austria, we determined where and when Professor Danić’s sundial was constructed: Vienna, second quarter of the 18th century. Originally, the sundial was adjusted for the latitude of Belgrade or Zemun (nowadays, a Belgrade municipality), which were under the Austrian rule for a long time during the 18th century. It is a beautiful, well-crafted, well-preserved, expensive sundial and astronomical instrument that should be kept in a museum, in the first place in the Museum of Astronomy of the Astronomical Observatory in Belgrade.

AB - In Serbia, as in many other European countries, there has been a widespread revival of interest in gnomonics in recent decades. An increasing number of sundials and a growing number of publications on gnomonics demonstrate the popularity of sundialling. Accordingly, it is interesting to find out which gnomonic terms are used, when they appeared and how they developed. In Serbia (and the countries formed after the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia), societies of gnomonics enthusiasts do not exist and therefore it is not reasonable to expect any concern intended to preserve gnomonic heritage or the existence of the gnomonic terminological system. This assumption has been confirmed by the analysis of publications in the field of gnomonics published in the Serbian language. Due to unfavorable historical circumstances in the Balkans, Serbian scientific terminology began to form rather late (19th century) and the first gnomonic terms appeared at the beginning of the 20th century. They were introduced in the articles of the Serbian astronomers, professors Milan Nedeljkovic (1902) and Vojislav V. Miskovic (1930/1932). However, most of these terms have not been preserved. Contemporary gnomonic terminology is multidisciplinary, and when the terms belonging to neighboring sciences are removed, a small number of gnomonic terms remains. Among them, the following four are the key ones: gnomon, gnomonic projection, sundial and gnomonics. In this paper, a modified definition of the most important term - gnomon has been proposed as well as the definitions of all other key gnomonic terms related to it.

AB - The Franciscan friary in Dubrovnik (Croatia) has two old wall sundials mounted in the small and large monastery cloisters. Both indicate equinoctial hours according to the apparent solar time. It is known for one who made it and the year it was made in - Pasko Baletin in 1770, and for the other, there are no data. The second sundial has two scales; on the upper scale, the direction of the shadow indicates hours counted from midnight (Ore francese), whereas on the lower scale, the hours counted from the previous sunset are indicated by the tip of the shadow i.e. its "sunlet" (Ore italiche) as it has been believed so far. In order to check this, we calculated both scales, made drafts and compared them with the existing sundial scales: hour lines on the upper scale coincide, while on the lower scale all calculated hour lines deviate from the existing lines towards the west. However, when the calculations for the lower scale are done in accordance to the hours counted from the end of the civil twilight (Ore italiche da campanile) there is complete compatibility. This was confirmed by on-site observation of the sundial. It remains to search through Dubrovnik archives to discover when the two-scale sundial was made. The last-mentioned variant could have been brought to Dubrovnik in the second half of the 18th century, and since then there was a need to construct a two-scale sundial.

Asterism and constellation: terminological dilemmas

AB - In contemporary astronomical literature, there is no uniform definition of the term asterism. This inconsistency is the consequence of differences between the traditional understanding of the term constellation, from the standpoint of the naked eye astronomy, and its contemporary understanding from the standpoint of the International Astronomical Union. A traditional constellation is a recognizable star configuration with a well-established name, whereas the International Astronomical Union defines a constellation as an exactly defined sector of the cosmic space that belongs to a particular traditional constellation. Asterism is a lower rank term in comparison to constellation, and as such it may not denote a whole traditional constellation, as these terms would become synonymous and parts of constellations would become "asterisms of asterisms". Similarly, asterism cannot define a macro configuration composed of the brightest stars in more constellations, thus, the Summer Triangle and other sky polygons are not asterisms. Therefore, asterisms are neither constellations nor sky polygons, but the third - easily recognizable parts of traditional constellations with historically well-established names, including separate groups of smaller stars that belong to star clusters (autonomous asterisms). Forms and names of asterisms may or may not be consistent with the parent constellation, and accordingly asterisms can be divided into compatible and incompatible. If asterisms have outlived the exact division of the celestial sphere and remained irreplaceable celestial landmarks in the naked eye astronomy, then it is high time for the International Astronomical Union to agree on the definition of asterism and to compile their official list.

