AB - Water scarcity, unequal access to water resources, and the impact of climate change on water availability are among the major global environmental concerns. As dynamic and vulnerable water subjects, rivers are constantly exposed to the pressure of natural conditions variability (primarily climatic) and direct anthropogenic influences. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate river regime dynamics over longer periods to adapt the water management sector, and human demands to any observed variations in river discharge. Observing the periodicity or cyclicity of the occurrence of certain discharge values is an important topic of modern physical geography and hydrology research. Statistics and hydrologic modelling provide great opportunities for observing cyclicality and forecasting future trends. The aim of this paper is to indicate the importance of specific statistical methods of autocorrelation and spectral analysis to study the repeatability of mean annual and maximum discharges. The South Morava River in Serbia (HS: Mojsinje, Korvingrad, Grdelica) has been selected as a case study. The obtained results (period: 1924-2021) indicated the significant cyclicity of mean annual discharges, especially pronounced at the upstream hydrological station Grdelica (3.5-year cycle) and downstream hydrological station Mojsinje (19.5-year cycle). These cyclicities are mostly influenced by variations in the amount of precipitation received from the upper part of the river basin (R > 0.6). In contrast, no regular cycles of maximum annual discharge values were determined in the studied period. The obtained results can be important for future detailed geographic and hydrologic studies as well as for the development of strategies and plans in the field of water management, environmental protection, spatial planning, prevention of floods and droughts, etc.

AB - Study of riverbank erosion and lateral channel migration processes is important topic in modern physical-geographical research. The most important aspects of the riverbank erosion research include the analysis of the process intensity, as well as the determination of its main causes and consequences. The subject of the doctoral dissertation includes comprehensive analysis of riverbank erosion and lateral channel migration of the South Morava River on four representative sectors in the period 1924-2020. The selected sectors (I-IV) are located in the lower and middle part of the South Morava River, which are characterized by the occurrence of lateral migration and the meander development, as well as the existence of different fluvial forms (eroded river banks, river bars, cut- off meanders). The quantification of the riverbank erosion intensity at the interannual level is based on the usage of numerous data sources, including topographic and cadastral maps and orthophotos from different time sections. An important segment of the research is the analysis of the recent morphological development, through the determination of intra-annual and seasonal variations of the riverbank erosion intensity. The analysis is based on field research measurements and application of remote sensing (drone surveys, georeferencing, image processing and orthophotos creation) in the period between November 2019 and November 2021. The results indicated the variations in the intensity of riverbank erosion in all investigated sectors depending on the period. The maximum intensity values are registered during the period 1961-1969, while significant values are also recorded in the recent period. In accordance, the results of intra- annual dynamics show significant values of the process intensity, in the research period of two years. Among the main factors that have an impact on the process intensity, hydrological ones are singled out as most important, which is indicated by the statistical dependence of various hydrological parameters (river discharge) in relation to the intensity of the riverbank erosion and lateral channel migration. In addition, the importance of vegetation and its basic characteristics in stabilization process of the riverbank zone is highlighted. The further research indicated that the consequences of riverbank erosion are manifested through the degradation and permanent loss of land resources, primarily the category of agricultural land. In this regard, significant economic losses due to reduction of agricultural production are estimated. The obtained results and its interpretation represent a fundamental base for future scientific research, but also starting point for plans and strategies development related to the water and land management, inventory of eroded banks, etc. Therefore, the importance of this research is reflected in its scientific and applied value.

AB - Riverbank erosion and lateral channel migration are important geomorphological processes which cause various landscape, socio-economic, and environmental consequences. Although those processes are present on the territory of Serbia, there is no available data about the soil loss caused by riverbank erosion for the entire country. In this study, the spatial and temporal dynamics of the riverbank erosion for the largest internal rivers in Serbia (Velika Morava, Zapadna Morava, Južna Morava, Pek, Mlava, Veliki Timok, Kolubara) was assessed using remote sensing and GIS. The aim of this paper is to determine the total and average soil loss over large-scale periods (1923-2020), comparing data from the available sources (aerial photographs, satellite images, and different scale paper maps). Results indicated that lateral migration caused significant problems through land loss (approximately 2,561 ha), especially arable land, and land use changes in river basins, but also economic loss due to the reduction of agricultural production. Total and average soil loss was calculated for five most representative meanders on all studied rivers, and on the basis of the obtained values, certain regularities about further development and dynamics of riverbank movement are presented. A better understanding of river channel migration in this area will be of a great importance for practical issues such as predicting channel migration rates for river engineering and planning purposes, soil and water management and land use changes, environment protection.