AB - The paper presents the analysis of the orientation of 60 mosques built in the XV and XVI centuries in the Balkans' region of former Yugoslavia. The mosques have been selected according to their architectural value - mostly the dome mosques that were built by the most renowned builders. Based on the geographic coordinates, the qiblas of all mosques were calculated and the azimuths of their axes measured on orthophotographs. Statistical analysis has shown that the axes of these mosques vary in the horizon sector that is five times wider than the calculated sector of the correct qibla, with a systematic deviation of -10 degrees 15' in relation to the correct qibla. Connections between deviations of the architectural design (dome mosques and other mosques), location and elevation have not been identified. However, a connection between deviations and the time of construction has been identified: deviations from the qibla are smaller in mosques built at a later date. The paper has laid the groundwork for future analysis of the causes of the aforementioned deviations: in the XV and XVI centuries there were no accurate geographic coordinates of locations and the builders were not able to calculate (take over, measure) the exact qibla direction, regardless of the method they applied.

abstract = "The paper presents the analysis of the orientation of 60 mosques built in the XV and XVI centuries in the Balkans' region of former Yugoslavia. The paper has laid the groundwork for future analysis of the causes of the aforementioned deviations: in the XV and XVI centuries there were no accurate geographic coordinates of locations and the builders were not able to calculate (take over, measure) the exact qibla direction, regardless of the method they applied.",

AB - Astrotourism is a specific, new and perspective form of tourism which stands out from the mass tourist movement with special program that includes visits to astronomical observatories, with required astronomical observations. This form of tourism is considered to be "niche tourism" or special form of tourism which is intended for individuals or small groups, creating a diversity of offers in destinations. Astrotourism is now a modest, but not negligible part of the tourist destinations that wish to enrich its tourist offer. Like other small countries, Serbia has no spectacular planetarium, giant observatories and telescopes, but there are sufficient resources, with an interesting history, on the basis of which it can be offered to astrotourists original programs whose carrier should be Astronomical Society "Rudjer Boskovic" in collaboration with the Astronomical Observatory in Belgrade.

AB - Mount Athos uses Byzantine time system, where hours are counted from sunset. Setting the clock to Eastern European Time is done with tables printed in the church calendar every year. Having determined that these tables correspond to Athens, this paper calculates tables for Hilandar Monastery, which is very important for the history of timekeeping of the Serbs. Mount Athos monasteries are concentrated in a small area, differences in local times are negligible, and so they can all use the Hilandar table.

AB - Ovčar-Kablar gorge is after Fruška Gora Mountain the area with the largest number of old Serbian monasteries. This paper analyzes church orientation of all nine monasteries of the gorge from mathematical-geographical point of view, focusing on the churches of six monasteries that originate from the so called extended Middle Ages. Of these six churches only the axis of the Church of the Holy Trinity is directed exactly to the equinoctial east. Considering the means and methods that the chief architect could use, the orientation of monastery church of Vavedenje ('Presentation of Mary') with the aberration of only 4° can be also regarded as accurate. Moreover, this aberration could be the consequence of a mistake made by the chief architect about the date of equinox, which is also the case with the aberration of the monastery church of Sretenje ('Presentation of Our Lord'). The axis of the monastery church of Blagoveštenje ('Annunciation') is approximately directed to the point of the sunrise of summer solstice. Only the axis of the monastery church of Nikolje ('St Nicholas'), the oldest in the group of six of conditionally medieval churches, is out of the eastern sector of the horizon i.e. only this axis is not oriented in accordance with the ideal-type church rule.

Direction of ancient orthodox churches in the Republic of Serbia north from the Sava and the Danube

AB - This article presents the results of a mathematical-geographical analysis of the direction of ancient Orthodox churches in the Republic of Serbia north from the Sava and the Danube. These are medieval churches, or churches erected on the foundations of medieval churches, most of which katholikons, concentrated on the slopes of Fruška gora ('the Serbian Athos'). The main axes of all analysed churches (a total of 23) are located in the east sector of the horizon, i.e. they were all built according to the rule dictating that a church axis should be directed towards 'the rising sun'. The axes of four churches could not be directed towards the rising sun (towards the rising sun on the physical horizon). The axes of three churches are directed towards the equinox East, while the axes of the others, with one exception only, deviate towards NE (among which two with solstice direction). Based on the observed general deviation towards NE, it can be assumed that the church axes were directed, on their founding, towards the rising sun in spring, mostly around Annunciation.

Based on the observed general deviation towards NE, it can be assumed that the church axes were directed, on their founding, towards the rising sun in spring, mostly around Annunciation., U članku su izloženi rezultati matematičko-geografske analize orijentacije starih pravoslavnih crkava u Republici Srbiji severno od Save i Dunava.

AB - St Nicholas’ Church of the Serbian monastery Studenica was erected in 13th century, before 1230. This is a modest one-nave building with an entrance on the west and the apse on the east side. In order to explain a large deviation of the longitudinal axis of the church from the southeast direction, the following has been done: 1) deviation of the longitudinal axis of the church from the east direction (24o to the NE) was accurately measured; 2) a corresponding sector of true horizon of the church was constructed in the orthographic transverse map projection; 3) the position of the point where ends the line of observation in the vertical axis of the church and the position of the point of actual Sunrise of Summer Solstice were determined topographically on the true horizon. Since the distance between these points is about 1.5o, it can be said that the protomaster probably founded the Church St Nicholas on the basis of Summer Solstice. A direct check made on 21st of June, 2011 confirmed the accuracy of the applied method.

AB - The article presents the results of research on the direction of seventeen of the most notable churches of the Raška School on the territory of the Republic of Serbia, five of which are on UNESCO's World Heritage List. The azimuths of the main axis of each of these churches was measured and the dates were established when the sun rose in that direction on the physical horizon. With a single exception (the catholicon of Žiča Monastery), the main axes of all the churches lie in the eastern sector of the horizon. In nine churches the deviation of equinox East is ±60, while two of the churches (St. Achilles and the catholicon at Sopoćani Monastery), from a mathematical-geographical viewpoint, are ideally directed. No correlation was found between the direction of the churches and the points of sunrise on the days dedicated to the churches' patron saints.

Orientation of medieval churches of Morava school

AB - In this paper we present the mathematical and topographic analysis of orientation of the most significant churches (11) of Morava school, the last style in architecture of medieval Serbia whose executors were chief architects. The deviation from equinox East of the main axis of each church and the dates when the Sun rises on the physical horizon, in the extension of the main axis, have been calculated. These were the dates when the church could have been oriented towards the rising Sun. This possibility has been ruled out for four churches. As for the other churches, the matching of the mentioned dates with the patron's days wasn't established. The churches in monasteries Ljubostinja and Kalenic are oriented with astronomical precision towards equinox East, an admirable fact considering the tools available to the builders. Rade Borovic, the only chief architect who put his signature on his work, was the chief architect of Ljubostinja.

Mathematical-geographical intention in orienting mediaeval churches of the Serbian monastery Gradac

AB - The subject of the paper is an exact analysis of the orientation of the Serbian monastery churches: the Church of the Virgin Mary (13th century), St. Nicholas' Church (13th century), and an early Christian church (6th century). The paper determines the azimuth of parallel axes in churches, and then the aberrations of those axes from the equinoctial east are interpreted. Under assumption that the axes were directed towards the rising sun, it was surmised that the early Christian church's patron saint could be St. John the Baptist, that the Church of the Virgin Mary was founded on Annunciation day to which it is dedicated, and that St. Nicholas' Church is oriented in accordance with the rule ('toward the sunrise') even though its axis deviates from the equinoctial east by 41° degrees.
AB - Tema rada jeste egzaktna analiza orijentacije crkava srpskog manastira Gradac: Bogorodičine crkve (13. vek), crkve sv. Nikole (13. vek) i ranohrišćanske crkve (6. vek).