AB - The morphological evolution of the fluvial relief in the lowland areas is determined by the dynamic of the lateral channel migration process. River meandering and lateral channel migration represent continuous, dynamic and complex processes, which intensity modifies alluvial plains. Accordingly, it is a current topic observed from the domain of various scientific disciplines and practices, including the geographical aspect of the study. Directly or indirectly, variations of natural and anthropogenic processes affect changes in the lateral migration intensity, which is later manifested through permanent consequences for the environment. The aim of this paper is to investigate the process of lateral channel migration, through the review and interpretation of theoretical and methodological concepts and results of contemporary scientific literature. In this paper, on specific sections of the South Morava River (Serbia), the values of maximum lateral migration over different time periods are determined. Three representative river sectors were singled out, spatial and temporal dynamic was determined, while the process of lateral channel migration was presented quantitatively and graphically. Based on the obtained data, a comparative analysis showed significant riverbank changes for the observed meanders, within the period 1924-2020. Special emphasis is on the analysis of the lateral channel migration in the last decade of the mentioned period. The obtained results can be further used in order to develop and implement plans of water and land management, environmental protection and socio-economic development strategies.

The obtained results can be further used in order to develop and implement plans of water and land management, environmental protection and socio-economic development strategies.,

AB - Understanding the current status of wateriness, which include studying the variability of different hydrological parameters over a long period of time, represents a significant process for determining the availability and quantity of water resources, especially at the local and regional level. First, it is necessary to identify certain paternity and frequency in a long time series of hydrological parameters. Secondly, it is important to correlate them with variability of some climatological elements on the one hand and anthropogenic influence in other hand, which are the main factors that have influence on the changes in river wateriness. The main objective of this paper is the analysis of seasonal and annual variations of river discharges in the South Morava river basin, for the period of 50 years (1968-2017), and the observation of certain trends (using non-parametric Mann-Kendall test and homogeneity test). Explanation and understanding the potential causes of observed changes, which are significant, is one of the tasks of this research. In this paper are observed data of the mean annual and monthly river discharges from 20 active hydrological stations in the South Morava river basin, for which there are empirical data for the taken period. The results indicate that most rivers in the basin have dominant decreasing trend of the mean annual river discharges (85% of them), but the more significant changes are noticed for the values of the seasonal river discharges.

AB - The fluvial process is characterized by an intense meandering riverbed. The aim of this study was to perform a reconstruction of the lateral migration of a 15 km length of an active meandering river during the period 1930-2016. River morphological changes were analyzed and quantified from cadastral maps and aerial photographs as well as by geodetic survey and GIS. Hydrological characteristics and extreme hydrological events were evaluated in relation to bank erosion rate. The rate of bank erosion was markedly different from the long-term studied meanders, just like in the short-term period. During the 87 years of observation (from 1930 to 2016), the length of the Kolubara River was enlarged by 3.44 km. The average migration rate of the Kolubara River for monitored meanders in the period 1930-2010 was 1.9 myear(-1), while in the period 2010-2016, the average migration rate was 3.3 myear(-1). The rate of bank erosion was more intensive across the entire short-term period than during the longer period, and the maximum annual rate of bank erosion during the period 2010-2016 varied between 0.3 and 11.5 m. It is very likely that in the period from 2010, frequent discharge variations and rapid change of its extreme values caused more intensive bank erosion. These research results will be valuable for river channel management, engineering (soft and hard engineering), and planning purposes (predicting changes in river channel form) in the Kolubara River Basin.