AB - Considering the fact that ecclesiastical rules do not precisely say that a church must be directed 'to the East' or 'to sunrise', it should always be checked if there is a connection between the orientation of a church and geometry of the Sun. In this paper, such examination is performed on the example of the church of St. John (the 13th century), one of four churches of the Studenica monastery, in the following way: 1) using gnomon method, the azimuth of the main longitudinal axis of the church is measured; 2) the altitude above the horizon of the point in which the extended axis of the church touches the true horizon is determined by cartometry; 3) the most probable dates when the Sun rises at that point are determined: May 7th according to Gregorian calendar, or April 30th according to Julian calendar, in the 13th century. The applied method is described in details and it can be applied for the analysis of the orientation of any other medieval church. This method can determine the time when the church was founded, as well as the fact if the church is original, or possibly erected on the foundations of some older sacral object.

This method can determine the time when the church was founded, as well as the fact if the church is original, or possibly erected on the foundations of some older sacral object.",

AB - The paper analyses a 1993 photograph of marble slab taken in front of the entrance to the harbour of the mediaeval fortification Hrusia which dates from 1302, the property of the Serbian monastery Chilandar on Mt. Athos. The slab is now dug under a pile of broken rocks from parts of a demolished wall, and it is inaccessible to direct verification of the assumption that it is 'a kind of sundial'. Based on the analysis it is highly likely that it is an old Greek sundial, which is today in its secondary position. The finding is of importance as it is the first old Greek or Byzantine sundial discovered on the Holy Mountain.

A mathematical and geographical analysis of the orientation of two early Christian churches in Serbia

AB - Among many medieval sacral edifices there are numerous churches built in old cult sites. In such cases where the medieval churches were preceded by the early Christian churches it is interesting to observe the differences or similarities in their orientation. In order to approach this systematically, it is necessary to start with the analyses of the longitudinal axes of certain Christian basilicas. For this occasion, we have chosen two churches, one in the valley of the river Gradac near Valjevo (6th century) and the other just under the peak, of Kopaonik, in Nebeske Stolice (5th/6th century) on the Kopaonik. Thus, the subject of this paper is the exact analysis of the orientation of the cited edifices. The church located in the valley of the river Gradac has been pretty accurately oriented in the west-eastern direction, with the altar naturally facing the east. Since it is positioned atop a rocky cliff, with the eastern and western part of the horizon completely hidden, it is clear that the builder was unable to follow the sunrise or the sunset, during the laying of the foundation, the builder couldn't be guided by the sunrise or the sunset, but he had to be familiar with the exact methods of orientation. The longitudinal axis of the basilica in Nebeske Stolice, on Kopaonik, is positioned fairly accurately and faces sunset during the summer solstice. As the basilica is positioned on a plateau with an altitude of nearly 1793m, the eastern part of the horizon is completely exposed. This allowed the builder to lay the foundation of the church visually during the dawn of the summer solstice Other than this possibility, the builder had another, in case he didn't want or couldn't wait for that exact day, and that would be the possibility of determining the direction via the geometric method, using analemma.

AB - Mathematical-geographical position of a territory is given by determining the field of geographical coordinate net in which it fits without remnants. Percentage ratio of a territory surface and surface of correspondent field of geographical net can be named field fill. Mathematical-geographical position of the given territory is completely determined connecting corresponding day geometry (duration of the daytime, twilight, daylight and night) to its field of geographical net.

Crtani humor u nastavi geografije
